Highly suggest not reading the comments, which can, frankly, be said for every single tweet at this point. It's going to be rough out there for the duration of the season. It's not worth engaging. Anyone willing to tweet about something they know nothing about isn't looking for a reasoned dialogue.
That’s part of the guilty before innocent culture these days.

I respectfully disagree. The court ruling merely held that he could not be suspended. It did not mention anything about playing time. It's been well settled that an athlete does not have any legal right to play the sport.

Practically, BU was likely never going to bench him after this ruling. But IMHO, he very well could if he wanted.

EDIT: Full disclosure, I have not read the entire ruling. I read the holding, but there very well could be something else in the dicta that would indicate otherwise, but based on the wording of what I read, I don't think so.

The simple, non-bias view is this: Underwood was instructed to treat him as any other player not under any sort of penalization.

And the truth is... at this point in time... Shannon still IS like every other player. Not guilty of anything. Accusation only and legal system reflexing to that.

To that extent, those who think Underwood should’ve taken matters into his own hands and not played him because of the allegations then those same people are stating Underwood is the proverbial judge jury executioner.

As said above... as Shannon is 'still not guilty of anything'... Coach would have no legit reason not to play him.

The only thing Shannon IS guilty of at this point is going into Kansas. And in some ways, that in itself is penalty enough. Anything else might be cruel and unusual punishment.

In a related vein (I think) and apologies if this has already been covered (I have been keeping up with this thread but I may have missed it) I was wondering how this will affect TSJ's votes for All Big Ten and/or his All American status. I can't help but think that there will be at least some who will not vote for him no matter how deserving he is. Hopefully, the charges will be dropped (if warranted which I believe will be the case but that is just my opinion and thus not worth anything) before the voting.
Not playing six games is probably enough to take him out of those conversations anyways.

You guys care about Gary Parrish too much.
I know ( or at least assume) you didnt mean that people are too invested in him as an individual, but big picture wise, shaming Underwood as someone with his platform can be detrimental. He reaches a wide audience and will receive zero backlash if the charges get dropped or dismissed.

He’s in a position to negatively hurt people based solely on his opinion. And he isn’t alone.

My guess is TSJ knows his shot at those awards is far less likely now, and has determined that his only recourse is to win, especially in March. May not be completely fair (depending on how the court case and rest of season shake out, of course), but will be totally fine on my end if that is the case.

I've seen people say this does not and should apply outside the legal realm. It's certainly something that has made me think.

Inside every comment is a fan of some school who would take the exact opposite position if the same facts applied to one of their players.

This is super helpful and illuminating. Based on this, it’s possible that the preliminary hearing was pushed back by the DA because she was worried the case would be dismissed when no probably cause was found after “witness” cross-exam. I’m sure she’d instead prefer a grand jury indictment where Terrance’s side isn’t able to plead their case before being charged.
if by "witness" you are referring to the alleged victim, that person does not need to testify for the state to prevail and move forward at the preliminary hearing stage. In fact, I would be shocked if that person did testify. Also, if the state chose, they could avoid calling any witnesses in a public hearing by simply taking the case to the grand jury where the defense does not have a right to present evidence.
I'm sure there will be an uproar here when the individual does not testify but that is our judicial system.

I thought I read that the reason for the 2 charges was that 1 was for the grabbing of the butt and the other was for the alleged penetration. Similar to somebody who had a gun and drugs getting a gun charge and also a drug possession charge. Even though the 2 charges were for sexual assault, they were for different reasons.

If Shannon plays like a first team, has the charges dropped eventually, but doesn’t get the love in the voting d/t the missed time or perceived guilt, does the university still give him the honors a first team should get? I would think so if the case is wrapped up how we all envision/hope at this point.

I don't think anyone really cares about him that much at all, he is just the convenient poster child for all the media people who are guilty of reacting to a situation and throwing their opinions around, without bothering with the troublesome facts.
I don't care about Gary Parrish AT ALL.........not the least little bit........he has always been unkind to the Illini program with his thoughts and words.....I quit paying attention to him years ago..........he is a buffoon and wearing those glasses just proves it.....an older , fatter and dumber Harry Potter look-a-like.......

It behooves me to strike out against a pinhead media blowhard who hasn't researched a topic before speaking slanderous monotone remarks like rape without adding ALLEGED before it........punk-arsed SOB............He really really is............

On a related note, I said to my wife last night how badly I wish these charges would just get dropped since I myself am having a bit of anxiety about road games (even if TSJ has nothing but ice in his veins!), and then I had a really depressing realization ... I'm not sure it would matter.

Visiting fans would still taunt him and yell extremely hurtful things. Fans are just like that. I think we'd all be wise to NOT put too much faith in the intellectual level-headedness of, say, Maryland students to be able to think, "Okay, the case was weak from the get-go, and now it's literally been dropped ... the odds are the guy is just straight-up innocent and doesn't deserve any of this."

P.S. I obviously only mean that it "doesn't matter" as far as how opposing fan bases will treat TJ. It goes without saying that a dropping of charges would be immeasurably positive for TJ's life.

The court claimed there was a scheduling conflict apparently. This does happen so whatever. Basically means this doesn't get resolved for a long time. That's quite dangerously close to the draft so even as it works in Illinois' favor, happening a month before the draft doesn't really help TSJ much in that regard.

Tweets, like every other form of online commentary, are non-taxable. That's why they're so voluminous: there's no way to impose a cost that limits volume and increases quality beyond a steep paywall. Even then, anonymity reigns and psychopathic trolls abound.

Also, sports journalists have column-inches to fill and no qualms about being untethered to reality.

That and he just su**s so, so bad. I used to listen to that podcast until he bragged about correctly, in only 10 minutes, predicting 63 of the 68 teams to make the tournament field a couple of years back. Bro - 90% of the field is locked in; you only had like 12 teams to choose from and you got 5 of them wrong. Not a hint of irony in proclaiming this accomplishment. Was genuinely proud of himself.

i'm not reading anything into the date being moved (as far as why it happened). this is par for the course in the us legal system. the sixth amendment is a joke.

Yep.

I'll say again, this is why I've resolved to use my actual name and picture on the internet. I realize it's dangerous, but it keeps me tethered to reality.

Eh, just because it's his right to have a speedy trial doesn't mean he has to exercise it or that the court is going to go out of its way to enforce it.

In fact, after going through a bunch of proposed dates, the prosecutor who was there said 2/23 didn’t work for him, but that he had the calendar of another prosecutor who could cover it. So it’s not surprising that it fell through.
