Their def is good their offense isn’t. Rutgers is predominantly a running team. Wimsat is not a good passer. I am sure if anyone know the Ia def it is BB.

PSU beat Iowa because Iowa’s defense couldn’t get off the field. I didn’t watch the ISU game.

We cannot leave points on the field. If you go for it on 4th down u need to convert. Cannot miss PAT or FGs

Iowa D is good but I think we are capable of big plays but the O Line needs to show up

Take the emotion out of it, and considering Altmyer is 100%, you start Almyer against Iowa on the road. Paddock played an amazing game at home against a 3-7 team and shined at the end of the Minny game. This is Iowa on the road though. Altmyer starts but a big part of me wants to see Poddock just to see if the magic continues.

Letting them score was the right decision. It didn’t work out as Tepper had hoped, but it was definitely the right call.

No, no, one thousand times no.

We were ahead by 4 points. There were multiple ways we could have won that game - stop them, false start, fumble, etc. - but Tepper's "plan" was to try to get to overtime (no way to foresee failed PAT) by moving the ball 40+ yards in <45 seconds on a day where we had thrown the ball for fewer than 40 yards total. He should have been fired before he could get on the flight home.

The trick against Iowa is to play sound fundamentals and not get greedy. As long as we avoid giving them extra possessions we have a good chance of winning a low scoring affair. Need to match their solid fundamentals which will be a tough ask for this year's team.

Play smart, responsible football, get a big day from #4(potentially on both sides of the football), and we have a chance in this one.

I did a little digging into the meaning behind the surname 'Paddock.' I was going to come back here to astonish everyone.

Unfortunately, after several intense seconds of pouring over Google search results, the origin of the name relates to, "Toad, frog."

That's got to mean something, right? I mean, I'm not getting that time back so...

I agree. I appreciate what Paddock did in his opportunities the last two games, but it is virtually a guarantee that he will not see the clean pocket he has seen over the last 4 quarters plus one drive. Minnesota played some of the worst defense at the end of the game, and IU did not seem to get much pressure at all for most of the game and receivers were open all day. That is the recipe for 500+ passing yards allowed. Paddock did make some fantastic throws, but as we have seen against us over the past decade or so: when you do not get any pressure on the QB, they tend to pick you apart.

It is contrary to a majority of opinions on this board, but I believe that Altmyer is still the best chance the Illini have at beating Iowa. If Altmyer is fully healthy, I believe his legs are going to be needed in this game. Let's not forget, but Altmyer has played fairly solid since the Penn State game.

Any insiders know how close Altmyer was to passing concussion protocol for the IU game? If he starts against Iowa and starts, do you see the staff switching to Paddock?
It would be prudent for all concerned to rally around Paddock both for team momentum as well as Luke’s well being. You only get one brain.

In June ‘22 I was concussed at least as severely than Luke. I was allowed to gradually return to sport after about a week, but the key was gradually increasing exertion and avoiding anything that might cause another impact for several more weeks. You can safely ramp up exercise to full intensity, but even after full exertion is OK another minor impact can cause more serious injury than the original. There’s no magic number of days after which you’re 100% good as new. Impact risk fades slowly regardless of protocols.

Given our great backup situation and the probability of multiple sacks, Luke would be prudent to sit out Iowa, maybe Northwestern too.

Paddock should start, period. If he fails, go to Altmyer.

Illinois has played 1,293 football games over the last 132 seasons. Plenty of those games were against mediocre to poor defenses, and never once has one of our QBs thrown for that many yards against a poor defense until Saturday.

Prognostication:

First, I’ll let Coach B choose our QB this week. It’s his job and he knows (a) college football, and (b) our locker room, better than me. I trust his decision.

20 Iowa
12 Illini

Our defense is just not sound and responsible enough this year. Feagin and Pat Bryant injuries concern me. We keep it close throughout, but get frustrated by the defensive lapses. Iowa covers.

6-4 against the spread (ATS) year to date
8-2 choosing the winner (missed MD & WI)

NOW START PADDOCK, RIDE THE WAVE, AND UPSET THE HAWKS!!!

He leap-frogged Altmyer for QB1

You could make just as much of an argument that Paddock's quick release is necessary against Iowa as Altmyer's running.

I think you have to go with the hot hand. It’s likely we use both.

What are the injuries to Feagan and Bryant?
It looked to me at the time like Feagin took hit to the rib cage, jackknifing when he slammed into a bent-over defender after catching that pass. It was the 2nd play on this highlight video.

They put him back in much later on 4th and short, a superb ”feint substitution”, since he didn’t carry on that play. On a later play he exited again clutching his torso. If a rib, hopefully it‘s just bruised. Fractured would put him out for the season.

A sportswriter speculated shoulder injury. Either shoulder or ribs could explain holding the arm to the torso. However, shoulder seems less likely to have allowed him to return like he did.

This is a tough game but if they have a weakness on D it is play action and accurate passing. I also noticed the PSU QB running from time to time was something that they couldn’t stop. We’re not going to run the ball down their throats.

On D we have to avoid the one thing that they do well: Tight end splitting the seam for big gains. Also need to pressure the backfield. Note to Henry - timely blitzes will help. Don’t be a scared cat.
And quit with the 20 yd deep safety already. It's like playing 10 against their 11.

On the one play the Illini deep safety did make against Indiana (Resetich interception) he was able to do so because Xavier Scott (#14, who got abused all day) clearly grabbed and briefly held the intended IU receiver, which prevented him from getting to where the ball was thrown. Happened right in front of us on the east side and we were amazed that there was no flag from the flag-happy referees.

And let's turn Kenari Wilcher loose on kickoff returns. Speed burns and maybe we can steal a page from Iowa's playbook with a special teams score.

14 is Xavier Scott.
