I'll be running in my new "Secondary" logo dri-fit tee tomorrow. I'm fully expecting to get booed and jeered along the way.

Can you make jerseys like you did that say Fighting Illini, but in cursive writing? I don't know if that's possible.

Bingo. Team Shield assemble.

No, just group psychology. If that logo had been presented by someone on this forum as an idea last week most on here would have ripped it as idiotic. But once it is OUR logo, then all the emotion swings in and most of the really rabid fans rally behind the team. Most on here would have supported anything Nike came up with. The same thing happens when someone buys a house. When they are looking at houses, there is a ton of criticism and doubt. But once they buy the house, most people develop an incredible emotional bond with their house, are convinced they made a great buy, and can't see the flaws.

It seems like your logic is that because the logo is flawed in your judgment, there's no way others could think it's a good logo on their own accord. We have no idea what the reaction to the shield logo would have been last week, and calling the overwhelmingly positive reaction group psychology now doesn't change that.

By the way, maybe this has been discussed already, but I don't think it has.

Re: "Fighting Illini", everyone seemed surprised that that phrase was used pretty sparingly in the overall profile. But did you notice that just "Illini" was not used anywhere in any materials or on any uniforms? I don't believe that word was spoken on its own in the entire presentation either.

Seems to me, given that virtually all of the other whispers seem to have been legitimate rumors, that what was meant by emphasizing "Fighting Illini" was in fact the elimination of just "Illini" as something that would be used in official materials.

Never thought of that. While I wish it was used more I like it on the back of all of the football helmets. I also like it on the back of the shirt that I bought!

Hard to say for sure. There have been some god awful logos that have lasted for years. It all depends upon how persistent the DIA is on pushing this and how attached fans become to something awful because "we're loyal to Illinois".

Hopefully the DIA have the sense to make a graceful exit, perhaps turn it into a shield and kind of pretend the whole 2 Fs, dangly lines = columns thing never happened.

I like the shield, but it's not because of loyalty. I thought trying to use the old shield (and Grange-era stripes) were both bad ideas (because the originals were too old-fashioned looking.) So I was ready to dislike them if they were used. But I think those features look great.

In contrast, as much as I love the chief, I really HATE the "feathers" on the basketball uniforms.

I think I understand why you don't like the shield, GHD (if I sort of squint, I can see how you see it as a beard), but to me it reads "superhero-y". And I thought that before the Nike guy ever said anything about that.

The fact that a collegiate rebrand can "legitimately upset" you is a bit weird.

I'm a bit weird. (But I also make my career working with brands, so if I didn't consider them important I wouldn't have a very fulfilling life. And—like many here—Illinois is a part of who I am. So I don't view it as just the shirts a bunch of 18-22 year olds are wearing.)

homemade two-tone? #NotAnArtist

Just a guess (not that you guys can't mock it up for fun), but I doubt we'll ever see the two-tone on anything but ILLINOIS and FIGHTING ILLINI. I'm betting that treatment is reserved only for the word marks, while the font itself will see use in other instances as well.

That's the impression I'm getting too, which I'm fine with. I was hoping to find the full alphabet in the two-tone so I could use it for a signature of my own, but in all the press releases, I only see it used for the wordmarks, while the full alphabet was only in solid orange or blue.

I love the way everybody preached consistency yet the football unis trace back to old times and the bball unis go back to the chief.

Your point being? We finally established wordmarks, a font, and standardized colors that will be used for all sports, which we were sorely lacking before. That's pretty nice consistency in my book now. No one was ever trying to say that every sport's uniforms should be identical. Let each one have their own touches.

It was mentioned, but not discussed much. I presume the FI will be on upcoming product, but given what was presumed to be a focal point, not seeing it on any of the product to date is surprising.
