MLT: "There were portions of this game that Luke Goode was your best defender." I'm 7 minutes into the MLT defensive breakdown but that pretty well sums it up for me especially with how much discussion there has been about how bad his defense is.

LaTulip’s breakdown is excellent.

One very perceptive observation is how TSJ gets tired and sloughs off in the minute before media timeouts.

I would expand on that though… I think the breakdowns at game ends are happening because our key guys all are tired. Underwood is piling too many minutes on TSJ, Domask, and Coleman. He’s got to a find a way to get all of them a couple more minutes’ rest. IMO.
But according to Brad "no one gets tired" and there in lies the problem doesn't it? He has repeatedly shot that down when I think, at least from watching the film, it's pretty obvious some guys could use a break.

Would heartily recommend watching the LaTulip video if you want to see what happened on D in the PSU game. Summary from the first half of LaTulip's analysis: lack of communication, lack of effort, and allowing PSU to get super comfortable on offense ultimately doomed us.

That clip Mike showed from how we looked on D against Marquette was eye-opening. Night and day difference. So, yeah, we are capable of playing better on D. Significantly better. And we've stopped doing the stuff that made our D great earlier in the year. That's on players and that's on coaching.

I think the "we were good defensively early in the year" is way overblown. Our good defensive numbers came against Marquette, Rutgers, and 7 cupcake games. The FAU game is when our defense started slipping. IMO, that isn't enough of a sample size to stay we had a good defense.
Watch the LaTulip video and see if your opinion changes. The issues that are plaguing our defense right now are fixable. They are obvious and they make a huge difference.

Indeed. Essentially proves the cupcake theory to be incorrect as he breaks down film essentially 1:1 from Penn St versus Marquette which illustrates perfectly the vast differences in effort and communication from then to now.

Also as others have pointed out the actual metrics take into account the level of comp.

This, and also most P5 teams non-conf schedules are going to have a lot of those types of teams. I can just watch the games and tell you that our defense has absolutely tanked from where it was prior to Jan 1 (or thereabouts).

Quincy looks a lot less aggressive. Coleman brings it on D one game and then is okay-to-terrible the next. Harmon looks serviceable one game and then the next looks completely helpless and clueless. Luke is being hunted by opponents. Domask had to take on a much bigger role on offense - first with TJ being out, second with taking on more ballhandling responsibility - which I think has hurt his defensive play. TSJ doesn't look as aggressive defensively as he did.

We are 3rd to last in the country in forcing turnovers. How the hell do we have the best collection of length & athleticism in the conference and be this bad at forcing turnovers? If not for Coleman's 5 steal games, we'd assuredly be dead last in that statistic.

The defense is something that should've been figured out a month ago.

Anyway, to get back to the point-- yeah, I think our defense actually was extremely good earlier in the season. If you want to throw out all of the cupcake games, that's fine. Marquette beat us, but scored only 71 points and there wasn't a parade of layups and dunks. FAU scored 89 but are an elite offense (we shut them down at the end of the game when it mattered). Tennessee scored 86 but only shot 44% and I don't recall a layup line in that game either and they're ranked #5 in the nation. Even looking at Oakland who we held to 53 points, they're 112 in AdjO so higher than Maryland (160) who just put up 80 against us and not much worse than Penn St (91) who dropped 90 on us. Colgate's offense is also comparable to Maryland and we held them to 57.

I think its pretty clear that there was some big regression at some point. I am starting to side with those who want us to scrap all of the switching. We have the personnel to pull it off, but its not working. So let's stop doing it, please.

Hard to force turnovers when the opposition is shooting one bunny after another bunny after another

I don't know if anyone else mentioned it but why doesn't the team try a setup with Amani at 5 with Hawkins at 4 because of the poor form that Quincy is in. Amani just seems really promising in the time we have seen him out there.

Last thing I will say about the Penn State loss. If nothing wakes them up defensively after this game, then the defense will not improve at all. There should be way better effort in this game. The players looked so pissed off the game, so I am holding out hope for what is to come. Show some damn, pride, it has gotten pathetic. This is the best offensive team we have had since 2005, we cannot waste it
Does Underwood deserve any criticism for be unwilling to adjust from man to man defense?
Clearly it is not working as we give up more than 80 points a game right?

You beat me to it, Professor. :) My question still stands: what happened that our D fell off the table in January? Did TSJ's absence and reinstatement mess up the mojo?
I've wondered the same thing.

In addition to the obvious of our seed (directly impacting our ultimate goal of getting to the Sweet Sixteen or beyond) and even a VERY outside shot at a Big Ten title, there are three bulletin board things that these guys should be reminded of as we close out the season:

1. We have not beat Purdue since Ayo was on campus. We have given them three REALLY tough games in the past three seasons (2OT in Champaign and two close losses at Mackey), but they have all been losses. The Boilermakers simply cannot escape Champaign with yet another win this year.
2. While we lost our winning streak over Iowa last year, we still have a long one vs. Wisconsin that dates back to early 2020. Given how they have gone downhill and how desperately we need more Quad 1 wins, we should leave it all on the floor in Madison ... we are more than capable of beating them.
3. On that note and most importantly for Saturday ... we lost our 5-game winning streak over rival Iowa last February in a really hard-fought loss in Iowa City. That should piss these guys off enough to want revenge, but we also have not lost to Iowa in Champaign since BU and staff turned this program around (i.e., our last loss in Champaign was way back in 2019). You are the better team hosting a rival with your backs up against the wall ... pride and effort is ALL it should take to come out on top Saturday. Zero excuse not to bring it!

I think people are wrong in saying our defense was bad vs. FAU. Sure, FAU has gone downhill since then, but they were a top 11 team and played REALLY well against us. FAU might have scored almost 90 points, but it's mostly because we almost scored 100. We held them under 50% shooting, we out-rebounded them defensively and we scored 16 points off of their turnovers.

Both teams simply played really well, and we came out on top by nine. That was MUCH more about a great performance from us than any flaw in FAU, IMO.

I am very interested in this but don't have 51 minutes. Does anyone have the CliffsNotes?
Switching has left a lot to be desired. Also pointed out that TSJ, while an “elite” on ball defender, had numerous mental/effort lapses. Usually before media timeouts when he’s gassed.
