My secretary and I were just discussing this concept when it comes to parenting. (She is expecting her 1st.) In general most parents tend t have a blind eye to the antics of their kids and don't think it possible for them to do wrong.

I think your generalization is wrong. While some parents think their kids can do no wrong, others know better.

Really? Hmm. Thanks.
I wonder if that is why is called a generalization (as I said).

Right, condescension will get you far.

If it's approx. split, it's a false generalization. And I don't think it's split. For parents w/only young ones, sure. But as junior gets older, parents wise up.

And who said I referred to only only kids? Since I specifically said my secretary is expecting I could have been talking about younger children.

In either case I was only agreeing with pizzaman that the whole society tends to give people closer to use a pass more readily than we do others.

I am with you. While they should be punished because that is the rule everyone is supposed to play under I have a really hard time getting worked up about this. We all know a big chunk of these guys are barely literate. To think that most schools are not greasing the grades for them is simply being a denialist or having your head in the sand.

I have said it before. If you are supremely gifted at something but essentially bad at something else, why waste time with the something else? If you are a virtuoso pianist, is it important that you take two years of foreign language? Does the world-class mathematician really need to be able to understand English and Shakespeare? Does a guy that is supremely gifted at bouncing a rubber ball really need to be able to read?

We all should strive to be more than we are but the advances in the world come from people that are supremely gifted at something. The well-rounded guy makes a great school teacher or dentist but is a lot less likely to cure HIV.

Let the ballplayers dispense with the charade of being students. Let them major in basketball if they want and let's stop trying to police nonsense.

If your gifted in one area it makes sense to maximize your talent, I agree. However, one cannot be ignorant in the rest of your life.

You might be a supremely gifted Oncologist. That might take you a long way in the world, but if you have poor math/financial skills or poor commmunication skills it would very much limit your potential for success.

A lottery pick NBA player is a prime prospect for being taken for every dime they make if they have no financial acumen. You see it happen all the time in pro sports.

A solid background in multiple areas assists in long term success IMO.

How many out there think BB players at UConn, Syracuse, Lville, KY, and Kansas are involved in serious acedemic endeavors?

How many FB players at LSU, Clemson, FSU, Auburn and Ohio St?

The UNC thing is likely going on at multiple places in some form or another. Shameful.

I am self reporting a violation. Anyone that posts an opinion on academic issues should be able to spell academic. I will penalize myself 2 posts per day until yesterday. I consulted with Roy Williams prior to deciding on my penalty:thumb:

I think he means based off the final rankings, rather than the tournament.

Only problem with that that I can think of, is the four teams in the final four don't necessarily finished ranked 1-4. If you were the tourney runner up, but the coaches poll put you at 3, there would be legitimate beef.

I think it is even more complicated than that. Six teams saw their season end with a loss to UNC. Undo that loss, and each one is undefeated in the Big Dance. If we are moving teams up, how can an undefeated tournament team be anything other than first? It can't and that is why the top spot is left vacant.

I'm the only one in my family that received a quality education. It's really not all that surprising since my family is a tad-polish...

Actually, amphibian ya, my uncle is highly educated as well.

Graduation "gifts" to his players at Kansas. Rampant academic fraud involving his players at North Carolina. And it all comes as a SUCH a surprise to Ole Roy! I wonder if he even knows that his teams won two national titles? :tsk:

You know, its just unreasonable to think that a coach could keep track of 13 players. The rosters are just so large, c'mon, give 'Ol Roy a break

Aww, shucks. Coaches don't know everything that's going on within their program.

Hey, Mark Emmert is actually aware of the academic-fraud investigation at UNC and he actually seems to think it might be a problem. Wonders never cease.

I'm sure UNC will put themselves on harsh probation to satisfy the NCAA, like losing 1 scholarship per sport and some hefty fines... :tsk:

I always chuckle in amazement at the media types that swallow these excuses without asking tough followup questions.

Listen to one of these coaches in an interview with Dickie V or Lee Corso and they act like they know everything that's going on with their team.

Until the isht hits the fan.

Then all of a sudden they "have no idea this was going on".

Comical.

Any effort by Ole Roy to plead ignorance should be met with universal howls of laughter. He knew. Everybody connected to the UNC BB program knew. Somebody in the media needs to call him out.

If a Dukie grad isn't going to put on the cloak of self righteous indignation what chance do the rest of us of have? :p
