One additional thing to add to the story that pru C&Ped about Cardinals TV...

KMOX's Tom Ackerman will call play by play for 8 games this season as a fill-in announcer, beginning with the series against Detroit in early May. Bally Sports Midwest is doing this so that way a fill-in can be used if ever needed and a situation like what happened with Danny Mac ever comes up in the future.

Can Jordan Walker possibly be this good already?​


The first indication that Jordan Walker might be different -- in terms of a brimming confidence, an advanced maturity and a high baseball IQ -- came during a low-profile meeting between the Cardinals and the then-17-year-old prodigy in December 2019.

Walker, a somewhat gawky teen at the time with his long limbs, bushy hair and toothy smile, was already very much on the club’s radar in the months leading up to the 2020 MLB Draft because of the massive potential stored inside his wide-shouldered, 6-foot-5, 220-pound frame.

Walker seemed almost too good to be true with his 3.98 GPA, a scholarship offer to Duke University, a massive and athletic frame, a megawatt smile and a deep love of baseball. Deeply intrigued, Cardinals brass had to see it for themselves.

I think there's a decent chance Carlson sits against righties. His splits against RHP are terrible and he basically became a platoon against lefties guy by the end of last season. Would make sense too because then you could have TON, Noot, Walker in the OF against righties with Gorman as the DH, and against lefties sit Gorman, slide Walker to DH, and play Carlson in CF or RF.

Seems Reasonable. I hadn’t checked the board today but raced over when I saw the news (late). I’m still excited he’ll be on the team.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Before he delivered the welcome to St. Louis and continued Jordan Walker’s radiant ascent as the Cardinals’ top prospect in a generation, manager Oliver Marmol first had a question.
In the manager’s office at Roger Dean Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with Walker sitting across from him and bench coach Joe McEwing nearby, Marmol asked the 20-year-old outfielder for what he thought was his “best tool.”
“He said, ‘I don’t think about things very long, good or bad; I just kind of move on to the next thing, and that’s what’s helped me,’” Marmol recited. “It just confirmed why he’s ready.”
Walker will want to remember what happened next for a long time.

Marmol told Walker that he will be on the opening day roster when the Cardinals begin the season Thursday at Busch Stadium against Toronto. Likely to be in the starting lineup at one of the corner outfield spots, Walker leapfrogs from Class AA to the majors. Ahead of his 21st birthday on May 22, Walker will be the youngest Cardinal to make his major-league debut since Rick Ankiel snapped a curveball at age 20 in 1999.

It's a little different philosophy than we have seen from teams in the past where they held players back for the sake of delaying their service time clock. I like this. If they can help in May/June, they can help in March as well. Those 30-40 games that they miss out on may well be the difference between making it to the post season or not.

The Cardinals tend to try and buy out the last few years of rookie contracts for franchise players anyway. Starting the clock early just shows the player that they are going to be fair with them and hopefully they will be fair in return when that first contract negotiation happens. So basically, the opposite of what has happened with Corbin Burnes and the Brewers.

So happy to see Walker with the big club. There are some ifs, but if he performs and we get a bounce back with TON, this lineup is loonnngggg!

I think having Walker coming up and even Winn also was a major reason why the Cardinals didn't go all in on Soto.......Plus , of course the ridiculous cost of pursing him to the prospects being developed.........

Walker is the best prospect coming to the majors since Albert Pujols........I sure hope he gets off to a fast start and produces enough to stay on the big league roster.......jmho

The new CBA changed the line of thought with certain perks such as an extra # 1 draft pick if a player like Walker wins the rookie of the year award.......I think that is true , but i haven't researched it this morning ....going off memory as I have a migraine headache this morning......time to med up.......it really really is...............

I've read conflicting reports on whether he would need to win or if a top-3 finish is enough, but yes by having him open the season with the club there is the chance at draft pick compensation after the first round.

  • Players who finish in the top two of Rookie of the Year voting will receive a full year of service time. This is designed to combat service time manipulation (keeping a player in the minors to start the season in order to gain an additional year of team control).
  • Teams will also be incentivized to promote top prospects to the majors. If a prospect who was on the Opening Day roster finishes in the top three of Rookie of the Year voting or top five of MVP/Cy Young voting, their team will receive an additional draft pick.

I agree the CBA has a huge impact. I wasn't trying to say the Cards organization is better than other franchises. While I was thinking how the CBA has changed, I didn't include that in my post.
Hope you are feeling better. Migraines are a bear.

It's an interesting site. I added it to my favs list. There is a lot of content behind a paywall but enough free content for me to wonder over every once in a while.
