This is in regards to Tiley and George...

Totally understand. Did hear permission was requested to go above budget which would seemingly indicate 1 of those 2

What? I guess that means Tom Michael will get $400K per year after all. :D

Giving Self more money after year one would have just been money out of pocket. He was gone no matter what. Whatever Guenther would have raised, it just would have been money wasted no matter what. ;) Cmon Man! Kansas would have snatched him up period. :thumb:

Not really. At the time Kansas was arrogant and did not think they needed to pay a coach more than $1.8 M. What was Roy making...$1.2M?

So if we had given Self $2.5 M a year (maybe even $2M?) he would have stayed. And by that I mean Self may have wanted the job but Kansas would have just moved on to the next candidate.

I think we all would have loved to keep Self and in hindsight that money would seem well worth it. I just see Guenther having a hard time getting 2 or 2.5 million approved by the board if the elites are paying 1.2 million at the time. That would require an AD that could sell the hell out of a vision. Hopefully we get one of those. I think the truth is Ron got a little butt hurt and lashed out at Self. I think some cajoling and a moderate raise might have made it real tough on Self. Not sure in the end if it would have made a difference or not.

Just a few months before he bolted to Kansas, Self had signed a new five year contract with Illinois which included at least a moderate raise. That's probably at least one of the reasons Gunther didn't believe it was proper to offer him even more money.

Self was waiting for Kansas to come calling. Otherwise he would have stayed at Illinois. He had a great situation and knew it, but he never lost sight of his true love.

Here's the list of finalists my guy gave me:

Tom Michael
Sean Frazier
Dave Heeke
Marcy Girton
Patrick Chun

He also said Tiley and Whitman were interviewed and rejected.

Announcement tomorrow.

We'll see. :D

Well, so much for the credibility of your guy. :D

And he was wrong. If RG didn't want to pay that signaled that the UI athletic program didn't feel like competing with the big boys. ECI mentality in a nutshell.

Also, the rumors flew at the time that Self gave Illinois every chance to pony up and keep him. When they didn't it also signaled how they valued him. Anyone would have left.

This is true. Around Christmas time I believe? And I believe it bumped Self from something like $800k to $1.1M. The rumors of Self leaving (not necessarily for Kansas) had been rampant for some time...and thus the bump.

However, if RG would of had the vision to bump Self to 2.0M-2.5 M at that time instead of waiting until Kansas "officially" came calling it would never have been an issue.

Many of the elites were paying $2M-$3M at the time. Kansas just was arrogant and did not feel they needed to join the "arms race" at the time and would not have pursued a coach over $2M. Of course, a few years later they changed their tune and have been that way ever since. But not at that time.

At a minimum, all we needed Self for was 1-2 more years to finish establishing the elite recruiting and we would have been set. But I feel he would still be here and we would be in a dynasty of success.

Had a listen to Tate's comments. He mentioned that George and Tiley did NOT interview and didn't believe they needed to either. All the other interviewees were never gonna be finalists in his opinion. He mentioned how George is just too tied down in Boulder and what he says makes some sense. I think we can't miss with either George or Tiley and would be thrilled to hear an announcement next week for either of these two.

So, Tate is saying it's Tiley?
