I think they beat Rutgers one year (I know, I know, you asked for somebody good)
So - this would be a lateral move for him, eh?

His best win is probably winning on the road against the Temple team that got Geoff Collins the Georgia Tech job. They were definitely way, way better than Rutgers that year, which was the nadir of the Chris Ash era.Has buffalo beat anybody good since hes been there? Not saying LL’s a terrible coach but there’s not any games that get me fired up. The kent st W this year his best win?
I seen the rutgers, Charlotte and temple(2 x’s) and the rest are mac W’s from what ive seen or lower level teams. Armys beat him twice, I’ll ignore the penn st loss but theres a L to minny, liberty, troy and honestly couldn’t tell you without diggin more what mac wins or loss is good or bad.I think they beat Rutgers one year (I know, I know, you asked for somebody good)
+100Hey if we're rumoring Charlie Weis, lets dream "Big". Like really Big. Package Bielema as the HC, Weis at the OC, Mark Mangino (KU) and Jabba the Hut as the Special Teams Coordinator. I'm not sure they could land a plane that big at Willard.
There wasn't a search, it was reported hours after he fired Cubit that Lovie was the guy.I didn't follow much of the coaching search when Lovie came out of left field. Which coaches were being talked about before he got hired? Is it possible Whitman has some secret candidates and LL and BB are fall back options?
Speak for yourself. I would like a pic of her in Illini gear if BB is the choice! If we do hire him, I sincerely hope we will not have a "First lady of Illini football" picture taken.
Maybe they can do a Calendar......Speak for yourself. I would like a pic of her in Illini year if BB is the choice!
Maybe, but a much bigger payday. So - this would be a lateral move for him, eh?
I would buy one, two or maybe a hundred of themMaybe they can do a Calendar......
The thing about Lovie is that the entire thing was out of left field. It was March and Whitman's 1st or 2nd day on the job when it all happened. This is a more traditional search but JW sure seems to play it close to the vest. There's rumblings (board "insiders") that LL and BB did both interview and would both take the job. The timeline seems to indicate that JW will continue to push for someone like Fickell until the bitter end.I didn't follow much of the coaching search when Lovie came out of left field. Until we here that he is shopping for a place in Mahomet, or a UPS driver confirming the sighting, I am just not going to believe!I just left Kams and Fickell was in there doing shots with Ron Guenther, Lou Tepper, and Lucas Johnson. It was surreal...
I'm only suggesting that "first lady of Illini football" is so bassackwards that I would prefer to avoid that title for a coach's wife. I wish the entire state of Illinois wore Illini clothes all the time.Speak for yourself. I would like a pic of her in Illini gear if BB is the choice!
I couldn't agree more with TheFlyingIllini1317. Gus would be a homerun. The guy flat out wins. What's Gus going to end up doing??Arthur Gustavo Malzahn III - Tell me that's not a home-run hire who can win football games right away.
When you look back on it, Beckman was like a bad coach from an 80’s movie...all you needed was for Rodney Dangerfield to take over because his son was the kicker. Not thrilled with the idea of Leipold, but do not hate it either. I have listened to several interviews with him and have been impressed with his demeanor. Much better than our last MAC coach. Lasagna!

I agree that we definitely need someone who can connect with and recruit the state well. But keep in mind that the main source of that article is literally Monken's brother. He's not gonna say something like, "Well Jeff is at Army so I don't know if he'll connect with the 4 stars contemplating Michigan and Wisconsin offers."Looking at attainable guys, without doing any research and based on reading posts from this thread, leipold was my choice. but, reading the article in the recruiting thread disguised as a coaching article, I prefer Jeff Monken now. Both risks, would be better to go for the hire tied to starting the IHSA and bunch of relatives in coaching.
In 5 years if it doesn’t work out, and least Illinois HS recruiting sill be significantly better and have some traction. Can build on that. If leipold doesn’t work out, we are right back in this position again. Illinois and regional recruiting first criteria on my list...need to build it up or program will not be successful long term.
I definitely agree with that. But if there are so many monkens in coaching, they would definitely try to indirectly recruit/help their relative.I agree that we definitely need someone who can connect with and recruit the state well.
