I think there are some false assumptions in the minds of many here, the biggest of which is every coach would take the Indiana job over Illinois. Some would, but some may not for all sorts of reasons including personal. We will make a great hire. Nothing is 'frozen' until Indiana acts. Calm down folks and trust JW

Keatts is justifying the hype early, but JW will have to break the trend of hiring the opposite of what just left.

Well obviously the underlying reality of Kevin Keatts doesn't change in one game, so what you're saying is that the market is dumb.

The market is dumb, but not as dumb as it was 20 years ago.

Not really. Tournament success matters and Keatts has never won an NCAA tournament game. Visibility in the tournament, especially an upset to a much higher seed, elevates someone's stock. Many coaches have parlayed their tournament success and upset wins into coaching opportunities. Plus, the timing in this case is kind of dangerous, with Martin off the market and IU just opening up.

It is one thing when what the market (not individuals) views at A options turn you down, it is another if maybe your second or third option all of a sudden becomes an A option in the marketplace, especially when As prove to be unattainable.

A big difference? There isn't.

A high level college coach at s great program going to another good program for more money is a BIG difference than a high level NBA coach, whose already coached college, going back to coach college for either the same or less money. Especially when you're coaching THE Boston Celtics.

If I'm alone here, tell me. But I don't think I am.

Id gladly take keatts. So gladly. With a sizeable Warchest left for top assistants.

Again, with whom is his stock elevated? The only people that really matter at this point are P5 ADs looking for a basketball coach. That's less than 10 people, and do you really think that IU or N.C. State isn't aware of Keatts?

Anyone questioning why Crean needed to be let go (or are surprised by it), basically it's the same situation as for Groce. He couldn't succeed with top level talent and his ceiling was never going to be high enough to meet expectations (which are even higher than ours!). IU being open is tough, but I wouldn't automatically call it a better overall job than Illinois. Facilities are worse, location is no better, expectations are even higher, and they play in the exact same conference as we do. Like us they are not the bright shining gem they once were (though they have had better recent success still) and may never again reach blue blood status. Fact is, we will probably offer as much money as they will and I might be a bit biased but I think we have a better AD to work for. It still has great history and is still a coveted job, but I just don't think it's as cut and dry as some might think.

Right. If someone is going to let one game change their opinion of Keatts, they're dumb.

There are dumb AD's out there. I hear NC State's is one of them.

And of course, if we're talking about like an Elite Eight or Final Four run, you're starting to make the resume look substantively different.

But in general, a great deal probably does not ride on this game.
