It's on BU for putting him in that spot.

I don't get this criticism. Monte has been great in pretty much everything he's done so far this year - I don't think Underwood thought twice about "putting him in that spot" and I'd frankly raise an eyebrow if he did. And as noted, he made the heads up play in a less than ideal circumstance.

TJL had a chance to seal it with FTs at NW game and this game. Sigh...
Why lob a ball when the lane was wide open? Sigh...
What's going on with M.Smith? He seems disinterested..

?

My assessment is a lot of what has been said is true but to me the main problem is the weakness of out interior defense and the fact that Finke has pretty much disappeared from the arc the last few games! If he makes a few of those attempts the game looks a whole lot different!

Most coaches put in an experienced big in for late contested in bounds plays.

I think the one thing I will take away from this game is that Underwood is the right guy.

May take some time and a couple more players, but I think he's the right guy. Never thought that about the last one.

Some positives from the stats: us TOs: 16, them TOs: 25; us STLs: 16, them STLs: 6; us bench scoring: 45, them bench scoring: 22; 5 Illini players with double-digit scoring (LB, MA, AJ, TF, KN). Struck out in most other stat categories, but primary negative: we lost.

This team is learning more each and every game they play, great upside, keep it up.

That they do but BU has said that Monte is by far the guy who just absorbs situations and understands them. He is a sponge when it comes to the basketball situations and he made the best decision with what he had to offer. Not much movement towards the ball and didn't take the 5 second or force it on their side. He tossed it up and all that was needed was a touch by either one of the two and game is over.

I like Tejon. I just think Frazier is a better talent. And because Tejon is careless, he doesn't get the "start him over the freshman because freshman make dumb mistakes" treatment.

I hope Tejon is an amazing backup point guard on a Big Ten champion team in the next two years

Tejon is an amazing defender. Honestly, most games (except tonight) I feel our offense runs better when Tejon runs the team. Time will tell I guess.

The start of this game begs to differ.

Again, if you start and play 10 minutes vs come off the bench and play 30 minutes....it simply doesn't matter. I look at Smith and he looks like a guy who is overwhelmed right now. It would probably benefit him a lot to see the game unfold for a few minutes, then check in.

It's kind of like the guy who wants to hit leadoff. Well, great....but after the 1st inning, who the hell cares who led the game off? Same applies to basketball. Ok, so you start....great. if you're getting subbed out for at the 18 minute mark of the first half, does it matter?

Once 19:59 hits after the jump ball, the allure of starting is over and it's a game of adjustments from there.

Alstork definitely fouled him on the last play. That was a nasty cross - Cowan was phenomenal and it's a shame that the game ended that way because otherwise the story is Alstork bottling him up in the second half and making the comeback possible.

Here are the two main things:
- What in the name of all that is holy is happening with goaltending/basket interference? How is this not reviewable and further, how are these calls getting continually flipped on the floor? This is like when the NFL suddenly doesn't know what a catch is.
- I am trying to think of any possible rationale for the Tejon lob attempt other than he didn't know the time/score of the game. I've got nothing.

Eh, There was still like 40 sec left and we were only up 1. I think you take the points if you can get them. He got excited and over threw it.

Some takeaways ...love the testicular fortitude on this team coming back like that. That being said we should at least be 8-1....we were better than nw and gave the game away tonight too. The goaltending not called ...was another screw job by refs...the last foul I felt should not be called he had all ball and their guy was out of control....those 2 plays being what they were are own youth and stupidity still cost us game ...don’t know what tjl was thinking on that steal / lob wrong time for it and that inbounds pass are you serious waste a timeout and that’s what we draw up? I still like where this team is headed and we will be a tough matchup by big ten tourney I think we can make a deep run.

Before we nominate Evans for the Hall of fame, he was third team all American and drafted in the second round.

This Illini team will be as good or better than the Cowboys were last season.

Ok....lol

He was ONLY a third team All American and was ONLY drafted in the second round huh?

And who on this team is going to be a third team All American and an NBA draftee this year?

I'll wait for that answer.

I'd say probably that if Kip realizes that lob isn't for him and Alstork dunks it the roof comes off the SFC and it's a SC Top 10 play on Sportscenter tonight.

The Unfortunate thing is if he just makes a more selfish play and tries to finish himself, if he misses either Alstork or Nichols have an easy follow

I'm less disappointed than I thought I would be. Impressed with Frazier and Williams and Really impressed with Jordan...still think we can make a run at the tourney.

One more gripe: we have to be leading the NCAA in travels when catching a pass and then breaking to the rim while forgetting to start dribbling first. Kipper is the king of this

Yep, another reason I am not worried about these early losses. This team is making so many silly mistakes because they are playing too fast. They will get used to the speed eventually. The mentality is there right now, the execution will come. Just a matter of when.

I understand the point, but IMHO setting the tone absolutely matters. If the 5 you have aren't setting the right tone, you change it. The same applies to the lead off hitter in baseball. He is the tone setter, table setter, spark plug....whatever term you like. I get that you can substitute, and total minutes played is ultimately a bigger deal, but to think that setting the tone from the tip off doesn't matter is weird to me, and tonight's game is a great example.

Trent isn't exactly helping us there either. He's 4/29......

and your point is??? This team, tonight, looked better with TF. Last game, TJL looked better. I don't need either of them shooting a bunch of 3s. I need them to run the team to the point that the team scores and is in position to win at the end of the game. I want a coaching staff that is willing to sit players and play players based on the now, not on the past. Earn each minute, appreciate each minute, and we will have a TEAM that is tough to beat.

Frazier needs to start

Lineup of Frazier, Mark Smith, Alstork, Black, and Finke
who cares who starts....BU and AJ don't, to name a couple. In the first half I thought the entire 2d team was our "A" team...it just doesnt matter in this system to anyone but maybe parents and girlfriends.

The first several minutes of a scoreless game, in which Maryland went 8-0, would like to talk to you. Maybe you can invite Frazier's girlfriend and parents

Agreed. This isn't a good loss, but how many years back do you have to go to find a team with this much resilience to not go into a shell and lose by 25+ &/or cry on the sidelines during/after the game? I like what I see from OUR team right now. :chief:
no loss is good, but we got a glimpse of the potential....2d half play was really something to be optimistic about. After reading the game thread at half time I thought we were going to have to talk half of Illini Nation of a ledge.

Do refs not get how this works? It is not WHEN the foul happened...it is WHEN it is called...it was called with no time left...it isn't when it happens it is when the ref gets his hand up...good lord.

For the 100th time...when a dude travels and the ref waits 1 second then calls it...they don't reset the clock...just like when a guy "blocks" a shot and the ref calls it...if it is at 0.00 the game is over or goes to OT...that is it...period. I have coached (football) for 16 years now...that is how it works.

Yes...it has been for years. That is why the refs have timers in their belt.

You know you can look at the rules:
Art. 3. Each period shall end when time expires except that:
a. When the ball is in flight during a try, the period shall end when the try
ends.
b. When a held ball or violation occurs so near the expiration of time that
the game clock is not stopped before time expires, the period shall end
with the held ball or violation. (Exception: Rule 11-3.1.a.2)
c. When a foul occurs so near the expiration of time that the official
timer cannot stop the game clock before time expires or when the foul
occurs after time expires but while the ball is in flight during a try, the
period shall end when the free throw(s) and all related activity have been
completed. (Exception: Rule 11-3.1.a.3)

Part C is pretty damn clear that you don't know what you are talking about.

I love BU's post game press conferences...lol

Man, gets ME fired up! Guy comes out with band-aides because he murdered a garbage can.

They came out in the second half with their hair on fire. BU will not let this group fail.
