Get to know the Loyola Ramblers!

9th in KenPom, 10th in NET rankings, 3-2 against Quad 1 (losses at Wisconsin, Drake, wins at Drake and neutral vs Drake and neutral vs Georgia Tech), 4-2 against Quad 2 (losses at Indiana State and neutral vs Richmond, wins at Missouri State x2, at Indiana State, and vs North Texas).

They run at almost the slowest tempo in D1 (342nd of 355 teams), which makes their already good defense look better than it is and limiting possessions (think Wisconsin but good defensively).

Offensively, they excel at shooting (adjusted eFG is 9th in the nation), but not offensive rebounding or FT generation, and are middle of the road in committing turnovers.

Defensively, they limit fouls, control the defensive boards, generate turnovers, and limit effective FG%.

Best win is probably the game they just played, or an 81-54 win at Drake in February. Worst loss was a 5-point loss to Indiana State way back in early January.

Typical starting lineup is 6'0" 180 lb Braden Norris, 6'1" 180 lb Keith Clemons, 6'4" 208 lb Lucas Williamson, 6'7" 235 lb Aber Uguak, and 6'9" 255 lb Cameron Krutwig. Norris and Clemons are their long distance shooters, while Uguak is shooting almost 72% from 2 point range. Krutwig is the center of the offense, and their primary distributor. They like to work it into Krutwig, wait for teams to double him, and he'll pass out to open shooters. Defensively, Williamson is the steals generator while Krutwig prevents teams from getting ORs.

Observing some of the other games that are in progress, my confidence grows!!

Play D very well and we have a good shot

Loyola's guards seem slow and small, not a good combo against Trent and Curbs. Not much chance against Ayo.

With that said, I'm perfectly ok with someone knocking off Oklahoma St. before we get to them!
Granted it is a very small sample size, but I watched Oklahoma St. today and wasn't impressed. For a team that many said was woefully underseeded, they struggled against Liberty.

The last time we played Loyola, if anyone's wondering.

Who could forget the immortal Sammy Ice? (pre-conference play)

anytime i see nick fazekas' name i think of self's assistant jim dooley saying "eff you" to him in the post game handshake line after the wolfpack won at allen
Same here.

I saw Dooley at O'Hare once a year or two ago, and I like to think that if I wasn't in a hurry at the time, I would have hissed "[forget] you, Fazekis!" at him.

Georgia Tech shot 57% for the game and lost by 11. How’d that happen?

Loyola won the 3 point line (11-3).
Loyola won offensive rebounds (13-1).

They clearly have the optimum defensive strategy of “no 3s, no fouls, no 2nd shots). Make an opponent beat you with 2s. Even Tech hitting 57% wasn’t good enough. I feel like Loyola will have same game plan vs Illinois. They will single cover Kofi, and dare him to score 30+.

A few years back I was back in town and went to Zorba's and learned I was in a picture on the wall. That was pretty cool.
This was my reaction when I was on the wall in Ubben. I'm also on the wall in the Krush renovations in the stadium but that's cause they used pictures from my senior year haha.

Mine was because I was front and center at the '07 football win at Ohio State and the newspaper story was hanging on the wall.

Well Illinois isn't Ga. Tech. Ga. Tech was missing their best player and the best player in the ACC. Loyola can try whatever strategy they want it won't be good enough.

This game will be painful for newer fans who are attracted to a fast pace, high scoring game in the 80s from the talented Illini. Like Drexel, the Ramblers will make you work hard on defense for 25 seconds on every possession which, if our guys play well, may develop into an 8 pt. lead after 14 hard played minutes.....and then disappear in a two turnover, two foul, drained three plus an and one....and all of a sudden they are tied or lead by 2. B1G play decades ago stressed that every possession could win or lose the game and had to be played without blunders. Loyola must be considered such a game. Though they may not be as quick and athletic, their team has a collective understanding of executing that equals or exceeds that of the Illini. Patient to a flaw, they believe in what they do and will continue to do it regardless of score. But, they do not have the depth of our guys. If the Illini come to play defense with a vengeance for 40 minutes and do not have any mental lapses, they will win by 8-15 pts.

It is difficult to imagine that this team, especially the upper class guys who have worked so hard for so long to enjoy this success, would not be ready from the tip. But this is college hoops and we have seen a million things happen over history that no one believed could....so there is that. It is up to Trent, Ayo, Georgi, and DFW to lead this team and set the tone from the tip. I have watched Loyola play a dozen times over the course of Krutwig's career. They are impressive in their ability to max out their advantages. It should be a close game for 30 minutes, but I expect several runs by both teams to keep the fans involved. The Illini have also showed more patience recently, and then striking like a rattler at a glimpse of an advantage. Fortunately, that patient, quick strike ability is an advantage they need to use effectively to win on Sunday.
