Morgan is more of a 'big' than Black. Unfortunately, he isn't very active, can't jump, not much of a rebounder and plays terrible defense. Finke is truly our best option as a 'big' but we need him to get better at defending and rebounding much quicker than he should really be asked. That's on Groce.

The numbers this year show otherwise and personally for me the eye test agrees with that. Morgan has played solidly in the minutes he has gotten. He has been in the right places this year offensively and defensively. Sure he's not a great athlete but his awareness has improved a ton.

How can that be? According to the people here, our coaches can't develop players? Big men especially.

It has taken into his 3rd year for Mav to develop but he still is a long way's away from being a rebounder and defender. He's always had an offensive game and touch going back to last year. I would argue that he is not that much better than he was last year but is just getting more opportunities due to injuries. He has not played much in the last 2 games. There's a reason for that. Might come back to defense and rebounding.

It has taken into his third year but Mav has definitely improved. He was recruited as a project big and wasn't reasonably expected to be a major contributor until this year. He hasn't played much the last two games but a big part of that is matchups. Mav will never be a good choice to try to guard the smaller more athletic big men that the Illini have faced the last couple of games. Mav is going to have to take on a major role when Big Ten season starts and they start facing true bigs. If he can't give substantial minutes during Big play, Illinois is in major trouble.

I think the bolded is true regardless.

No question Finke has been the surprise of the team this season. A very pleasant surprise. Can't wait to see what he does this next few years. I'm imagining a senior Finke with an extra 20-30lbs receiving dishes from his brother.

No doubt. And No doubt that Mike Finke potentially being a really, really good college player will help his brother come here. If he comes here, and never develops into a really good contributor, maybe his brothers shies away.

If Finke continues to improve I don't think we'll see him playing as a senior in an Illini uniform. That's a good thing (He's got everything NBA scouts are looking for). The whole redshirt (Michael)/recruit (Tim) to allow them a chance to play together might end up being Groces' best move yet.

I have to disagree here. I love Finke but he absolutely does not have everything NBA scouts are looking for. He's lacking foot speed and elite level athleticism. Watch him accelerate after pump fakes, it takes him a while to get going. He's got way more than Mav, but no where near NBA level. He would have a hard time guarding a PF at the NBA level. Athleticism wise he is average to maybe slightly above, also not near NBA level. He does have a lot going for him though, and may make the NBA, just don't think he has the scouts drooling.

Well for lack of a better place I'll put this here:

I did an analysis of this season based on the fightingillini.com play-by-play data. Some of my findings are below. Any other suggestions for different aspects to analyze?

This is a plot of our season average "game flow" in both wins and losses

I thought it was interesting that even in losses we stay pretty tight for the first 14-15 minutes before falling apart. Also, even in wins we have a 4-5 minute stretch near the start of the 2nd half where we suck.

This is a plot showing the distribution of our contributions in contested games. I counted a "positive play" as a made basket, steal, rebound, assist, or block. Not normalized for playing time.

And here I've done an analysis of what our best and worst lineups are. The play-by-play data can be kind of spotty keeping track of substitutions so these are pretty good but not 100% perfect. Also consider some of the sample sizes are small, so for FG% I considered a minimum of 10 shots made or missed and for 3p-fg% I considered a minimum of 5 shots made or missed.
