If you don’t want to drink, fine … but it’s been a part of European and by extension American culture for centuries. The pitch to get other people to abstain is a pointless and losing battle, but I applaud anyone who chooses not to drink for his own personal reasons.

For sure, I was just being "conservative" and sort of counting millennia as "centuries and centuries."
As for Wisconsin, yeah ... I go to Door County at least once per year, I have a very good family friend from Wisconsin and I in general have a lot of fondness and respect for the state. However, due to Illinois generally being underrated when it comes to that sort of Midwest/beer-drinking cultural image and Wisconsinites already having a plenty-inflated ego in this regard, I make a habit out of not tooting their own horns for 'em.
On a serious note, one of my more niche interests is the history of religious denominations in the US and specifically how the prevalent denomination(s) in a given region really affected that region's culture, even up until today. Just using the Midwest and Upper South on that map, you can really see that where Lutherans were more prominent, alcohol was a way bigger part of the culture. Then when you get to the lower Midwest like Kansas where Methodists would have far-outnumbered Lutherans, it's a bit more lightly colored, as they were sort of split on alcohol historically.
