Let us begin the Illini revenge tour:

Round 1: Chattanooga (for 1997)
Round 2: Kelvin Sampson
Round 3: Arizona (for...any of the 8 times they beat Illinois since 2000)
Round 4: Loyola (for last year)
Round 5: Kansas (Self-inficted) or Auburn (a Pearl of a program)
Round 6: Purdue (for twice this year) or North Carolina (for 2005)

So you thinkin' the Zips take them down?

No, I just think UCLA has been even more inconsistent than us this year. On paper based on their roster they should be a 1 seed right now, but they've had an awful lot of hot garbage games as well as some gems.

How quickly can trent and Coleman recover from pinkeye? I can’t remember…. Does it affect your vision?
It absolutely impacts your vision. I had it several year ago - not fun. Incredibly itchy, eyes water alot. Usually passes in a day or two. Should be over in plenty of time, just hope it is contained.

Just wanted to reiterate the note from earlier: Chattanooga has not played a single Power 5 Conference Team this year. Not one. Heck, they didn't even play against a team in the AAC or Big East. A10 was as good as they attempted to play. Their SoCon chief rivals Furman and Wofford each played 3.

Their best opponents were Murray State (a loss), Belmont (a loss) and VCU (a win). I don't even think it's a matter of how they matchup against us. We don't know how they matchup against ANYBODY of real substance (Murray State being the exception, but that's another big fish in a small pond). Maybe they match up great and play great and we struggle. But to hear prognosticators talk about potential upsets, there's simply no body of work in which the Mocs can point to and say 'There, this is how we match up against THEM'. It's all opponents-of-opponents stuff.

They've never seen the likes of Kofi or Trent or Plummer or Belo. Especially Kofi.

As one of the few Illini fans in attendance the last time we played these guys in the tournament (1997 in Charlotte, NC), I'm excited and hopeful for a little revenge (even if none of the players on the current roster were even born yet).

In all seriousness, I have faith that our guys will be ready for the moment.

3/7 of their losses to Zona and Gonzaga. They returned a lot of guys who were there and did it last year; they have a legit floor general in Tyger, multiple shooters, and they play excellent defense. I think they are ready to get the tournament started.

Guess we'll just have to see show things shake out.

The only thing I‘m asking for in this tournament is to see Chet Holmgren take a charge from Kofi running down the lane at full bore in the final. Win or lose, if I see that I’m happy.
a light breeze could probably knock holmgren down. a charge from kofi would dam* near kill him. which I'd be totally fine seeing

I like the first round matchup personally. They have one main guy we have to stop and he's 6'4". We've got a couple good guys to stop a player that size. If Smith was 6'7" then we have more of an issue.

Not sure how they stop Kofi unless their center goes back to his WWE roots.

They'll try stopping Kofi by attacking the guards and the entry feed. They have decent length in their backcourt and their bread and butter is defending the 3pt line really well. They will be overly aggressive with our backcourt trying to press us into making mistakes and bad entry passes. Their overcommitting in that regard opens things up to drive to the hoop and ball fakes leading to backdoor cuts. Unfortunately, driving to the basket and backdoor cuts are not something we often do and our guards have been prone to making bad inside feeds and reads when pressured. Lazy passes during our weave will also be picked on by this team. Once we get the ball in to Kofi , in theory things should be pretty good but they'll really try and force us off the 3pt line.

Pick and roll should be good for us in this game, and the pump fake should be our friend so long as we take the ball to the rack after it. Curbelo should be explosive in this one so long as he is smart with the ball and can stay out of foul trouble (sort of a double-edged sword here, as if Curbelo has a day where he's making poor decisions, they have a defense that loves going for the steal and getting easy baskets in transition). Also Kofi and CoHawk need to crash the boards hard in this one.

In any case, based on their numbers and styles, they'll defend Kofi by heavily attacking our guards and limiting our clean entries. I would expect no easy threes or entries in this one unless it's off of one of guards slashing to the hoop or off a pick and roll.

I would rather play Chattanooga than Iowa right now. Man I can think of at least 12 other teams I would rather not play and it's called the BIG. Bring em on!

Perspective check:

The last time we played Chattanooga was in those dreadful Springfield games. The result was… regrettable. Check out the starting lineup. That team would finish last in the B1G this year. So while we bemoan a 4 seed in Pittsburgh, perhaps we should take a moment and appreciate the trajectory underwood has us on.

I know you're not disrespecting Khalid Lewis, the greatest basketball player to ever walk the face of this planet.

From Underwood's press conference previewing Chattanooga:

Brad stated that they figured they'd either be a 3 or 4 going in, depending whether the committee took missing players into account for losses. He stated it seemed like they did in the preview bracket, but did not in this bracket. As a result, the analytics team put together scouting profiles on 3 potential 13 seeds and 3 potential 14 seeds so they'd be prepped for whichever opponent came up for them, and showed the press corps the Chattanooga prep folder he had with him.

So, they've been prepping for Chattanooga already for a couple days in the planning stage, and Underwood is very aware of Malachi Smith (while scouting a little known prospect named EJ Liddell), and De Souza (scouting/recruiting).

He's also expecting the team to play with a fire/urgency they didn't last year, because now everyone knows that it can all end in an instant. They're focused on only one opponent, and making sure they are as prepared as they can be for that opponent.

So I'm confident they won't overlook Chattanooga (though the press corps asked Hawkins/Frazier/Kofi if they felt a sense of revenge from 1997 and Brad responded "None of them were born yet, so they don't really care about that history."

Meet the Mocs! The team Seth Davis referred to as "major conference long and experienced"

Their starting 5 is made up of 3 seniros, a junior and a sophomore (so, the Illini are actually a more experienced team), with 2 seniors and a junior and sophomore getting decent playing time off the bench.

Their bigs are 6-10 255 lb Senior bench player Avery Diggs and 6-9 250 lb starting senior Silvio De Sousa. They aren't in the Kofi range, so expect a lot of doubles (or Kofi dunks, whichever they prefer I guess).

Their major player is Malachi Smith, a 6-4 sophomore who plays 90% of their minutes and takes 28% of their shots while on the floor. Efficient scorer, passing rate similar to Grandison (lower than Curbelo and Frazier), doesn't turn it over a ton.

Smith and De Souza are the focal points of the offense, effectively accounting for over half the team's shots in the game.

Limit Smith and De Souza offensively, draw fouls on their bigs, make open shots, and beat them. They're effectively a slow tempo team that isn't great defensively, they just limit points by slowing the tempo. Offensively they're pretty good, but you have to shut down their primary options.

Their best win this season was beating VCU away. The only tournament team they played this season was Murray State, and they lost by 11 on the road. They're about as efficient as Rutgers. Don't take em lightly, take advantage of the height difference down low, and try to push forward when possible.
I’ve said before that I like playing teams that are similarly structured to us. Hot around the perimeter, maybe leaning on one guy for a lot of points. Depend on a big man down low to get a lot of shots. I will take Kofi and Trent guarding those two any day. Our other guys and bench need to bring some fire to this one to make a bigger difference.

A minor aside, and This may have already been said, but I like that we are playing at night on Friday. I think we play our best when the sun goes down. A couple of our notable losses (MLK Purdue game and the BTT loss) were morning games.

Plus if we do lay an egg Friday or Sunday, I get my maximum enjoyment out of the first tourney weekend 😅
