Just talked to my good friend Sam Mitchell. Former NBA Coach of The Year! He's interested in the Illini. We should be interested too.

Yuck

Getting back to the topic at hand, I'd be down with getting Bennett or Hoiberg. Do I realistically think Bennett will leave? No. He's building something that could be very special at Virginia, and I doubt he will want to leave. Then again, given enough $$, maybe he would.

I don't know if its the six million posts about Keatts, but I"m starting to think that maybe he might not be the worst choice. That being said, he's still not my first choice.

No way on Hoiberg. First of all, the bulls won't fire him. Second, Hoiberg hates recruiting. Openly hates it. Third, he has a perception as a failure in Chicago. The main recruiting hub for the university. Way too many cons with Hoiberg.

Bennett would be amazing, but I just can't see him leaving Virgina for us. Idk. I'd love to be wrong though.

Not interested. Mediocre NBA experience. No college experience.

My goodness

Nothing has happened. We are waiting for the fellers in the tourney to finish. Quit panicking. This isn't an 18 year old kid. We will be fine. Onward and upward.

Oh, so you're going to stick it out past the first unsourced, unsubstantiated rumor 24 hours into the process when no real communication has taken place?

How brave.

I don't mean to make fun, but we're in the fun house mirror now folks, everyone needs to take a chill pill about anything we hear from now until the ink is dry.

I want a splash and not in the kiddie pool either :(. I'll be honest Martin doesn't excite me but I'll give him a chance(not like I have a choice). Let's see what Whitman does.

Also, I can't see the Princeton offense of JTIII being a great recruiting tool. I mean, come on, we had the Flying Illini.

I'd do whatever it took to get Bryce Drew here. He's only been at Vandy for a year so I'm not sure he'd leave to come here, but I like how that team plays. They are VERY good, despite the sorta ugly record this year.

My problem with Cuonzo is that I don't think he can coach. I'm sure he can recruit, but his coaching skills don't impress me.

I dont believe we fired a coach who couldn't coach in order to hire another coach that couldn't coach.

This is what we need right now. We need someone who can get premier recruits so when they leave, we will be a hot commodity for a great coach.

The sky is falling....the sky is falling !! .....never mind it was just a bird crapping on my head......relax people relax !! JW will get us a quality coach. Perfect to some of your standards?? Probably not....damn you all are picky

I've been trying to tell you guys for a month now that if a coaching change was to take place that for an unseen surprise aka Lovie, that Cuonzo is going to be the next coach at Illinois. Now !!!!! all you want but no top tier coaches want to roll the dice here. FACT. He will keep the class intact, keep Walker and will make inroads in Chicago not seen since Jimmy Collins. He has street cred in Chicago.

I cooled on Cuonzo when Cal fell off at the end, but would be good with the hire. His ceiling is much higher at Illinois than any other job.

Now that Monty is out of the picture (and you should trust Woj), 95% of what you hear today through Sunday is going to be empty prognosticating.

Don't get your panties in a bunch over every rumor, positive or negative. Enjoy the tournament and Malcolm Hill's swan song-our coaching fun won't begin in earnest until next week.

Yeah, we want our coach to actually, you know, be able to coach. Cuonzo has plenty of time as a HC to show that his teams consistently under-perform.

All this speculation when we probably won't even know who the new coach will be until at least another week or so. I decided to do some digging on previous Illini coaching searches to see if they were as angsty as the one to replace Weber. Found some interesting speculation and tidbits from back in the day. Crean could have left Marquette to come here back when Self left, according to this article. It's also nice to have an ESPN article treat Illinois with some measure of respect.

Then I stumbled upon this article, where I learned that Kelvin Sanctions was apparently close to signing a deal here (which has probably been mentioned many times on this board but I probably skimmed over it).

As far as I could find, Weber was the only candidate to replace Self, as Guenther refused to name any other candidates according to this article.

I didn't bother doing any searching for the search that wound with Kruger, but it's amazing to see how much has changed regarding Illinois basketball since the early 2000s. This morning I was flipping through stations and settled for a few minutes on ESPN Radio's Morning Roast, until one of the hosts, when discussing with Eamon Brennan about how the NCAA tournament is an audition for coaches of smaller schools for bigger jobs mentioned, "Illinois just fired their coach. God knows why, they've been irrelevant for the past 10 years." I instantly changed the station out of frustration. I don't have to repeat how much I want this next coach to make Illinois successful just in part to prove the East Coast elitists wrong.

1. Why wouldn't he take a phone call? Wichita State just got slighted (again), and Illinois is one of the top 20 jobs in the country.

There's no point in Marshall not taking a phone call. He took one from Bama & got a big raise.

After the Blunder Years of Weber and the see-saw mediocrity of Groce, Illinois fans deserve to be picky.

No Zo.

So, about Cuanzo Martin...

We did not fire a good recruiter/mediocre coach to hire another good recruiter/mediocre coach.

JW knows that BOTH pieces need to be there and he has the money to make it happen. Or maybe he won't need to spend that much to get it. Our coach is in the tourney...
