Hope for the best with all parties involved.
Last time we’ve probably seen TSJ in an Illini uniform.

I have a law degree from a top 20 law school and 40 years of actual experience as a lawyer, and TSJ wouldn't want me anywhere near his case (unless it’s for the prosecution). I do commercial and real estate law. Whitman has never practiced to my knowledge. So, while JW might have some understanding of the process, I doubt he has any great feel for what TSJ is facing, the process, or the prospects for a early resolution except for what he is being told by criminal lawyers. A law degree has very little to do with the actual practice of law.

Edit - not sharing to dismiss your own points and experience as a lawyer, more to indicate JW’s background and whether that would be a benefit for the dept. in this situation (which I’d argue at the very least doesn’t hurt)

Unfortunately, guilty or not guilty, this could end badly for TSJ. If he's found guilty, obviously that's the worst outcome for him. But even if he's found innocent, too many people will say he got off because he's a star athlete. Unless his defense team has solid evidence of innocence like that in the Duke Lacrosse case, this could end badly all the way around for him. If he did it, I feel badly for the accuser. If he was falsely accused, where does he go to get his reputation back?

Overall I think this thread has been pretty reasonable considering the circumstances (some exceptions, sure) but regardless of what comes out, I hope we chill on using any time gap between an alleged incident and reporting said alleged incident to mean literally anything.
Bolded should be standard operating procedure

Since news broke this afternoon, I have been reading everyone's posts and trying to put together my thoughts. It is horrible news but I think the easiest thing is to sum it up. So here goes.

Terrence has been accused of a horrible crime. None of us, except for Terrence and the girl, know what really happened. There are only two possibilities, each with their own consequences:

1. Terrence IS guilty of raping the girl. If so, then the legal process will play out over 8-10 months and he will be punished for his actions. Because of how long it will take, his college basketball career is over, he will not be named in All American, a Big 10 first-teamer, or leading the Illini to a good postseason tournament run. He also won't be drafted in the NBA draft this summer and be able to earn millions of dollars in the league. And if he's guilty, he deserves all of that.

2. Terrence is NOT guilty of raping the girl. If so, then the legal process will play out over 8-10 months and he will be exonerated. Because of how long it will take, his college basketball career is over, he will not be named an All-American, a Big 10 first-teamer, or leading the Illini to a good postseason tournament run. He also won't be drafted in the NBA draft this summer and be able to earn millions of dollars in the league. IF he is not guilty, that is a horrible thing to have happen to him and I feel terrible for him.

Both alternatives make me sick, so there is no good outcome. Because of everything he has done for the team, my natural leaning is to believe alternative #2. But that makes me sick because it is so unfair for Terrence.

Just like everyone else on here, I know nothing about what transpired, so I will have to wait and see how it plays out. But either way it makes me absolutely sick.

Anyone have a link to the complaint? News articles have not had it

The sad thing is, the accuser could recant her testimony tomorrow and the charges could be dropped and TSJ would still have that cloud of “did he or didn’t he” hanging over his head. The only way he gets absolved of all this is if the case plays out and evidence shows without a doubt that he’s innocent. Unfortunately, that option takes time and likely means the end of his UI career and perhaps his pro career too.

I disagree. Any forceful incident with bruising, scratching and/or injury TSJ is not coming home from Lawrence.

The Illini basketball program has had my attention and avid fan interest since the mid 50s. The Flyin' Illini and the 2005, not to mention the myriad of other high points have brought much joy to my life...of the ilk of the day my U. S. bound plane left the shores of Vietnam behind. Today, the low feeling is much the same as the day I opened the envelope containing my orders for reassignment to Vietnam.

And yet, with further reflection, nothing can express the deep empathy I have for those far more deeply affected by this situation. For the younger of our posters, it will be something you will remember vividly for the rest of your life. For the older of us, like me, the shock may never wear off. There may even be a few non-sport fans here to which it is of the ilk that an insect died after flying into their window and not given further thought.

Finally, there is a part of me that wonders why TSjr., regardless of guilt or innocence, is being made the public face of the incident, and not treated with the same rights as the accuser and kept anonymous...but that is just my wanting to understand reasons behind a law...which are often self-serving and not fully thought out as well as far from being universally applicable to every case.

The number of people declaring TSJ’s Illinois career over before hearing all the facts is … disappointing.
I think you’re missing the point here - everyone is hoping the facts and evidence point to what we are all hoping to be true. But, that will play out in the legal system and it could legitimately, not an exaggeration, take years to find that out. It won’t be resolved by February to make a run at it in March.

We all want the facts to show us what we hope. But it doesn’t matter - he is done playing college basketball

There's a third alternative. He's guilty of sexual assault but not rape, and the DA overcharged him.
