BREAKING: Cardinals have agreed to acquire Nolan Arenado from Rockies, sources tell
@TheAthletic. Deal pending approval from both MLB and players’ union; Rockies sending Cardinals significant cash, believed to be in $50M range, and Arenado will be deferring money.

Names possibly going to Rockies include LHP Austin Gomber, 1B Luken Baker, OF Jhon Torres. Return also might include RHP Jake Woodford or RHP Angel Rondón. Exact package not confirmed.

Deal unlikely to be official tonight and maybe even not this weekend. Arenado will need to formally waive his no-trade clause and his opt-out after 2021 also must be addressed. Approvals from MLB and union necessary as well, as reported in initial tweet.

"The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired third baseman Nolan Arenado in a trade with the Colorado Rockies, sources confirmed to ESPN's Jeff Passan on Friday.

The Rockies are getting multiple players in the deal and will send upward of $50 million to St. Louis, sources said.

The news was first reported by The Athletic.

Arenado, 29, is scheduled to make $35 million in 2021 as part of a $260 million, eight-year contract he signed with the Rockies in 2019. The deal includes an opt-out clause after the '21 season."

If the players named are correct, Torres would be the highest rated player we give up at no. 9 in our system.

The more I'm hearing about this deal, the more it just looks like an absolute home run. Arenado for essentially 6 yrs $150 million, and not giving up any top prospects? Yes please!

While I am in favor of the deal, there are a lot of unknowns to consider as well.
It is possible that Nolan will be with St L for only 1 or 2 years.
It is possible that the combined career results for the players St Lou trades out perform Nolan.
Like so many hitters, his career splits away from Coors Field are much lower than at home.
If he walks, I wonder if the Cardinals will still get the full $50 mil from Colorado.
If he is ready next year does Nolan Carlson slide over to 2B?

He will have to compete with Dylan Gorman at 2nd. On a more serious note, if Arenado doesn’t exercise opt outs in 21 or 22, and Nolan Gorman’s bat plays we have several spots he might fill or he’d be trade bait.

1 or 2 years means he was very good, thinking he can get a better contract.
None of the projected trade candidates are considered lock to even be starters, let alone all stars.
True, but his numbers in the NL central are very good. Remember, LA, SD not good hitters parks.
Not disclosed yet, I would guess no, but, if we get some relief for the next 2 years, it wouldn't hurt.
Don't know Nolan Carlson.

It's a typo. I meant to say Nolan Gorman. I got distracted while typing it. My bad.

Regarding Gorman, I am expecting the DH to be in the NL within 2 years. I could be very wrong about that, hope I am. I still appreciate the additional strategy involved with a pitcher listed in the batting order.
