it seems this might be our most disrespected NCAA tourney team ever. I notice that Seth Davis was trashing us again, and talking about Chatanooga's pending upset in tonight's pre-game show.

I'll just assume it's a good omen in that it may change our luck -- given all the bulletin board material Underwood is collecting this week.
This ^ you have to love it if I'm Brad - National media picking you as a trendy upset pick - Kofi being left off one of the best 10 players in the tournament, I'm mean you couldn't script this any better - the chip on the shoulder is only growing now

There is absolutely no reason for us to play scared or timid this tournament - let it fly and Let's Go!

Seems to me that one striking advantage the beloved has is that in the tournament we are playing against teams that have never experienced quite what we present. Sure, they all have played against typical three point shooters, slashers, and post players, but the things that make our guys a bit different is likely an advantage due to uniqueness from each. Sure, there are lots of guys that are terrific players, but a few of our guys I think will surprise our opponents based on what they’re really good at.
In AC teams have not experienced playing against his uniqueness. There is no one that is 6’ tall that lives in the paint like he does. His ability to break down the defense, get into the paint, and then either finish or dish with incredible vision and passing.
In KC, I think it will be a shock as to his sheer strength, size, and power. He can wear down defenders like none other. Sure they all have faced the prototypical big man….but I would surmise that until you start trying to bang with and move Kofi, you just don’t get how dominating he can be.
Plummer not only is a three point shooter, but gets those shots off so quickly. He creates space, has tremendous elevation on his threes, but does so really quickly. Not common.
CH is pure energy and crazy quick twitch explosiveness for rebounding and shot blocking, it can also shoot the three.
“Elite” defense from TF and DW. Likely will be very disruptive to a teams normal flow. We all know TF dominates a teams best player on D…probably a nightmare for him to be glued to the opposing player.
I think playing teams multiple times in the B1G regular season and B1G tournament helps our opponents know what to expect since they’ve experienced these unique qualities multiple times.
Maybe I’m over thinking things, but it seems to me most of our guys with consistent tick have something that is way different from many or most guys playing their respective positions. Hope that theory pans out to be indeed advantage Illinois.
Expecting an Illini victory that is not a nail biter. Then onto a Houston team that we can handle, albeit a more challenging game.
Good stuff

after the poor performance in 2021 tourney - not sure if any bulletin board quotes are necessary. Do 1, 9, 99 bulletin board items change the way Illinois plays?

We haven't done ourselves any favors to be honest. Not a single time this year have we taken care of business in a decisive fashion against a clearly inferior opponent (maybe only Minnesota?).

If we had beaten a few inferior teams handily (Cincinnati, Penn State, Northwestern) then I think the narrative changes.
What about Rutgers at the Hall in December?

Tennessee Chattanooga:

8/16 team members are from transfer portal. 6/16 team members are redshirt junior, senior, or grad student.

In their conference tourney title game against Furman, what struck me most about them was how calm they looked being down late. Even when suddenly down two with only about 4 seconds to play, coach let them play on without calling a timeout. They effortlessly went far enough past full court to take a long three to win.

Clearly didn't read close enough 🤦🏼‍♀️

Thanks for setting me straight
Nah, you got it right. You just needed to read even closer ... at the twitter responses. Jay Bilas is an idiot. He did us a favor.

I am not at all surprised by this. I'd be interested in what the data look like when considering the size of scoring runs for and against rather than just the quantity.

Agree. Our ability to give up runs approaching 20 points in both wins and losses has been astounding.

To me this is why our tourney run hinges on Belo and why he is our biggest X factor. Can he turn a 17-2 run into a 17-8 run? We sniff the big runs in the butt and we will be a really tough out.

"sniff the big runs in the butt"?

I don't think anybody wants to do that.

Watch Mike LaTulip on the 247 VIP video Dan posted last evening if you haven't. His first example of Belo's value is how he came in after an IU run and his O/D turned in an Illini run that shut IU down.

No slight to Jeremy Werner/Illini Inquirer, but Mike LaTulip deserves a more prominent role in coaching or broadcasting. The young man has a future in basketball if he wants it.
Remind me what he is doing as a career. Is it in the financial sector?

I gotta say. Having been plugged in to all the ncaa tournament shows, the games last night, podcasts, etc….the vibe around the team and fan base isn’t great considering how much success we have had recently. We’ve developed into a whiny fan base (and by some accounts, not mine, a team) that is always mad or complaining about something and a team that just hasn’t quite figured it out. I hope we can change that narrative this weekend. I’m gonna try and do my part, however minimal impact it makes.

It’s also really frustrating hearing talking sports heads talk bad about Belo. The support Belo movement is partially because of the fans attitude towards him, and that’s sad. We need to support our guys no matter what and stop making excuses for why we lost certain games.

I’m pumped for this weekend and ready for a sweet 16 matchup with Arizona 😎

Apologies for the mid day soap box
