Do we retain anybody (Patterson?) or is this a clean sweep? Thoughts?
I don't go very deep into coaching skills/capabilities, but based upon our recruiting results and the product I see on the field, I can't imagine there's anyone worth keeping. Bring in the broom.

What about Hugh Freeze @ Liberty?
He's already come out and said he's been offered a lot of jobs but isn't interested in leaving liberty unless it's a "special" job. He's already turned down south Carolina idk why he would come here. I could see him going to Auburn though.

I do not think this was a spur of moment decision. I did notice, as I suspect many others did, that the coaching staff seemed to just let the game clock just wind down yesterday. Didn’t look right. You get possession with 6 minutes left, and you have your timeouts, so you should compete. They didn’t. It made me wonder if they knew they were done. Then Bob Golic said something about “we don’t know what the future holds” and I wondered if the word was already leaking around the press box. Not that you needed to be Kreskin to see this coming.

I look forward to him once again proving he’s smarter than any of us. BU is a home run. Lovie was a stabilizer but ultimately flamed out. Surprised all of us.
Think of that feeling when he hired BU. From Who? To ok. To what a steal. All within 2 weeks.
I haven’t heard the words “Josh Whitman is smarter than any of us” for a long time.... He was (is) a young hire from a division 3 school who had (has) a lot to prove. Next to Thomas he looks like a genius but giving him credit before success doesn’t help him grow into the AD we all hope he becomes. In life~luck, out working others, and building culture all play a part in success. I hope he (we) get lucky and the new coach turns out to be the right guy. This happens and five years from now I’ll be willing to say Josh Whitman is the smartest guy in the room. I hope I can say that! I want to say that!

No idea if he would be interested in coming here, but I would put the full court press on Gus.

Hoping for Bielema. He checks all the boxes of proven Big 10 winner, proven regional instate recruiter, and I think he’s put together an amazing staff. Given that Chryst is going to be at Wisconsin for a long time, I could see Bielema offering Jim Leonhard a “head coach in waiting” role to come over and be the DC. Get it done Josh.

A Kreskin reference...both rare and well played. Leipold or Jeff Monken for me...unless JW can make the miracle hire of Fickell ( yes, I know...ain’t happening)

I bet Auburn has contacted Fickell anyway...”Want to test yourself against the very best? Go head-to-head with Saban”

I do trust JW to make a good hire...Lovie was not a bad hire, it just didn’t work.
Is he still Amazing? (Is he still alive?)

The fact that Lovie couldn't make this program at least respectable shows just how daunting of a task it will be to turn this deep seated mess around. There's plenty of coveted young coaches out there like Jim Leonhard and Clark Lea, question is does anyone of those guys want to leave successful programs to basically start from scratch? If they can pull it off, it's going to take a lot of convincing and cash to do so because any momentum Illinois gained from that Wisconsin game last year has all but vanished.

Jeff Monken wouldnt be bad. Curious what type of staff he’d bring in. Really curious when the news will break, should I be ready to crack beers excited or be like, oh, ok cool?

Not yet "proven" --- true. But you have to admit he carries himself extremely well, he gives off a great vibe. he nailed it with his MBB hire, and he bleeds orange and blue.

Even with all of that said, very few AD's are allowed to make two consecutive football head coach hiring failures.

Let’s look at this another way. I’d like someone to come in and establish their own, new identity.

Therefore no to...
1) Retreads: Sumlin is in a shocking free fall. Bielema is a goof. Likely Malzahn here too (I’d listen, but likely no). Anyone who yells at people to get off their lawn.
2) Integrity: Anyone named Pitino or Petrino.
3) Former Bears coaches: Trestman. Sorry - sarcasm machine back on
5) Cannabis Options: Urban Meyer (I’ve seen it suggested).
6) too late: Tom Herman.

Targets: all of the young up and comers mentioned. 30 y.o. is preferred over 60 y.o. I’m open to the Monkens and Doerens of the world. Campbell would be a dream but wouldn’t come. He’s going really big at the next stop.

Supplemental dream hires to the new staff: Patterson on offense. Scheelhaase on offense. Holocek on defense.

Give me a hungry coach who can make it cool again to stay in state. Loved the all-Illinois OL lineup. It can be done.

Based on lack of enthusiasm I’d guess someone like Clark Lea. Mostly because that would not excite me
