Zero impact.

never use the word zero. Like I said yesterday, sponsors will be lost if it blows up. Sponsors lost means less money. Aussie open is the highest paying tourney in Tennis (yes, higher than Wimbledon). Less money means less money into Aussie Tennis of which he is the head. If widespread corruption, it will have an affect on tennis as a whole and everything connected to it.

I think what he means is that the hire would not be tainted.

Additionally, no Aussies made it to the quarters in men’s and women’s singles (though none were really expected to).

Tennis Australia promotes tennis within Australia and hosts tournaments (both national and international). It has little bearing on whether Australians are good enough to make it to the quarters or beyond. The only real impact it would have would be in encouraging more kids to take up the sport and encouraging more support nationwide for them so that eventually one will be really good.

Catching up on the AD talk. So nothing really new in all of this time. But I do want to know...doe ANY of the people who talk about Kahn and his money supporting one person or the other, actually KNOW for a fact that he is involved at all at this point? Or is it just wishful thinking?

I mean...is he your next door neighbor?

Man, we are gonna be so mad next Thursday when we still don't have an AD, and Tiley has publicly said he's not taking it.

FWIW, I hear we're in final negotiations, and it's not George, Tiley, or Phillips

So it's Whitman? I can then stay asleep on Illinois athletics since the focus will be back on being the biggest thing in ECI.

Whitman is not George or Tiley, but he's fine.

Michael.... would be VERY unhappy.

I agree that Whitman is far far better choice than Michael. And I guess he'd be "fine".

I hardly think "fine" is what is needed to fix this dumpster fire though. "Fine" would be managing a status quo where status quo is a good spot.

I don't think he'd be fine, at least not yet. 1) He'd be learning the D-I ropes on the job. I get he was in our administration before but it's different when you're the guy. And he'd be learning the ropes while trying to fix the dumpster fire that is basketball and football. 2) Did I mention he was previously in our administration.. under Guenther. Enough is enough. There has to be a clean break from this lineage once and for all.

Look if Whitman can work his way up to a D-I school and prove he can competently run a big program then ok maybe UI looks at bringing him back later. If they're going after Whitman now it's because they didn't get any bites on George or Tiley and don't have the stomach to go after someone else.

it's very possible they went "outside the box" and hired a non-illinois guy.

Regardless of who gets hired, there's bound to be a faction of fans/donors/alums/etc. who are upset.

Tough break.. can't please everyone. Just make the best hire to get things cleaned up and moving forward.

I suppose it could be Frazier. That would be a solid ground rule double of a hire. I would be surprised that those with influence would allow an impure hire, but maybe they come to their senses a bit and prioritize experience and success somewhat...

EDIT
Lubin? Lubin would be worse than Michael. Set the University on fire and collect the insurance if that's who you're hiring.

Lubin? Good god.

Wasn't Lubin the guy who said he'd like a crack at the job and said he thought it would be "neat"?

From the 4 being discussed, I rank them:

1. Frazier
2. Whitman

------Line of Acceptability------

3. Michael

-----Line of Outright Disaster-----

4. Lubin

Lubin would be a middle finger to the fan base.
