Reftastrophy aside, if it all comes together with Belo in the fold, watch out. Those rolls BBV was catching? Now imagine Kofi getting 3-4 of those a game instead of exhausting himself getting deep post position every offensive possession. You can run the spread when Curbelo sits and hammer P&R when he’s in while keeping good shooting around him. The offense was already excellent, now it’s a problem.

Sadly, I don't think he has a future in the NBA at all. He is a dominant college player, but his game just doesn't translate. I'm sure he can still earn some good money internationally though.
And also earn a good bit here with NIL. I hope he does well here financially and stays a couple more years. Unless something changes drastically. He certainly is passing much better now

Absolutely. Also in both games, Kofi played poorly. I honestly think he's got a chip on his shoulder about NBA scouting reports and draft projections and let's that get the better of him in some of these big games. He's a lot more out of control when playing bigs that can match his size even though we know he has the post moves. It's like he feels he needs to prove his strength and forgets his skill.
Agreed. Another thing was he didn’t get to play much at all with belo. Those passes he fed BBV are dunks

Payne was effective with his arms but not his body. BBV did a better job getting low and preventing Williams/Edey from getting the positioning they wanted underneath the basket (at least did as good a job as can be expected with those guys, considering even Kofi couldn't stop them from backing him down).
Sure, but BBV ended up with 20 minutes, Payne just 7, even though Payne was the first option spelling Kofi off the bench. Did Payne even see the floor the 2nd half or overtime? I may be misremembering, but I don't think he did. I have to think the reason behind that has to do with the flagrant, rather than effectively using his body. Especially since he completely shut down Trevion Williams. I don't care if it was arms, body or just good luck, he did his job.

Between this game and Arizona, I think it's safe to say that Kofi now understands what life could look like in the NBA, if that is what he decides to do after this season. Things are a little different when you don't have 6 inches and 50 lbs on the guy guarding you.
This x 1,000.

If you have this game on DVR, I dare you to go back and slo-mo all of the questionable calls, and then tell me how it was. Very, very few games are decided by the refs, but this one was. OT is irrelevant, because the refs are the only reason it went to OT. Worst performance by the refs I've seen this year, JMHO.
I actually did watch this at home and replayed multiple calls. The refs weren't perfect (shocker!), but it averaged out roughly in the end. They let some stupid !!!! go from our team too. If you've actually watched every game this year, there is no objective way you can say this was the worst ref'd game we had this year.

Need that one bad. Don’t let a loss snowball. I don’t think we will.
If the amount of fight we saw to finish out this game tells me anything, they'll come back swinging. We just need to steal one back at Purdue. Might was well practice that by pummeling everyone else along the way in anger.

It's puzzling that the conference ADs don't force better, more consistent officiating across the board. How long does the B1G have to suffer incompetence? Every team gets totally hosed at some point and the resulting style of league play does no favors to our teams in the tourney. It's unacceptable.
Agreed No way either team can play that way in NCAA tournament.

Fantastic game and what an effort by the guys. Underwood should have some fine Belgian beverages and chocolate m BBV should get some refreshing Belgian beverages sent to his apartment… on January 30 when he turns 21. I loved our heart, hustle, and clutch shooting until the last few FTs.

To weigh in on the key debate:
“Blame it on the officials”? Or
“Can’t blame it on the officials”?

Losses are never just about one thing. In this game there were 4-5 really big calls that went against us. The two most obvious:
- Kofi’s 3rd foul
- Edey mauls BBV, no foul

Those are probably a 3-5 point swing, which in an OT game clearly have an impact. So, sure, you CAN blame the officials in part — although I’m sure neither Underwood nor the team will, since that’s the part over which they have almost zero control.

There were many, many other things we could have done:
- Plummer loses his man for the back-door layup in OT2
- Didn’t adapt well to Edey’s size until into the 2nd half
- Also slow to get the offensive boards up and running. Did we have any 2nd chance points the first half?

I’ll wrap it up with my first point though — great game that has me excited for the rest of the season (especially February 10). Too bad some calls didn’t go our way, but we still had every opportunity to come out with a huge win.
- Kofi will learn from a down game (he always does)
- BBV will get a huge confidence boost (I mean, the dude guards Kofi in practice, it had to translate to a game eventually)
- Plummer knows he can still set the nets on fire
- Curbelo’s back in the mix and looked mostly good — maybe a bit out of control at times, especially that throw away on the loose ball rebound, but his best real game of the year by far.

Go Illini
That ball was tipped by a Purdue player that’s why it went out of bounds bad missed call by refs again

I never complain about the refs, but we were on the wrong end not some bad calls. Kofi's third foul especially.

Most importantly, another flagrant that kills our momentum and enables the long run. We are so much better with Belo, but we can't fall into the trap of watching him dribble around.

BU needs to watch Kofi closer...after his 2nd foul I knew the 3rd was coming...he was very frustrated today..very bad body language. I will say I enjoy the mad Kofi.
There's a fine line between mad Kofi and frustrated Kofi. We've seen the latter against Purdue and Arizona.

I'm worried more about the pregame BM drinkers than I am our team.....wonder when they switched to beer?

Agreed Kofi was very frustrated by the calls and plays. He definitely needed to be taken out after the 3rd early in the 2nd half

Agreed. Kofi absolutely has to improve his reaction to this type of game.

That said....again I really hate sounding like that ref complaining fan....but Kofi was punished for his physicality...while Edey was rewarded. Some of that is absolutely on him...but not all of it.

Kofi out with his 4th fouls with 17+ remaining in the second.

We were still the better team in the second half. Without Kofi. Silver lining.

Curbelo is not just back.....he's baaaaaack!

Kind of get a kick out of all the complaining on ref calls. I would bet my life that none of those posts come from anyone who has ever refereed a B1G game between two teams of this ilk. Of course, there never has been a game like this between two teams with this much size, speed, and quickness. It is extremely difficult.

I will say this, you will never see a game where every call is correct, and likely, 99% of us will never understand what the correct calls are. I sure don't, and I have played organized hoops for 35 years, been trained in correct officiating, and even called a few games. I had a friend who was an official and called games in the MVC and B1G for decades. First of all, they all take pride in making the correct call. Secondly, some calls have to be interpreted by what is seen and they can NEVER be seen from all angles by anyone. Finally, timing is critical. They know they miss things....and they know they are affected by crowd noise and momentum. Bottom line, they always make calls in real time by what they see. Replay has helped them get things right in some cases, but will not, at this time, and maybe never, allow that in real time. The only problem I ever have with officials are those who like the spotlight....and those are less and less prevalent as review and renew committees are weeding them out. It is a thankless job, but overall, is filled by a pretty admirable bunch of people.
