Wow! Robert made a reference to Dwayne Smith. I coached that kid way back in 1991-92 in Rantoul. He was 5th grader that started on the 6th grade team I coached. Great kid!!!

"Saturday will be Illinois' first game on NBC during the new Big Ten television agreement, although the Illini have played on NBC before. The Illini played in the first nationally televised college football game on NBC during the 1952 Rose Bowl Game, a 40-7 Fighting Illini victory over Stanford. The Illini also played on NBC during the 1964 Rose Bowl and 1984 Rose Bowl, while NBC owned the Rose Bowl's broadcast rights from 1952-1988."

So, we are 2-1 all time on NBC, if I read that correctly. That should help. j/k

OC Barry Lunney Jr.: "The fix is not far off. There's a razor-thin line of success and failure."

A shutter went through me when I read that quote.

No, BLJ. There's a line between success and failure. If he really believes there's a line of success and failure then he implies that the two reside on the same line and likely he can't distinguish between them.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Splitting hairs, pedantic, old fogey-ish. Nevertheless, I don't get the feeling that the man thinks clearly. This is an example.

I can't recall ever being sufficiently invested in Illini football to the point at which I actively dislike one of our coordinators. Yet here I am. That Nebraska goal line stand on Friday broke me.

[EDIT: I can't resist adding that, for BLJ, the fix better not be far off. If it isn't then unemployment won't be far off.]

Take Maryland and the points. Bet your house, farm, car, etc. This team is brutal. Last year seems like it was a million years ago. I had hope for Illinois football for the first time in a really long time. I realize this is 1 season but what about what you have seen so far this year inspires any hope for the future?

How does Las Vegas think we will stay within 12? I'm totally serious, is this a joke?

Maryland 48
Illini 9
they arent predicting the score will be 12 points apart
they just set the line at a number they think they will get even money wagered on both sides
yea, sometimes it moves a little during the week

but I agree with you in general , I think it should be set more like at 18 or 19 , but what do we know?

I understand what you are saying. But we as fans make it seem like there is a huge difference between a good team and a bad team. In reality it is on missed block/tackle that makes or breaks every play. In a course of a game there are probably 10 plays that directly impact the outcome of the game

It sucks right now because the last couple games we were not competitive

Vegas/books do not care about predicting the score nor are they in that business. As stated by Mr. Tibbs, they set the line to get action (preferably even action); when betters start heavily betting Maryland ATS (as some on the board are wishing to do), then the line will begin to balloon. I believe that the line will ultimately settle around Maryland -18 to -20 when all is said and done by kickoff, possibly even higher. We have already seen books move 2 to 3 points already. Don't expect that to stop. The conservative range for final spread will be anywhere from -14.5 to -24.5.

I do scratch my head slightly why the line started so close, but it might be the way the second half went for Maryland last week. My honest guess is that the books wanted to get money in on this game, so the spread started at a ridiculously low number and will adjust to market factors.

It's poor play calling plain and simple. With our O-line we are not capable of executing the plays they are trying to run. Have to quit running plays that take too long to develop because we can't hold our blocks. Also have to run pass plays that get the ball out of Altmyers hands quicker. Lunney has failed to recognize what will and won't work. As long as he is here our offense will struggle.

I know you all think I’m overly optimistic but people rarely predict a big upset. This may be the one.

Let Luke sling it is all I can say. Half roll outs, etc. The only way we have been able to move the ball is through the air. And TAKE POINTS THAT ARE GIVEN unless you need a TD.
So this is where Luke struggles. While he has the legs, he's not particularly accurate while throwing on the run. It's definitely a weakness of his and is actually the reason for at least half of his picks this year. That said, Luke has shown signs of being a truly excellent pocket passer with above grade timing and accuracy, which quite frankly is what you hope and pray for in a qb. Unfortunately, his line isn't capable of maintaining a clean pocket in the slightest. So even though Luke has wheels, he's just not Steve Young as a passer which is sort of what we require with how much our qb needs to run for his life.

Other than that, I agree with you. Lunney needs to spread it out, call quick developing passing plays, (1 step to at most 3 step timing), always give Luke at least 1 hot route option, and try getting a running game going. In this scenario you also really would like to involve your RB as a safety valve in the passing game, but unfortunately, that is one area where losing Chase has really hurt us as our RBs just don't seems to have even close to the same hands or route running

Absolutely no reason we can't be hammering smash concepts with Tip and Isiah to get the ball out fast and accurate. Washington has shown in the past he can beat zone by finding a whole in the zone and sitting down. Bryant is your deep threat in case we actually get some protection. Hopefully we can build around those concepts and spread out the defense to create some openings in the running game.

It's also very clear we don't have an OL that can beat people straight up. We need to be running lots of counter and wham blocking scheme in the running game to help open wholes. Never let the DL know where the block is coming from
