An official "yes" certainly isn't happening until UCLA is out. A no, it depends.

how much would we offer him given his $$$ buyout?
He has 5 more years under contract at about $2.7m a year. No idea what his buyout is, but it's presumed to be very substantial. Let's say his buyout at this point is $8m (random guess) - if we're talking about $25m over 5 years being at the top end of our budge, that brings it to $17m over 5 years - $3.4m a year. An increase no doubt, but perhaps not an earthshaking increase from what he's currently getting. I guess if he likes Illinois better and we can buy him out and offer him a reasonable bump, he'd be in play.
Put it this way, if we're determined to get a final "no" from Archie, Marshall and Bennett, the marketplace is now frozen and will not unthaw until Indiana has moved.
I hope that's not Whitman's perspective, but Whitman has rich idiots to answer to.

I'd prefer to see UNCW pull the upset that way we can go all in on Bennett and find out either way....quickly.....speed seems like it may be quite the asset.

Maybe. I would assume that Indiana has already made those contacts if that's who they want. In other words, I think all of that happened a week or two ago and won't affect our search at all because it has already been asked and answered

If it goes down like that, it will be Kevin Keatts or bust. While we'll be the best job on the market, we'll still have to fend off Cal, Washington, Va Tech, LSU, Dayton, and whatever else opens up. If we try to lowball Keatts, or offend him by pursuing 2-3 other candidates who merely leverage our interest to get raises, we could be in a tough spot. Essentially, if one more big job opens (UCLA or wherever) and Bennett and Marshall decide to stay, the musical chairs analogy looks like one chair (coach) with 5+ desperate players. I hope Whitman is moving fast in case that very plausible scenario comes to bear.

Because Cuonzo is no longer an option. That felt like a safety net to some, although we knew Mizzou would be a player.

Also, Crean is a bad coach and recruiting has fallen off there. This is the right decision, IMO.

I still have faith that JW will get someone he wants. It's not like we still have MT who was playing checkers while everyone else was playing chess.
I hope you are right about Alford, just in the sense that it will make the whole process go quicker.

We had reason to hope Crean would stay and the Cuonzo+Porter to Mizzou thing wouldn't happen.
But those were the most likely outcomes as of two days ago.
Other schools are going to act in the ways that will maximize their success. That should always be the assumption.
