I know this is farfetched, but, what would have been the result of Mirk, after being purposely tripped, getting to his feet and getting into a fist fight with Fears. Is it possible that both players get ejected. Such a result would surely have benefitted us. I mean, not dealing with Fears' numerous instances of dirty play prior to a fist fight on national television would make the powers that be look pretty bad. Hell, the kid we had a few years ago who stepped on the Purdue player got a two game suspension. I think that if Fears' dirty play continues that sooner or later he will be dealt with by a player.
In real life when a criminal gets away with transgressions with just a slap on the wrist they continue to do bad things and more times than not escalate the level of wrongdoing. The refs should be ashamed and reprimanded for letting fears getaway with it again and Izzo is a total hypocrite. Did you all see the way he was crying and screaming at the refs when they informed him they were taking a look at it when Brad demanded they look at it? Fears lsgoing to continue to do his antics until the league suspends him for a game or two.

If we did that to Fears, 100/100 times we're getting a foul call. Just the facts.

Officiating is always hard, but sometimes it's biased. Both can be true.
You are saying the officiating is biased? C'mon. if that were the case - the media or other schools would be making the same accusations with different instances of bias.

FWIW, Monday morning thoughts after a ~1,200-mile round trip drive to East Lansing, including ~ 30 minutes of near-whiteout (not of the James Franklin-energy variety) conditions in NW Pennsylvania Friday evening just to make the drive interesting:

(1) We were at the Illini bench end of the court just above the Izzone in the corner and so in the 2H couldn't really see the atrocious calls down the stretch and in OT at the MSU end. Completely unsurprised at how we got jobbed there. Koehler's walk on that final rebound in regulation before he tossed it to Teng at the arc was obvious even at our end but then again it would have been obvious to a satellite in low-earth orbit it was so blatant. That ridiculous officiating was priced in the moment I saw that High Knees was on the crew.

(2) What a pleasure to see our guys play in that environment. Despite the obscene disparity in officiating down the stretch we were clearly the better team and in fact the Spartans fans around us knew it and were somewhat sheepish about the win. The guys were completely poised to the end and kept working relentlessly. They exhibited March/April poise.

(3) I chucked this comment in at the end of the game thread: freaking Mirk. He drove straight toward us down the lane for lay-ins at least three times late. He's an absolute grown a$$ man. No one on MSU could stop him. I wish we had continued to punch it inside throughout the 2H the way we did when we came out of the locker room to begin the half. We would have continued to draw fouls because they couldn't contend inside.

(4) Disappointing loss but it was ours to win if we'd just rebounded a bit more and cut off Fears' lanes (passing and driving), despite the absolute hosing from the officials. Fears is an embarrassment to college basketball, of course, but he's a stellar creator with the ball and pleasure to watch in that respect. Carr is incapable of receiving a pass and not subsequently walking lol.

(5) Nothing but praise for Spartan fans. From the bar on campus where we pregamed through the two hours in Breslin everyone was cool and, in fact, deferential to the orange. Guys in front of us at halftime asked me about Ty and when he would be back. They love him, as a Saginaw guy, and were bummed we poached him. Among my bucket list items was to see an MSU-Illini game in Breslin while The Toad is still coaching, and none of it disappointed. It's a spectacular game atmosphere and a great arena. The fact that nearly everyone in green knew they snatched the game illegitimately from us was a consolation. On the drive yesterday (nothing but sunshine, thank goodness) I felt good about where the team is and where we're going. We have BAM last Saturday evening and we win easily.

(6) The Midwest: ❤️ as always. We overnighted outside Cleveland Friday night, hung out there until early afternoon Saturday, and then drove across northern Ohio, through Toledo and lower Michigan, to EL on a bluebird afternoon cold as all get out. Love (and miss) the landscape, people, their warmth, the farms, the heavy industry still there. MSU has a pretty little campus that I'd seen 30 years ago and forgotten. Wish we could have lingered there a bit longer. I can even pitch in praise for Ann Arbor, as we enjoyed a savory breakfast Sunday morning at a little cafe there along the Huron River. I was absolutely flattened when I got home last evening but would do it again in a minute.

Looking forward to regrouping, dispatching Wisconsin and Indiana and then heading west. It's gonna be a great month to come. Enjoy it, my brothers and sisters. :illinois::ah:

Exactly - can you imagine Tears not getting that call? The fact that they were calling any contact on drives by MSU late in the game, but completely swallowed the whistle on this one is crazy. What else were they looking at? Carr is not vertical - he jumped into Keaton and knocked him off his path to the basket and his armed is being yanked by the other MSU defender. Terrible

Refs love Izzo. Not my pic, a friend sent it to me, but sure seems appropriate.

