MONTREAL – The Blues still can’t get this road thing down. A .500 team away from home most of the season, the Blues were on the verge of making it two straight and four of their last five on the road.
But some late dramatics by Cole Caufield led the lowly Montreal Canadiens to a 3-2 overtime win, leaving the Blues dazed and confused.
Caufield tied the game with just 8.7 seconds remaining in regulation, then scored the game-winner at the 2:22 mark of overtime at Bell Centre. He thus became only the fifth player in NHL history to score a game-tying goal in the final 10 seconds of regulation and then score the game winner in OT.
The Blues won’t be sending him a congratulations card.

“We got a point and move on,” coach Craig Berube said. “We gotta be better. Each individual on the team has to be accountable for his play. We need more guys in my opinion that have to play better. We have some guys that are aloof out there right now. Aloof with the puck and just a little bit casual. We need everybody on board to do the right things and play the right way.”

The Blues played a crappy game , against a crappy team and lost a valuable point that could decide who they play in the first round of the Playoffs.....

When, where: 6 p.m. Saturday, Scotiabank Arena

TV, radio: BSM, WXOS (101.1 FM)

About the Maple Leafs: Toronto is 18-4-1 at home this season and hasn’t lost at Scotiabank since Dec. 9 against Tampa Bay. This will be the Leafs’ second game with seating capacity increased to 50 percent (roughly 10,000) as COVID protocols are relaxed in the province of Ontario. At 32-12-3, Toronto is one of three heavyweights in the Atlantic, chasing Florida and Tampa Bay for the division lead.
The Maple Leafs rank among the NHL’s top six in scoring (fourth, 3.60 goals per game), defense (fifth, 2.66 goals allowed), power play (first, 31.8 percent) and penalty kill (sixth, 84.4 percent). Their power play has been especially hot lately, scoring on 11 of their last 25 opportunities (44 percent). They’re also the league’s top faceoff team, with a 56.0 percent success rate. Auston Matthews has 33 goals, which was tied for second in the league entering the weekend. Mitchell Marner has 11 goals and 13 assists in his last 12 games.

February was supposed to be a feast, remember?
Between the Blues’ return last week from their final pause before the postseason push and this month’s finale against the flailing Blackhawks, coach Craig Berube’s team, as of Friday’s standings, will have played seven of their eight games in the month against opponents that are ranked sixth or lower in their respective divisions.
Four games in, the Blues are guilty of falling asleep during the first course.
Their elbow has slipped from the table. Their head has drooped toward the plate. If they don’t snap out of it soon, they could wind up with egg on their face.

Maybe losing to lowly New Jersey on the night of Berube’s contract extension celebration can be attributed to hints of rust that collected during that odd 10-day stretch without a game.
That appeared to be the case when the Blues did what good teams are supposed to do — win without much trouble — against the bumbling Blackhawks at home, and again on the road against the sinking Senators.

TORONTO — Go figure. Two days after losing to the NHL’s worst team in overtime, the Blues beat one of its best. And they did it with one hand tied behind their back.
Or one 18-goal scorer. With Vladimir Tarasenko out of the lineup because of an unspecified injury, the Blues improved to 2-0-1 on this trip with a 6-3 victory over Toronto.
Pavel Buchnevich scored twice — the second an empty-netter — pulling into a three-way tie with Tarasenko and Jordan Kyrou for the team goal-scoring lead, at 18.
Brayden Schenn scored his 100th goal as member of the Blues, and continues to be the team’s points leader in the New Year, with 17 (10 goals, seven assists) since the calendar flipped to 2022.

All four lines chipped in with at least a goal, only the fifth time that’s happened all season but the second time in the last four games.

An all around great game by the Blues in all facets of the game ........................

PHILADELPHIA — It was a night for sweet nostalgia. Brayden Schenn returning to the place where he established himself in the NHL.
Craig Berube back in his adopted hometown, where both his playing and coaching careers began.
And most of all, beleaguered Jordan Binnington back in goal, playing at Wells Fargo Center for the first time since Jan. 7, 2019 — the night he made his magical first NHL start with a shutout victory.
These things don’t always have happy endings. But they did Tuesday. With Binnington getting his first victory since Jan. 9, the Blues topped the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1, thus completing their four-game road trip with a 3-0-1 record and boosting their record to 30-14-6.

Binnington had 25 saves in that game three years ago — a 3-0 Blues win. He didn’t get the shutout this time, but once again he had 25 saves. He was humble, happy — and by his standards — emotional after a tight, intense game Tuesday that featured a pair of empty-net goals by St. Louis in the final 52.8 seconds that padded out the final score.
And if you don’t think he had memories flooding back to him after the game, well, you don’t have blood running through your veins.
“Yeah. Coming out and seeing my dad and stepmom after the game, just around the corner here,” Binnington said, referring to that first start. “Kind of a similar style game, yeah.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blues played hard on the forecheck the whole game and could have easily had 2-3 more goals if they had shot more , but they overpassed on numerous occasions...............................John K. and Panger bought brought that up many times last night ..........................

Here are the highlights from our weekly chat with Post-Dispatch readers.
Q: Following Jordan Binnington's performance Tuesday, how would you see the goalie share going forward?
A: It's too soon to commit to a 50-50 split, or to lean back toward Binnington yet. If he does well against Buffalo on Friday, then you can start to think about that. Their play will dictate their use, and I think whoever has the hot hand will get the nod, with Binnington getting the benefit of the doubt if they're playing comparably.
If Binnington plays against Buffalo and does well, do you bring him back against Chicago on Sunday? Or do they look at that game as a chance to get Ville Husso in the lineup? In the old days, Binnington would have played all of these, but the team's stated goal has been to get Binnington through this slump and start playing him again regularly. Philadelphia was step one, but there needs to be a step two and step three before we're back to how it used to be. If Binnington gets through this, it's his job and Husso will go back to playing as much as he used to. Maybe a little more. But if Binnington is on his game, I think it will be a 70-30, 60-40 split, in Binnington's favor.

Blues lead the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 after 1..........................

As my friend noted above , Kyrou with 2 goals , one a wicked wrister on a pass that somehow hit his stick and the other one was a great deflection off a Justin Faulk shot from the blue line.....

A penalty filled first period with 5 penalties called , 3 on the Blues.....................Ville Husso back in goal and he had some goal crease scrums but only allowed the one goal .......

Blues lead 3-2 after 2.............

A lackluster period by the Blues was enhanced after 19:25 by a short handed goal......oops , not true ......lol......an even strength goal by
defenseman Jake Walman after a good surge to the net by Saad......

I thought the Blues were outplayed by the Sabres most of the period and Husso saved them from trailing with 2 great save's on Thompson in one sequence......It just seemed the Blues were just a little late on their passes and the Sabres swarmed the Blues net........
