Kinda surprised it wasn't announced this morning. Probably not happy about footballscoop stealing their thunder.

Lol, I remember how giddy this entire board was for months when we snagged Garrick McGee. People were acting like we landed Vince Lombardi. Instead we got an OC so terrible he couldn't run any kind of offense without Lamar Jackson and chased off a RB who proceeded to run for 2300 yds and 21 TDs in 2 seasons in the SEC before making the NFL.

No matter who we get, lets wait till the season to start shooting off fireworks.

Now what fun is that.

I don't see much difference between Conklin and Walters really. Walters has the SEC experience, but either way I think either would translate fine into the Big 10 just fine.

I have given some Conklin stats in past posts. Here are some stats for Walters

Walters stats as Co-D

16-17

vs teams outside top 25 11-10 pts against 29.5
vs teams in top 25 0-4 pts against 43.0

Walters stats as Def Coordinator

18-20

vs teams outside top 25 17-7 pts against 21.6
vs teams in top 25 2-9 pts against 33.5

I will say Walters had a stellar year in 2019. He got lit up this year but also played the toughest schedule since arriving in Missouri. They played 5 top 25 teams out of 10 games this year. Also gave up 38, 35, 41, 41 and 49 pts against those top 25 teams.
And recall Nick Saban's recent comment about today's NCAA football (paraphrasing). The game has evolved to the point where it's all about offense. It's nearly impossible to stop the opposing team these days; instead, our goal is to score one more point than the opposition.

Saban and Bielema are on the opposite ends of the spectrum with that comment except for the score one more point than the opposition :)

Also opposite ends of the spectrum with national championships won.
We are Illinois, not Alabama. Alabama has had a long tradition before Saban was in place.

Sad thing is Saban has more NC than majority of us have seen Bowl Game wins alone in our lifetime at Illinois

No better time than now to start building a FOUNDATION for future years....

Kudos to BB and Whitman. Even though the slow leaks aren't meant to keep us guessing, this is the longest stretch I've been interested in Illinois football since we went on our winning streak last year.

This is why I wish that we had gone for the high octane offensive guy for the head coaching position. But oh well. Beggars can't be choosers.

We had a streak in 2020? 2 in a row with Nebraska and Rutgers. Now 2019, there was a streak . . .

Does this have anything to do with our new OC being a rumored candidate for the Marshall HC position?

If this is true good for him and I hope he has success there because it won't be easy.

Seems unlikely though if they want a higher ceiling than Doc gave them.

For all those hyping up Muschamp & Robinson, I do not get it. Both can recruit, but that is essentially what younger position coaches do. Neither have been that great from an Xs & Os perspective. But it is not like they had much (IF ANY) success in the SEC.

Heck, the highlights of Muchamp's career was getting hired by Florida and being the coach-in-waiting at Texas.

Do better...
Will Muschamp chooses buyout life over Texas defensive coordinator job (msn.com)

Not that I can keep Will on my list now that he turned down Texas but he has been a successful DC in college. We should be elated to have someone of his caliber running the D

Prepare for the smoke screen, bait and switch, Charlie Brown moment folks. Nut cup installed.
I knew it. Leak information to help our position against the field. Have Muschamp tell Texas to Pee Off, and sign him to a less lucrative deal he could get in Texas.

It seems so silly to suggest that, and yet in letting Holliday go it is clear that this is an irrational crazypants process, it is well documented that the governor wants to bring back the Bob Pruett era, and most of the figures of that era are ludicrously old and retired.

They will surely try to get Byron Leftwich, but he'd be stupid to take that job, he's in line for an NFL HC job sometime soon.

Beyond that, if fealty to Marshall's past is what you're looking for, Petersen as an ex-star QB and then 11-year assistant over two stints covering most of the glory years starts looking pretty good.

No way we're lucky enough for this to happen, but the Marshall process and outcome will be extremely stupid, of that I am sure.
