Report also states team is going to drop payroll just like Sonny Gray story earlier. If this is true fans really won't show up next year. And DeWallet will truly show he only cares about revenue.

This plus, Oli and Moz sticking around and the birds might not draw 2 million fans next year. (is
that the kind of revenue he's after?) if they cant afford this franchise they should get out. My guess
is they can make a pretty penny in the sale.

Skip might not want this job, its a sinking ship. we're about to be the Pirates franchise. the Sonny
Grey rumor is confirmation that it was a bad signing to begin with. Nobody on the outside thought
he was a #1 starter and without a #2 or #3 but instead a group of #5's in Lynn, Gibson, Mikolas, etc.

Now were going to give Moz a chance to fix what he's broken. (seems familiar doesn't it?) We might
be going the direction of the White Sox sitting and hoping for a sale.

Chaim Bloom to take over Mozeliak's role as President of Baseball Operations starting in 2026. Mozeliak will make day-to-day decisions through next year but long-term decisions will involve Bloom and ownership. Girsch is no longer the GM with his title now changed to VP of special projects. Mozeliak also says he expects player payroll to go down as well.

Not thrilled about dropping payroll and don't trust the front office, BUT I have very slight hope they can cut payroll and actually be at the same level if not better than this season(not saying that is good). I say slight hope......possible ways to drop $ quick and reinvest.

Drop $26M from Goldy

Pay Kyle Gibson $1M buyout and not pickup option

Pay Lance Lynn $1M buyout and not pickup option

Those are the minimum moves to drop a ton of money quick. Continue that transition period until we get crap contracts of Mikolas and Matz of around $30M off the books after next season(barring a miracle quicker). More of a continual phase than transition when the pitching staff is full of #4-5 aging pitchers.

I'll keep track of the birds since i have my whole life, but i refuse to purchase a STL ticket
with this front office in shambles. (I might see the birds in a visitors ballpark i haven't been
before or a close weekend trip.) I understand that could be a long time. A year of lame
duck Moz will turn into a new VP Bloom and few, if any, other changes next year. I believe
that is the owners way to keep his "guys" around. The comment earlier in the year about
"if the fans don't show up, we'll be forced to reduce payroll" chapped my !!!. This organization
is on him, not the fans. Building a minor league takes a minimum of 3-4 years. Infrastructure,
Drafting, Instruction, Trades to bring in youth, is not going to happen overnight. Bloom has
not been through that, he had Red Sox money to throw around.

If you let Paul, Kyle and Lance go, that;s over $50 million of which you can try to deal Mikolas and Matz and Arenado, thereby dumping anothe $50 or so million. Add Gray and that's another $30 million.

Sonny Gray Trade I guess, if they are really going the cheap route.
Erick Fedde Keep at least until trade deadline.
Ryan Fernandez Keep
Kyle Gibson Keep, fairly cheap innings eater. Or let go to have $$$ for paying down trade of others.
Ryan Helsley Keep until trade deadline, then package for a haul if still light's out.
John King One of 3 or 4 relievers to try and keep.

I haven't followed closely enough to be able to assess your thoughts here, but something has to change. My question, I used to be a believer in the minor league system with their "Cardinal Way". It appears to have dropped off significantly in the past 5-7 years. Is it worth getting a bunch of prospects when the development of those prospects has become more of a crap shoot? Is Bloom really going to make that big of a change? If he is "all that", I am fine with a complete rebuild. I just don't want the $1,000,000 house to be built on sand.

The farm system has been gutted to mortgage all of these "just one more piece" moves over the last several years to keep the Cardinals in the hunt for the last wild card spot. Many of us warned about this for the better part of a decade.

I have to agree with you. As I read jmwillini's post I realized I don't really know much about the 2024 team.
It does seem that Mo & Co has frequently traded MLB players for prospects that didn't pan out as expected.
I won't have an issue if they let Goldie walk. At 36, he may want to play for another couple of years. If he can get $10-15 mil per, I don't blame him for trying. Which brings me to the question, he played for StL for 6 seasons. would that be enough to get him into the Cardinals' Hall? His slash line is good but not outstanding. .278/.360/.483 with a pretty good OPS of .843. His WAR is a respectable 22.9 but he was paid $144 million for that production. An MVP and GG help but don't make him a slam dunk either.

Before posting this I went and looked at other hitters that were voted in by the fans. Herr, Holliday, Rolen and Torre have similar comps, more or less. I guess that means Paul will probably make the Cardinal Hall some day.

I guess my concern is when we hear about the top prospects for a couple of years, in days past, when they came up, they performed better (could be revisionist history).

Cub fan, but read this and the Sox thread because they are MLB. I think that I have only commented one time, which was to remind someone that the Cards won it all when they finished only a couple of games over .500. I feel safe to comment now because both teams were the same level of mediocre this season.

I would much rather the Cubs had spent a ton of money and were feeling pressure to win the WS than have them spend a little more than the average team and watch to see if they could grab the last wildcard spot. Dodger and Yankee fans are watching their teams play ball. We are also watching their teams play ball. Maybe the article said the same thing, I don't subscribe to StLtoday

Maybe next season one of our teams will clinch the division in game 162, over the other which is the top wildcard. Meet in the NLCS, one wins the WS. That's exciting baseball!
