No formal conversation between Illinois and Tiley doesn't mean there hasn't been a conversation.

This.

His statement read in full simply reads like he was simply denying he was in Indy for a formal interview. Something that's been speculated here all along.

I just dont see how anyone can put a positive spin on this news. If Tiley hasn't even been stateside there's no way he's being considered except in our IL message board dreams. So what if he's been contacted informally? Where are all these big time AD's at that were ever hired via an 'informal' process. Looks like Rbachuber's source may be correct. Frankly I'm tired of, and embarrassed by, the way this whole thing is shaping up. Where's my friend Johnnie Walker at! :tsk:

Yeah, but wouldn't it be odd to come out with a sort-of-denial if he was still involved informally, or close to becoming the AD? Lots of ways to interpret the situation.

I also find it odd that the search committee would let the media run with a George or Tiley rumor. If neither of these candidates are involved wouldn't it benefit the committee to leak the fact that Tiley and George are not involved? If Tiley and George aren't involved and they let the rumors persist then they are setting themselves up for a huge disappointment / failure when someone else is announced.

They have no control over the media or what rumors they chose to discuss. And I'm guessing very few of the leaks or rumors are emanating from the search committee.

People are going to speculate and if they're disappointed with the eventual hire there's not much you can do about that. Not worth the effort, IMO.

I didn't say they have control. To think they can't leak information that is in their best interest is naive. If they don't have Tiley or George they should leak that. All Shannon Ryan would need to do is Tweet "hearing from good sources that Tiley and George are not involved" and we'd be done with this.

This actually corresponds with what Tate said that Tiley has not interviewed for the job.

Tate said that, due to him being the CEO for Australia tennins, he cannot interview for a job and lose and try to come back to that position. It would be awkward at best. That is probably why that guy tweeted that Tiley did not interview for the job, so as to protect Tiley.

What I also gathered from my quick listen to Tate is that George was option #1, but it appears that we cannot pry him away from Colorado, due to his family or whatever. Thus, Tiley is next in line. All of the other interviews were just window dressing (and to comply with regulations).

Finally, I wouldn't put any stock in anyone saying that they are committed to finishing what they started at their current position. Everyone says that right up to the point that they take another job.

Agreed. Who said that?

To what benefit? I've heard those exacts rumors several times already anyway. Do I believe them? Hard to say since I've also heard others that directly contradict that information.

"we'd be done with this" :D

Good update.

George was option #1, but it appears that we cannot pry him away from Colorado, due to his family or whatever.

Or at least we cannot pry him away with the contract we're offering. Jeremy Werner said he thought it would take $1MM for 8-10 years. That may not be accurate, but one can imagine it would take something in that ballpark. George has history at CU, Boulder is an amazing place to live, and their new football facilities are largely complete. It's a tough situation to leave no matter how much you love your alma mater. This in addition to the family situation.

I'm still holding out hope for Tiley. He's the only candidate that has built a championship program. I have great confidence that he could turn this place around.

I read it as Tiley not coming here at all. The word formal is meant to concede that some high powered alums contacted him informally. I think that is pretty clear to me that he's not coming. Not sure what Tate said to make us think otherwise.

Everyone should mentally start prepping themselves for the Tom Michael show in ECI land. I'm not impressed or any more likely to contribute if that's the case. I'll hope he does well and proves my doubt wrong.

That would be such a complete and total disaster. About what I expect from my alma mater. I hope I'm wrong, I mean how can a search take this long and end up with the most mediocre hire in history?

This has all the markings of a hat switch, and Michael is an out-of-date chapeau.
