Purdue 77, Illinois 71 Postgame

Another pivotal play in the second half was Hawkins dunk attempt were Edey got all wrist. Should have been a foul and a T. I've seen plays this year where the guy got all ball and still got called for a foul, just ridiculous. I believe that changed the momentum of the game.
What really burned me on that also was Bardo saying what a great "block" by Edey...c'mon Stephen????

Just as a change of pace, I’d like to see DGL in a few possessions to see if he can slow quicker guards.

The second we went to Moretti and immediately gave up points ... My mind immediately went to DGL and Buck ...

DGL would have brought the fire against Purdue ... Trust me ...

Moretti doesn't have any bite defensively ... Not hating on the kid ... It just is what it is ...

Hawkins had his hand in the rim and Eden’s paw was holding it there.

My thoughts:

3 ball killed us in the 2nd half. I thought doubling edey at the start of the half got them in rhythm.

Tsj didn't look right from the start. Not sure if he's hurt or if it was just the two fouls getting him out of rhythm.

Thought dain should have been in the game instead of Amani.

We got beat at home. We just can't lose that game. I've been all in on this team all year. I've thought this team is our best chance to go deep in the tournament in a very long time. Im not sure about that anymore. Very disappointing!!

One more thought. Not sure why goode was in vs. Quincy.

Second half: Doubling Edey, not getting TSJ more shots, not playing DD, Harmon not good, transition D. Losers. Very disappointing. We can play better, but didn't.

Tips my hat to Purdue!! Now I have to sit here all night and question and wonder.....if we play our butts off on defense will that have us scoring 20 points less a game because of the exerted energy on that defensive end. Or will we look at this game and and think lets just try to outscore everyone??? I couldn't help but wonder as the game moved further and further along if sometimes seniors on senior night tighten and sometimes others play as if its just another game? What was the total points/rebounds for all our seniors combined and how much was just Domask ??? I'm gonna try to just take the positives from this game....fought hard and played better defense.

A deep run is still on the table. We can score with anyone so we’ll be in every game. I think it’s still just us and Duke who have no double digit losses. It just took a Herculean effort and a few weird unlucky bounces for #1 to beat us.

We gave up too many open 3s in the second half, that’s partly why they made more of them. Yeah they made a tough one at the end, but thought the D was much better 1st half than 2nd half and that’s why we were winning then weren’t

TSJ needs to pound the offensive boards more. He’s a physical presence and I don’t get why he doesn’t do that more. And I noticed the offense always has him standing around on the flank. Underwood loves saying they don’t call plays for TSJ, but maybe they should. Not blaming him at all. 13 games back and he’s been on fire. One down game is expected once in awhile. But when he’s having a down game there’s ways to spark him to get going.

If we aren’t going to be a great defensive team, we just can’t have an off night shooting against a good team. I think it’s that simple.

When QG is on his game, I don’t think anyone can beat us. He has got to start playing up to his potential for us to go far. We are good without him, but with him we might be the best team in the country. We had him for a half tonight.

Edey got some rim, too. Should’ve been goal tending.
He didn’t get rim. He pinned CH’s had to the rim.

Guys, complain all you want about the decision to double Edey out of halftime, but we were winning by 2 with 3:25 and then:

Loyer made a 3
Harmon missed an open 3
Loyer made a jumper
Shannon missed a layup
Smith missed a jumper, but they got the board, Loyer was fouled and made 2 FT

That’s a 7-0 run in 2 mins. Ball game.

Purdue made plays at the end. Illinois’ veteran players didn’t.
True, but we threw away all of the work of the first half in the first three possessions of the second half. We had no margin the rest of the game, and thanks to those three possessions, Purdue had found their shooting mojo.

That nighty nite motion from Smith near the end after his three was unwarranted, unsportsmanlike and should have been Teed up.
Hawkins probably would have gotten one for that, but that’s not a technical. I personally find the ice in the veins or whatever the injection celebration is more offensive but didn’t really bother me much when Ayo did it.

We were running 🏃‍♂️ their sneakers off of them the first 5 minutes of the game. Officials decided on purpose to slow it down and put our players on divorce proceedings with 2 fouls each. While letting Edey go over the back for offensive rebounds, illegal screens, and tip outs. Completely slowed down the game and the manner in which our High octane offense was flowing.
I do not make excuses for the way we play Piss poor defense, but tonight the game was changed by officials after 5 minutes.

I will say this, if we can not play defense, especially transition defense at the 3 pt. Line we are done! TS jr. Was fouled atleast 20x tonight with no call.
In closing, no adjustments from staff once refs decided to make gambling money. And No Dainja equals loss.
You do not lose on home court and Senior night.
kudos to all Former Illini Legends for showing up. Staff, players, and officials let them down. Damn what a turn out of Illini legends.
