Wasn’t the NU beatdown last year white pants? Not a look I disapprove of … if we do orange jerseys, I hope helmet or pants are white.

Have we ever done a W/O/O combo?

Edit: NM...found it

Ugh. It makes no difference in the grand scheme of things and didn't even seem to at the time, but that was a dang first down.

I'm going to tell you something I've kept to myself for years -- None of you ever knew Red Grange. It was long before your time. But you know what a tradition he is at Illinois...

And the last thing he said to me -- "Bret," he said - "sometime, when the team is up against it -- and the breaks are beating the boys -- tell them to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Galloping Ghost...

I don't know where I'll be then, Bret", he said - "but I'll know about it - and I'll be happy."

Illinois -- 35
Iowa -- 3
Bielema -- Contract exension

Amazingly, we have gif evidence to confirm the validity:

I think there has been a little too much disrespect toward Iowa (which I completely understand, I want to blow them out too). But let's remember they still have an elite defense and they make a ton of plays on special teams. Petras is bad, but he has only thrown 2 INT's this year. They haven't given up a fumble yet and they have turned teams over 1.8 times per game.

As much as their fans hate it, Iowa is going to come in here and play very conservative and wait for us to make some bad mistakes. Petras isn't going to try and force a ball on 3rd down like Mertz did. They are happy to punt it away and play the field position game, if that's what it takes to win.

I think with how big this game is and playing at night at home in front of the biggest crowd in a long time, we will try to be aggressive and take some shots/have a few trick plays ready.

I think some fans are getting a little too confident after the Wisconsin game, when it reality this a completely different and much tougher game IMO.

I'll be perfectly happy with an 8-6 win (2 FG's and a safety).
I would also be happy with 4 safeties for 8-0 win. I've seen them play twice and I just don't think they are very good.
We are blessed with a weak west division this year and we are probably the 3 or 4 best team in the east. First or Second
in the west is now what we are measuring ourselves by, get used to it. Our fans and players don't know how to be confident.
That's what coach B is teaching and that's my expectation. (You can forget my forum name if I'm wrong!)

Does anybody know how far we are from a sellout? It looks like we have a ways to go. View attachment 20381
If you go into the website and drill down into the seat detail of each section, while it is not sold out it looks like there are a lot more sold/unavailable than our first few games this year. Granted, a lot of those could be Schmuckeye fans, and the Horseshoe still has a lot of available seats.....but I have to think the interest is growing for the O&B. I live in TX and have watched the games on TV.....the east side always looks so friggin' sparse. They rarely show the east side except when they have the camera on the commentators in the booth....typically when they get a broad crowd/stadium shot they show the west side, which doesn't look nearly as bad.

Any chance McCray plays? We could use him in a rock fight with a team like this. Think there's no chance Iowa's offense is any threat to us, just gotta avoid turnovers. Run it all day and only ask DeVito to throw when we need to. I'm predicting Iowa to finish with fewer than 200 yards. I think we could really toast them if we wanted, but the play calling might just stay a little more conservative because of how terrible their offense is.
Bielema has been cagey about this, but consistently positive about McCray's progress. I'm feeling good about a gametime thumbs-up to stoke the emotion a little more.

It will be an interesting game. Last year after the big PSU win - IL laid an egg. Last year after the big MN win, IL laid an egg.

Hopefully this year they've figured it out. They do have a better passing attack which will help vs. Iowa.

For those of us who are a bit more visual, here you go... Other than the spike in interest/excitement after the Lovie hire, it's been a clear downward trend since the Rose Bowl season.

Great chart. The Beckman hire was not a good one. Lovie got a first year bounce, but his play young strategy took us to new attendance lows. I’m surprised how much of a drop there was in Zook’s 2nd year, but attendance rebounded quickly with success. I’m also surprised there wasn’t much of a bounce for Bielema in year one, though Covid could have been a factor.

Bottom line: win and fans come. It happened in the early 1980s as presented in another post.

A couple more final thoughts on attendance:

1) I think it goes without saying our fans are incredibly underrated and loyal, and the evidence is there that we have a HUGE “ceiling” fan base. Beat us down into depression annually?? There will still be 35k+ tickets sold to play a small school. Give us a sliver of hope?? 45k in the stands immediately. Give us a surprisingly great season following multiple 2-10 type campaigns?? No problem, we’ll sell out our home games and bring 35k to the Rose Bowl! I think we all know the potential is there, and we’re just overly eager to get back there.

2) On that last note, the program APPEARS to be turning around infinitely faster than anyone expected, and many of us are desperate for the fan support to match such a dramatic turnaround. Fans in the stands aren’t just essential for a home field advantage (think of the games mediocre Iowa teams have scrapped out simply because of Kinnick before…), it’s a huge draw for recruiting. Many players simply want to play in a cool atmosphere and packed house. Saturday is the perfect chance to show that Memorial Stadium can be seen as one of the great venues/environments of Big Ten football if the team is tough and the fans are pumped! While I’d love a sellout, the fact we’ll have 55k and what will no doubt be our best atmosphere since UNC in 2016 is incredibly encouraging! And … I know we aren’t used to this as Illini fans … but the intensity in Memorial Stadium just might make the difference.

Remember the last time we hosted Iowa in basketball?? We likely don’t scrap out that victory without the incredible home court advantage that is the State Farm Center. I’m desperately ready for Memorial Stadium to become the same thing for football!!
Should be a close game tomorrow night:

Defense: slight advantage Iowa (or even)
Offense: advantage Illinois
Special Teams: advantage Iowa

This is the type of game in which home field advantage can be the difference.

X-factors: #1 and the Saturday night home crowd at Memorial Stadium

If the Illini keep the ball (0-1 turnovers) and minimize penalties, the good guys win.

Go Illini!

Last year was last year. Different offense, different QBs, different OC.

Last year the Illini did not win two in a row. This team is on a 3 game win streak right now.

This seems like a 1999 or 2007 like season. But we’ll know a lot more in the next two weeks…

Go Illini!

Sellout crowd, I do believe!
I was there. A really good game that felt at the time like a real taking a stand moment for the Ron Zook era, to get to 5-4 in what had been a frustrating season.

Only needed a win against Bill Cubit's Western Michigan the next week to achieve bowl eligibility and keep the ship rolling. Weird that they scheduled this game in Detroit huh?

We went 0 for our next 9 against FBS opposition.

Comes down to turnovers and special teams.

Their offense won’t be able to move the ball on our defense, but if they get a couple of short fields, they wouldn’t have to.

I think we secure the ball and come away with a big win.

Good guys: 13
Hawkeyes: 6

Yeah, the WMU loss is when the Rose Bowl enthusiasm truly died for good. When it took a serious hit for me before this, though, was a totally avoidable loss at home to Minnesota that year. The 2008 and 2009 Illini - 8-14… - still baffle me.
