Kind of funny (although understandable) that NU is promoting this one as sold out on their social media - a 30% increase in attendance from their last home game vs. Maryland.

Uh, yeah, I wonder why that is! :hailtotheorange:
Maryland basketball fans do not travel well.:)

If you're Northwestern, I don't know how you stop that short of becoming a consistent winner and selling out season tickets. And I'm okay with that.
Yep, they are in an INCREDIBLY similar (practically mirror) situation to Vanderbilt in Nashville. Small, private school with little fan appeal to your average local that didn't go there. Not historically good at sports. In a city that serves as not only a popular post-grad destination for other conference teams' alumni but ALSO a fun weekend trip to go see your team play in a location with more entertainment than the college sports itself.

I don't know how either would ever stop their stadiums and arenas from being taken over.

I lived in Chicago from 1996 to 2004. Went to every Illini NW basketball and football game. Those were the glory days of Illini basketball.

Football was hit or miss as Fitzgerald then Walker had NW at its best and Illlini struggled under Tepper but had 2 great seasons under Turner. Including 2001 B10 championship and Sugar Bowl bid. Regardless Illini fans would take over Ryan Stadium and match if not outnumber NW fans.

Strong analogy. What puzzles me is that Welsh-Ryan (7k) is half the size of Vandy's arena and 25% smaller than Cameron Indoor and yet they can't pull merely 6k NW fans for a game v. Illinois? (I assume it's a similar problem v. Wisc., Michigan, MSU, Purdue, IU, OSU, Iowa)

Seems not a heavy lift, particularly because Collins' teams have been competitive and entertaining. Yet it apparently is.

This is why it's not a rivalry game.

funny story :
about 20 years ago , in the early 2000’s, we played at NU on a Saturday night - like a 6:00 or so start . my boys were like 10 & 8. we stopped at the Portillos on Dempster in Morton Grove for the usual .

we get to our crappy seats , that I was able to get in the upper balcony , and watch the game . it’s like super stuffy and about 10 degrees too hot and CROWDED . At about half time , my one lad starts telling me he doesn’t feel good . soon he tells me , fairly loudly , that he’s gonna throw up .

everyone heard it . instantly , everyone within 10-12ft of us scramble away as quickly as possible as no one wanted to wear that

my boy goes to the restroom , but never actually needs to vomit. came back to the seats, gave everyone two thumbs up , and was welcomed back , but it was never as crowded as it was prior .
