The program is in a much better spot than it was two years ago when they got Walters to accept it. I guess the question is do we think BB got lucky by having the good fortune to hire Walters, or does he have the skill set to identify talented coaches and help them develop.

If it's the second, we've got nothing to worry about. If it's the first, we've got even bigger problems...

My son, who is a.Purdue alum, pointed out that this is our own damn fault. We pound Wisconsin to get Chryst fired, they then dump Leohnard, hire Fickell, Cincinnati hires Satterfield, Louisville hires Brohm, and Purdue hires Walters.

Therefore beating Wisconsin cost us Walters.
I'd do it all over again, too.

Thank you for all you did for us, Walters. Now go tank Purdue's program over the next 4-5 years. Thanks.

Disdain for other B1G programs trumps any allegiance to successful coordinators at Illinois. Go Illini!

Yeah, I sort of want Purdue to head back to the basement days we shared with them so often.

And at the same time I hope RW finds success.

I know those aren’t mutual but, what can I say, I’m a complicated person. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Here's my summary based on everything that has been posted. For the most part everyone is in agreement with:
1. Good for Ryan and congratulations
2. A HC opportunity in the Big Ten or SEC is huge
3. I don't know what would be a better immediate opportunity than Purdue
4. I am shocked that Purdue made this decision
5. I wish he stayed at Illinois one more year
6. I doubt he is ready for this HC position right now (nothing about him specifically, just based on history)
7. This is a good thing for Illinois football in general
- I trust Bielema will make a good replacement decision
- This attracts more bright young coaches to desire working at Illinois
- Whether you like Lunney or not, his day will come as well

I'm not comparing Bielema/Illinois to Alabama/Saban, but wouldn't that be fun to do (even if a stretch) in the coming years?
Happy for the man, not happy where he landed. Best of luck Coach.

I love logical analyses. I'm down with this theory

Wasn't Lovie serving as interim DC (as well as head coach) when he was fired at Illinois?

If so, that means our last two Defensive Coordinators have now been hired as head football coaches ----- (1) Lovie by the Texans, and (2) RW by the Boilers!

This made me chuckle.

Lovie to himself in the mirror: You only get to be DC until Miles asks for the job.

Shocked......Purdue boards not really overjoyed.....Can't see Ryan is a step up or even to Brohm.....Gonna be a long season...Purdue lost some good commits already.
As I stated yesterday, Purdue's fan and football identity is offense. They haven't hired a defense first head coach since Leon Burtnett in 1982.

Yeah I thought that too - mentioned it to my cousin's husband, a double Purdue alumni. He said "We're gonna take Ryan Walters and close the circle". That was last week after we all went to the championship game together. I was nervous hearing him say that, but not surprised it's come to pass.

Yeah, their message board reaction is surprising, too. Maybe it is just because we are so familiar with what an AMAZING turnaround job he did with this defense compared to Lovie, but they should be a bit more thankful! Lol.
Hopefully he does a great job at Purdue and wins a lot of games. I have feeling our message board would also be interesting if we hired a coordinator we didn’t know much about. Sucks to lose him, but I’m sure most of us are happy for him and we should be proud that another program wanted an illini coach. We’re moving up in the world.

Since the twelve team CFP is happening much sooner rather than much later, was really hoping both RW and BL would have stuck around for the inaugural year of it before either or both moved on. But, alas, not to be.

I don't get all the angst about Walters leaving. It's not like Walters was considered a defensive savant when Bielema hired him. How many people cheered when they heard that Walters was the new DC at Illinois? I knew Mizzou fans that cheered when he was hired at Illinois. If Bielema is as good as people think, he will hire a quality DC and things will keep going forward. He shouldn't have any problem hiring new assistants, he just has to make the right choices. I wish he would hire Willie Taggert and turn him loose as a recruiter, but Saban will probably hire him and rehab his rep.

2 head coaches in a row at Purdue that were former Illinois assistants.
Honestly, I didn't realize Brohm was the Brohm that coached for us....weird. I usually pick up on those things. I thought for sure I was going to quote your post and suggest it was a different Brohm. Ha.

Big congratz to coach Walters! I was hoping we wouldn't face him in the B1G and the move to Purdue was a surprise, but maybe it shouldn't have been. I wish him all the luck in the world and I hope we beat him every time we meet. =)

Very happy to Coach Walters! But on the same note, I'm just mad because everytime we have something good going it blows up. I really really really hope everyone's thoughts on this being a competent coaching staff are true and that we pull in a great DC. Just don't want to revert to the mean.
Well, you really have two choices at coordinator. You either have a meh to bad coordinator that nobody wants or you have a guru that sure as hell gets poached. I think Coach B starts up something like Alabama's coaching university and we just start reloading. In B we trust! I'm more worried about Coach B dropping some weight and getting healthy so we don't have a Kill/Leach situation on our hands, but that's just real life. I need to lose some weight too Coach B! Let's do it together. =) Speaking of which... it's time to head to the gym. Peace out.

Can’t blame them. A school with a tradition of offense hires a young DC who has never been a HC. And his DC jobs weren’t at exactly traditional football powerhouses. I think Illini fans would have had the same kind of reaction if Whitman had made the same kind of hire instead of BB.
