Not true. We certainly had a few shellackings of inferior teams. Jackson St, Arkansas St, Rutgers at home (not even a bad team), St Francis PA, Minny, scUM at home, Wiscy (again not even an bad team), Indiana at their place. That's a decent number of easy wins. Just haven't had as many of those really recently.
Based on their metrics and size, I would say Chattanooga is actually most like Rutgers in the B10 if Rutgers had better 3pt defense and a worse interior and if Rutgers opted to go post-up more often. Malachi Smith currently is like a more efficient Ron Harper Jr if you can believe that (honestly that sort of blows my mind) and Jean-Baptiste is a better shooting lower rate passer version of Geo Baker. As well Darius Banks has similar metrics to Caleb McConnell. So again, we should beat them on a neutral court so long as we play the way we are capable of, but Rutgers has given us some problems so I do get how Chattanooga seems to be many of the talking head's trendy pick.
Really the doomsday scenario here is if we get a whistle-happy reffing crew that calls a couple quick fouls on Kofi and a few touch fouls on Curbelo and Hawkins. That would pretty much negate the advantage we have over them, plus it's pretty much free points for them every time to get to the line as their starters are around 80% from there.
I guess what one might call “tourney coaching prowess” I’m inclined not o call luck and survivorship bias.
I like how Chris Holtmann will go zone out of time outs to mix things up on a team. However, I can also appreciate when Underwood says “you know what this is a pick n roll team and we have the best pnr defense in the country, why would I over think this?”
I know we aren’t going to see eye to eye on this but I appreciate that we’re all pulling for the team to go on a long tourney run and then we can go back to making fun of Rick Barnes poor coaching (and/or bad luck). And if UT goes on a run we can find somebody else to pick on.

Still outside of UConn over that time basically every champion hits at least 7 (and if I'm remembering correctly, practically 8) of those 12 categories. You can really whittle the field down based on that.

Totally. And I'm not making a case that it doesn't exist either. I would tend to think not until shown otherwise, but that's just a personal trait. There are hundreds of ways a tournament game looks, feels, and runs differently than a regular season game, and there's no reason some coaches might not get their teams to perform better than others under those different circumstances.
That Arizona team was so fun to watch. Miles Simon getting into the lane at will for floaters(something I've wanted us to have since) and Bibby was just a magician with the basketball.

This is an excellent post and perspective. I try my best to follow your advice....it's just for me it goes back to the adage (think Bill Self or Roy Williams or probably multiple people said this), that the losses sting more than the wins are fun. And that's multiplied by 1,000 come NCAA tourney time. Which I get makes no sense as just a fan of a team, and believe me, I try to get myself to stop thinking this way, but after about 30 years it just hasn't happened yet.
So instead of being excited about the opportunity which as you laid out is certainly there and something to appreciate and something I'm hoping to get to Pittsburgh to see first hand if it happens, I just think back to all the past NCAA disappointments and how upsetting they were, and I obviously have work to do to get my attitude in the right place like you have done.
Probably should go see a shrink about this, but I've found it's cheaper having Illinois Loyalty to help me through it.
Hearing it's a good possibility.

Our schedule got much tougher starting 2/8/22 and the results:
Lby16, Wby7, Lby11, Wby5, Lby3, Wby8, Wby5, Wby2, and Lby2
went 5-4 down the stretch.
according to NET rating, Chattanooga 63 would be most closely aligned with Notre Dame 53 or Rutgers 77 which we beat both by double digits at SFC but lost by double digits at Rutgers.

The morning after the Ohio State lost I literally felt sick with disappointment. Then I reminded myself that I've eagerly anticipated every game we've played this year, and that nearly all of them have been intense and exciting, even the losses. That hasn't happened in well over a decade, maybe longer. I'm just grateful that the program is back to that point again, where it belongs, and that I have to force myself not to spend too much time on Loyalty enjoying it. As @sacraig noted, everything else is gravy.
If we do get to AZ, we'll be the underdog with nothing to lose - what gives me hope for that game is:
1) Is Kofi going to play worse or better this time?- I think the answer is he almost certainly will be better, he was 5-15 and just didn't play well, they don't have a big man who can really stop him, they just did a great job playing off him and disrupting his shot - he'll learn from that and be much better IMO
2) Belo - he'll be a difference maker
agreed, he was hitting too many floaters against Illinois. His 2nd half was really good against us. I think the real mismatch is Tubelis though. He's too tall for grandison. He's too strong for Hawkins. Also, Mathurin's highest scoring game of the season was against us. Doubt he will do as well a 2nd time around. RJ is athletic enough and tall enough to stick a guy like Mathurin. Damonte is too small for him.

He missed a lot of 3’s and shots in general, but what else were we to expect with Groce PG’s.

Same here. It's rare that I'd have almost no recollection of an Illini player. I mean, I even remember guys like Greg Eboigbodin and Matic Vessel being on the floor so for a starting player to not stick in my mind must mean they had very little memorable impact.
That's because I'm pretty sure that should have been K Garris in the box score - that was Kiwane's team
Pretty sure this team could make it to the Final Four and some people would still be posting about how we don't beat good teams, the other team is scary, Underwood isn't good at adjusting, Curbelo does this wrong, and blah blah blah.

Yikes. If I recall correctly, Gandy was among those who had a horrible game the last time we met the Moc. Gives me yet another reason to dislike the “grandy“ moniker.