Mirk would have had to catch him first because that dirty little SOB would turn tail and hide behind Jizzo

My hope is that while Brad didn’t publicly say that play was dirty, he does exactly what Izzo wanted May to do. Call him directly and say that was dirty and you know it, deal with it. Then send it to the league as well. Surely the league has seen this all and is tracking it, but put a little pressure on them.
If the league cared, they would have done something after the Minnesota game.

They didn’t, so they don’t.

It’s the standard nowadays unfortunately. Everyone gets a trophy and hero status for simply not kicking someone in the nuts one game.
The irony is that he was a sympathetic figure last year with getting shot in the leg and being out. I don't know the details on all that but it appears like wrong place...wrong time type of situation. But, I look at that separately from what's been going in these last few games with his conduct

Awful, awful, awful. Difference in being a 3pt lead with 2 minutes to go versus a 1pt deficit with 1:50 to go.
So many examples in this game where proper action or non action by a the refs works sealed it.

That no call one msu travel when he got the rebound and kicked it our with 9 seconds for them to hit the go ahead three was so egregious.

Shoulda been out ball up 1 with like 9 seconds left.

It isn't just Illini fans who are calling out the refs. On Wagler, if you go back and watch his drives, MSU was slapping his arms multiple times on most drives. Over 50 years following the Illini, I have seen some truly bad officiating, but none were worse than this game.

"drawing whistles is a skill"

No it ****ing isn't... drawing fouls is a skill... whether they're called or not is an entirely different matter

I just watched the replay again. Fears definitely intentionally stuck out his leg to trip Mirk. I hope he gets his because slimebag Izzo isn't going to do anything about it. Shades of DUKE!
I have watched it from a few angles...it just was not blatant enough. If it was Braden Smith, we think nothing of it. Fears? yeah we go with intetional based on the past couple games. I do think he knew what he was doing tho. However he does plant his foot about where you would expect him to...looks like he was in a hurry to get that foot down. I give the bad refs a pass on it...borderline call.

Worse were the ghost fouls on Tomi and Andre....add the grab and spin on Mirk....plus Wags getting no call on body contact that sent him to the floor. We can go on and on! Travel on the rebound by Kohler before the go ahead 3. I guess he gets two pivot feet!
Sucks when the refs change the outcome of the game....if we shoot a little better and hit the "gold" shots we had, we can ignore bad calls! Lets go kick some cheese heads as*es!

Or rebound the ball, up 1, with 11 seconds to go.

Or not get out rebounded by 10

Or not get outscored 22-0 in transition points

Or not shoot 10 of 36 from three

Or Wagler not going 2-16

Or not have two lane violations.

A lot could have changed the outcome of the game. Always better to look in the mirror before blaming others. Did the refs have something to do with it? Sure. Did we have more than enough ample opportunities to make it meaningless? Absolutely.

Let's move on to Wiscy.

Don't get me wrong.... we did not play well! I saw those things too! It is our fault we are in a position that the calls are being talked about! Do a few things better and we take that game! It is on us!
I have moved on btw! Ready for tomorrow!:hailtotheorange:

Believe me, I'm in the same boat you are. A lot to Indiana or Wisconsin at home would be infinitely worse than a road loss to MSU. These are both must have games.

It was 100% intentional, and should have been a flagrant foul. A player's history should matter in my opinion as well.

He has a tell when he does something like this. He doesn't react at all. The typical reaction if you just 'planted your' foot and another player trips on it and falls right in front of you would be to look at the player falling. Fears purposely ignores it as if he doesn't notice. He has the exact same reaction when he tugs Mirk's arm in overtime.

It is especially noticeable because of his exact opposite reaction when he is trying to draw a foul. He is barely tapped and goes flailing all of the floor.

A few random thoughts:
--Fears is really good...and really dirty. Both can be true. The trip on Mirk was not only intentional, it is one of his go-to moves. Until the B1G steps in, it will continue.
--When the Patriots upset the Rams in 2002, the way they stopped the Rams' offense was to grab Faulk every time he tried to go out of the backfield to run a pass route. The officials called it a couple times, but swallowed their flags another 20 or so times. The Patriots knew that the officials would not turn the Super Bowl into a flag fest. What MSU did on defense last night followed the same strategy on a basketball court. Wagler got hit on virtually every drive. They called a few, but looked the other way on many more. Fears got a much more favorable whistle against a team that is coached not to foul. The fact that the number of fouls called was pretty even is really misleading when one compares the level of contact.
--This the game where Boswell was missed the most. He will elevate this team when he returns and gets the rust off.
--Disappointed that a big opportunity playing with house money got away in the final minute...but this game may have prepared the Illini for a deep tourney run more than any other game. Wagler was off his normal game. Shots didn't fall. Very physical game. The refs played an outsized role in the outcome. Hostile crowd. Against a team that, while not as talented as the Illini, physically matched up with them about as well as any team. Yet they hung in until the end.
My thoughts exactly we really missed Boswell this game a lot!!!!
