Anyone who watches college sports for more than five minutes quickly realizes that there is a favored class of program for which tables are tilted towards in various ways. It happens in roundball, and in the gridiron game. We all know who the Favored Programs are in both sports.
And why is that? Because certain names draw viewers to the television. And viewers means revenue and higher ad-selling rates. It’s a circle-jerk that has fed on itself over the years. Make that decades. Or, forever.
Has anyone noticed that Fox has carried almost the entire schedules of Michigan and ‘the (Oh-Whatevers)’ all season long? Sure, not too many people really want to look at Rutgers or Indiana. BUT this is how the cycle feeds on itself. Young guys coming up see who the Programs of Privilege are... and the guys want in on that exposure and notoriety.
Will this change? No. SO what is the answer?
Crash the glass ceiling, like Illinois basketball has done and Illini football is trying to do now. Become one of the ‘Uppers’ yourself. Because no one is going to help you or do this for you.
The Illini have endured unfair calls and treatment over the years because of the established landscape. But all that is going to change now that the Illini are staking a claim to being a program of significance that the Nation and the Major Corporate Media needs to pay attention to.
At first, no one likes a party-crasher. But after a while and you don’t go away... they have to tolerate that you are there. And then after that, they just accept you as ‘one of the boys’.
