If we did that to Fears, 100/100 times we're getting a foul call. Just the facts.Officiating is hard. But that was blatant.
Officiating is always hard, but sometimes it's biased. Both can be true.

In real life when a criminal gets away with transgressions with just a slap on the wrist they continue to do bad things and more times than not escalate the level of wrongdoing. The refs should be ashamed and reprimanded for letting fears getaway with it again and Izzo is a total hypocrite. Did you all see the way he was crying and screaming at the refs when they informed him they were taking a look at it when Brad demanded they look at it? Fears lsgoing to continue to do his antics until the league suspends him for a game or two.I know this is farfetched, but, what would have been the result of Mirk, after being purposely tripped, getting to his feet and getting into a fist fight with Fears. Is it possible that both players get ejected. Such a result would surely have benefitted us. I mean, not dealing with Fears' numerous instances of dirty play prior to a fist fight on national television would make the powers that be look pretty bad. Hell, the kid we had a few years ago who stepped on the Purdue player got a two game suspension. I think that if Fears' dirty play continues that sooner or later he will be dealt with by a player.
You are saying the officiating is biased? C'mon. if that were the case - the media or other schools would be making the same accusations with different instances of bias.If we did that to Fears, 100/100 times we're getting a foul call. Just the facts.

Exactly - can you imagine Tears not getting that call? The fact that they were calling any contact on drives by MSU late in the game, but completely swallowed the whistle on this one is crazy. What else were they looking at? Carr is not vertical - he jumped into Keaton and knocked him off his path to the basket and his armed is being yanked by the other MSU defender. TerribleIf we did that to Fears, 100/100 times we're getting a foul call. Just the facts.

Refs love Izzo. Not my pic, a friend sent it to me, but sure seems appropriate.Exactly - can you imagine Tears not getting that call? Mirk would have had to catch him first because that dirty little SOB would turn tail and hide behind JizzoI know this is farfetched, but, what would have been the result of Mirk, after being purposely tripped, getting to his feet and getting into a fist fight with Fears. Pretty clear that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
If the league cared, they would have done something after the Minnesota game.My hope is that while Brad didn’t publicly say that play was dirty, he does exactly what Izzo wanted May to do. Call him directly and say that was dirty and you know it, deal with it. Then send it to the league as well. Surely the league has seen this all and is tracking it, but put a little pressure on them.
The irony is that he was a sympathetic figure last year with getting shot in the leg and being out. I don't know the details on all that but it appears like wrong place...wrong time type of situation. But, I look at that separately from what's been going in these last few games with his conductIt’s the standard nowadays unfortunately. Everyone gets a trophy and hero status for simply not kicking someone in the nuts one game.
It's obviously a photoshop job or some other kind of edit, my apologies to the ref and Izzo. But it does indicate what is thought of the calls that MSU gets, especially at home, and seemingly doubly so when we play them.Refs love Izzo. Not my pic, a friend sent it to me, but sure seems appropriate.View attachment 47359
So many examples in this game where proper action or non action by a the refs works sealed it.Awful, awful, awful. Difference in being a 3pt lead with 2 minutes to go versus a 1pt deficit with 1:50 to go.
It isn't just Illini fans who are calling out the refs. On Wagler, if you go back and watch his drives, MSU was slapping his arms multiple times on most drives. Over 50 years following the Illini, I have seen some truly bad officiating, but none were worse than this game.

The Numbers Reveal How Officiating Shaped Illinois' Loss at Michigan State
The Illini didn't lose Saturday because of the referees, but they were certainly a thorn in their side. Here are the numbers behind it.www.si.com

I have watched it from a few angles...it just was not blatant enough. If it was Braden Smith, we think nothing of it. Fears? yeah we go with intetional based on the past couple games. I do think he knew what he was doing tho. However he does plant his foot about where you would expect him to...looks like he was in a hurry to get that foot down. I give the bad refs a pass on it...borderline call.I just watched the replay again. Fears definitely intentionally stuck out his leg to trip Mirk. I hope he gets his because slimebag Izzo isn't going to do anything about it. Shades of DUKE!
Or rebound the ball, up 1, with 11 seconds to go.I have watched it from a few angles...it just was not blatant enough. If it was Braden Smith, we think nothing of it. Worse were the ghost fouls on Tomi and Andre....add the grab and spin on Mirk....plus Wags getting no call on body contact that sent him to the floor. We can go on and on! Travel on the rebound by Kohler before the go ahead 3. I guess he gets two pivot feet!
Sucks when the refs change the outcome of the game....if we shoot a little better and hit the "gold" shots we had, we can ignore bad calls! Lets go kick some cheese heads as*es!
Don't get me wrong.... we did not play well! I saw those things too! It is our fault we are in a position that the calls are being talked about! Do a few things better and we take that game! It is on us!Or rebound the ball, up 1, with 11 seconds to go.
Or not get out rebounded by 10
Or not get outscored 22-0 in transition points
Or not shoot 10 of 36 from three
Or Wagler not going 2-16
Or not have two lane violations.
A lot could have changed the outcome of the game. Always better to look in the mirror before blaming others. Did the refs have something to do with it? Sure. Did we have more than enough ample opportunities to make it meaningless? Absolutely.
Let's move on to Wiscy.

Believe me, I'm in the same boat you are. A lot to Indiana or Wisconsin at home would be infinitely worse than a road loss to MSU. These are both must have games.Don't get me wrong.... we did not play well! I saw those things too! It is our fault we are in a position that the calls are being talked about! Do a few things better and we take that game! It is on us!
I have moved on btw! Ready for tomorrow!![]()
It was 100% intentional, and should have been a flagrant foul. A player's history should matter in my opinion as well.I have watched it from a few angles...it just was not blatant enough. My thoughts exactly we really missed Boswell this game a lot!!!!A few random thoughts:
--Fears is really good...and really dirty. Both can be true. The trip on Mirk was not only intentional, it is one of his go-to moves. Until the B1G steps in, it will continue.
--When the Patriots upset the Rams in 2002, the way they stopped the Rams' offense was to grab Faulk every time he tried to go out of the backfield to run a pass route. The officials called it a couple times, but swallowed their flags another 20 or so times. The Patriots knew that the officials would not turn the Super Bowl into a flag fest. What MSU did on defense last night followed the same strategy on a basketball court. Wagler got hit on virtually every drive. They called a few, but looked the other way on many more. Fears got a much more favorable whistle against a team that is coached not to foul. The fact that the number of fouls called was pretty even is really misleading when one compares the level of contact.
--This the game where Boswell was missed the most. He will elevate this team when he returns and gets the rust off.
--Disappointed that a big opportunity playing with house money got away in the final minute...but this game may have prepared the Illini for a deep tourney run more than any other game. Wagler was off his normal game. Shots didn't fall. Very physical game. The refs played an outsized role in the outcome. Hostile crowd. Against a team that, while not as talented as the Illini, physically matched up with them about as well as any team. Yet they hung in until the end.
