Huge, huge assumption.

we might never know. But the take-away is that, in the end, we whiffed on our home-run candidates because either we weren't willing to pay the asking price or we weren't able to talk them down to ours.

or we offered the clouds and they just didn't want to move. Perhaps the gap in your timeline is actually that we improved our offer but no offer was ever good enough.

Marcy Girton graduated from Taylor University too, is it just me or does that small school pop up all the time here?

Herein lies the problem with all of these "reports."

When are we ever going to just pay up and get someone to fix this mess?

It's not rough. We have an intern AD at the moment. No rush. People are making it out to be a whole lot worse than it is. Let the process take care of all loose ends and make the right hire. It sounds like we tried every single way to get George and/or Tiley. The search committee has been tight lipped and doing the exact thing that would be expected. It is now and always has been about a common goal and a whole process to get there.

Good stuff.

I am guessing that it is taking this much time b/c the U of I "leadership" is making sure this hire brings the big time donors back into the fold. There must be some faction hesitant to select Whitman, OR a few big time donors want some more time to attempt to lure Tiley (or George, though I think his family is happy in Boulder) with a bump up in salary.

At the end of the day, I expect Whitman to be the hire. And I believe that he will prove to be successful.

When has this school EVER been known to go all out on ANYTHING related to athletics? You seem to be assuming a level of institutional competence that, to me, is not justified by anything that has happened since August. I'm not saying they're drooling idiots, but the process has been far from smooth.

Any possibility that our "leadership" is trying to check the box for inclusion of minority/gender candidates before an inevitable hiring of Whitman?

Who said anything about it being "this school". If we were going to pay what a George or a Tiley is worth, it wasn't going to be "this school" bucking up the cash.

Looks like Marcy Girton of Texas A & M is one of the previously unreported #Illini AD candidates.

OH God..please NO.

Looks like she is well educated, with two master's degrees and started a PhD program at Purdue based upon an older bio of her at TCU.

In 2015 she was mentioned as a finalist for the AD positions at Appalachian State and University of Central Florida

Also worth noting that while they are both alumni of Taylor University, it does not appear as though Girton and Groce's time at Taylor overlapped. Girton's last year as Taylor Women's basketball head coach was '89-'90 and Groce's first year as player was '90-'91.

And lastly, Girton was named as a defendant, along with University of South Carolina, the AD, and the university president in a sexual-harassment lawsuit that was brought forth by a former women's soccer player. From what I can tell, looks like the case was later dismissed.

They better not be using race and gender to determine job candidates. That would be racist and sexist.

It honestly doesn't seem like a pure diversity candidate in the case of Girton (though I did think that initially). She seems reasonably well-qualified to me. Would I say she would be my top choice? No. But I don't think we'd be screwed with her either. She does a lot with the Aggies' basketball and football programs, too. :noidea:

But which day is the question.

My biggest beef with Guenther was that he held onto mediocre coaches too long. He did hire Hambly, Small, Tiley, Self, Kruger, Hartleb. Who can you name that Thomas hired that has amounted to anything?

Moeller was the DC at Michigan. We hired him in 1977. He failed miserably and lasted only three seasons.

It is interesting that we are bringing up Moeller, I just missed the Moeller years and showed up at Illinois for the start of the Mike White Era, and didn't pay much attention until I showed up on campus. But Moeller was adequate at Michigan, terrible at Illinois and as bad as football is right now, it is still better than the era leading up to Mike White. It takes a special coach to bring a team up from the bottom.

With regards to Guenther, I remember attending an alumni affair where Guenther spoke to the blue hairs in West Palm (before I was a blue hair) and his comment was Michigan and Illinois were in similar places back when Michigan hired Bo, both had some history, but some recent troubles, Michigan stuck with Bo, while Illinois dumped the coach & began/continued some dark days/years. From this it was obvious his philosophy was you needed to give the coach an adequate chance to succeed and he wasn't a big fan of rolling the dice and starting over.
