My wife and I took in the game yesterday.
Yadi Bobblehead night. Along with the Cardinals Hall of Fame for Yadi, Pujols and a player I knew very little about, Bill Sherdel. I thought I study every Cardinal great when I was a kid.
Gates opened at 3:15. We were in a huge line at 2. Boy was it hot.
Bill Sherdel is winningest left hand pitcher for St Louis.153 wins. He had a couple of years with the Boston Braves but played with the Cards from 1918 to 1932.
I don't know if anyone saw it. Yadi had the Cardinal trainer put eye black patches on him before he spoke. He also put a Cardinals cap on backwards. Nice gesture.
The crowd cheered "YADI" a couple of times but there was no corresponding "AL-BERT" for Pujols. The crowd showed Yadi its appreciation when it was mentioned he played all 19 seasons in St Louis.
The ceremony went so long, thanks to Yadi's very long induction speech, the start of the game was delayed.
No sense recapping the game. It was typical of this season. The Cardinals teased us a few times that they would pull it off then the bullpen laid an egg.
One final note. I bought tickets to sit in the Coca Cola Unlimited section. 272 and 271. (Big Mac Land). We had a little bit of a walk to get to our kiosk but we had unlimited brats, hot dogs, Coke products, nachos, ice cream as some other things. We could only take 3 items at a time. But for $70 it was a pretty good deal. I bought the tickets early enough we had the front row. After my wife's cancer/chemo bout she struggles walking very far. Climbing the steps would have been a nightmare and she was overheated waiting for the gates to open then walking to our section. It was a mistake on my part to assume she would be strong enough. Before the ceremony we were sitting at the top of our section. I walked down to make sure no one had taken our seats then I came back and asked the two young men in front of us if they wanted to trade seats. After explaining why they agreed. I walked back down with them so they knew it was legit. One Sox fan. One Cardinal fan. I went back down after the game started to make sure they were still ok with it. I slipped them a little cash as well telling them they don't have to keep it they can give it away if they want. I said there was no way my wife would have been able to enjoy the game with he heat and the stairs. Nice kids.
