Wow! Cards pull out what perhaps could almost be considered a "must" win. Maybe their bad patch is over, and they can find additional success in Cincinnati.

Big time win! Kudos to Carlos Martinez and the guys out of the pen for keeping them at 3 runs, keeping the team in the game. Lets take care of business against Cincinnati and Milwaukee these next 7 and start nailing down the coffin that is the NL Central.

The benefit of being in the lead - the Pirates take two out of three and gain but one game, the Cubs take two out of three and gain but one game. Meanwhile the season begins to get very short.

Not "must win", but it does feel much better than a loss. The Pirates got within 2.5 I believe late July (?), and then the lead grew right back. I hope the Cards do what they are supposed to do the next 7, like win 5 or so.

You are correct. Pirates got within 2.5 games of Cards right before the All-Star break, after which St. Louis pulled ahead again. But I also remember at the end of last year when the Bucs got within 1.0 game of St. Louis with three games to go. Cards held on and ended up finishing 2 games ahead, but that experience makes me a little nervous any time they start getting a little close.

Hey, I am always nervous. Until things are locked up, I worry. I just have a little faith. The magic number is 20. Hopefully it it down to single digits by next Sunday.

Cards MUST take 3 of 4 in Cincy. We have to get the ball rolling, and hold on. I'm still nervous, but I think our rough stretch is over.

I'm very nervousness. I have felt like we are not as good as our record for most of this season. We just don't have the offensive power that we need to feel good about the post season. Chicago and Pittsburg can put up some runs.

Me, too. Cards' hitting has been way too spotty. And now their pitching is getting shakey. But, given that their pitching has been pretty good until lately, and with some of their hitters coming back, still optimistic that they can win the division.

I am hoping that the pitching woes are simply too much time off and the next start will be much more in line with the season norms.

This is a must win. I don't give a !!!! if we're ahead by 4.5 games, we have to win this. We need to get the bats going, pitching needs to start going deep, and we need to show urgency. Seems like they care, but don't care at the same time. Just going through the motions. Man, oh man, I am scared of this stretch run

No game is must win until it's an elimination game.

Cody Stanley, who had been the 3rd catcher for the Cardinals after the rosters expanded on September 1st, has been suspended for 80 days for testing positive for a PED: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/1...ardinals-suspended-80-games-positive-ped-test

The PED he tested positive for is called dehydrochlormethyltestosterone, also known as Oral Turinabol, and is an anabolic steroid. This is the same type of steroid that the old East German Olympic teams were administered.

Strikeouts, strikeouts, strikeouts! Quit striking out. We will be fine, but this getting a little too close.

Having Moss and Reynolds as our 4 and 5 killed us today. Those K's in the 1st absolutely killed us. Get at least 2 there, and I think it would have been a different outcome today.

This would be my lineup until Grichuk, Holliday, and Wong come back:
Marp-3rd
Piscotty-LF
Peralta-SS
Heyward-RF
Yadi-C
Reynolds/Moss-1st
Pham-CF
Garcia-2nd
Pitcher

I'm baaaaaaaaack :) looks like we have a new poster here, happy to have another Redbirds fan on this forum! Welcome, chris.

Hope they get out of this funk today, and carry some momentum into the next series for a sweep, God knows we need it

I thought for sure with the opponents we had scheduled last weekend through middle to end of September and Pittsburghs schedule, that there would be a 1 game maybe 2 game separation right now between us. But I am extremely happy we have pushed it out. I was afraid we wouldn't be able to keep division lead, now I can't see us loosing it. I hope this keeps up.

And now I see the opposite of what I said. What a roller coaster this last couple weeks have been.

It's all about getting timely hits in the playoffs. You don't need an explosive offense. What you absolutely must have is a great pitching staff though. I hope ours holds up.
