Even if nobody said it here, I do think that the poor scouting by the ratings sites has left us wondering exactly what caliber player we have. His rating for the U18 team is an anomaly. Good news keeps trickling in and he just seems to impress everywhere he plays. But the company he is keeping up with now is as we like to say, “elite.” So just as an honest question, where do we think he should be rated, and how many years do y’all think he will be playing here (before he goes pro)?
I think a lot of people on here have headr reports and, with orange glasses firmly in place, expected him to be better than his ranking. However, given who else was on the shortlist to make the team (and their rankings), I think it's probably safe to say most of us naturally wondered if he was firmly in the mix or on the bubble. That is probably best evidenced by the discussion about the cut down to 19 and who might be odd man out and whether Rodgers was solidly in based on his position and versatility (rather than purely on skill).

Either way, I'm happy to see him getting this kind of respect and can't wait to watch him in O&B (though RW&B is great, too).

No idea, but if he's playing less than 20 mpg this season, we're gonna be a VVG team. And that's the floor.

Two years. We have come a long way baby. Not so long ago Ty would have been the best recruit coming in. Now, he probably will not start.

Everyone on the board seems universally high on Rodgers. So most on here think he ought to be rated higher. This honor proves that our orange kool-aid wasn't actually laced with a drug in this instance.

I think he stays here 2-3 years then goes pro. But it really depends on how well he develops his shooting. He can already do everything else. He's like a more wing oriented version of Draymond Green, and that's a very valuable player. Won't be shocked if he's considered an Illini all-time great when his college career is done, even if it's not 4 years.

Anyone see anything about Rodgers shoulder? Rob had something on his twitter about him grabbing his shoulder and then being checked out on the sideline.

If he is truly a two and done, I’d have to think he’d find his way to the starting lineup, by EOY at least.

Must have been why he didn't play in the 4th. I hope it was just a precaution.

Everyone seems universally high on him but at the same time, few ppl expect him in the starting lineup or entirely forget to project him even in their depth charts. So that’s why I am just still wondering.

My bold prediction: he is in the starting lineup by EOY just due to how versatile a player he appears to be and his energy / hustle. Just a gut feeling. No science, analysis or prediction on who he replaces. Just gut. #teamrodgers

It would not surprise me. I expect him to be a star his soph year.

One thing that should be considered is that rating sites are not rating players on their likelihood of being on 18U national team and the national team is not trying to pick the best 12 guys — it’s trying to assemble a team. If PGs are rated #4, 7, 11, 13 and 14 (just making up numbers), but they only want 3 PGs, the number 13 and 14 ranked players are not making it. We know that Ty does the little things and has a motor that is always going. Is it really that surprising that when putting together a team, the national coaches want him in it? I mean it’s not like he had a #120 ranking.

I’ve watched Ty’s highlights and the first 8 or so minutes yesterday, and I’m definitely excited to see him in an Illinois uniform. Is he under ranked? No idea, and it likely depends on what the rankings mean (likelihood of making NBA roster eventually, impact in college, impact in first year, etc). Will he be a great addition to the Illinois team? Hell yes. It’s why BU wanted him and why the national team wanted him. But I think one needs to have Ty’s career and those he’s being compared to further along before saying the recruiting sites missed with their rankings of him. Can’t wait to watch him try to prove them wrong though.

In your example, you have players all ranked in top 15. ;)

Even assuming that they seek a depth of 2-3 players at each position and there is some overloading at a couple of positions in any given class, it’s gotta be rare that a player ranked in the 50’s gets selected for the team. That he not only got selected but is actually starting suggests to me that the USA coaches see something in him that the sites didn’t. That’s my takeaway anyways. Even the sites have to do some guesswork as they can’t see every player all the time. I believe they mostly get it right, but I think Rodgers is just one of those exceptions.

Well, DW wasn't too far off being in the high 40's. Just an exception to prove the rule. I don't recall if he started.

So Dain's one-and-done and Rodgers goes pro after 2-3 years.

Again, he may be under ranked, but I think what the national coaches are seeing from him is he is a dog who gets after it, does the little things and makes his teammates better. My point with the PGs was that if you have more players at a position trying out than spots on the team for that position, some won’t make it. And if those that didn’t make it are ranked higher than Ty, that still doesn’t mean Ty should have been ranked higher than those players just cuz he’s on the team. And that is what some on Twitter seem to be doing so they can say, “look, I told you Ty was great and ow you can see I know more than the ranking sites.”

Anyway, I don’t really care if he is over or under ranked. He’s very good, he will make this team better, and he will be a fan favorite. And I’ve no idea how many mpg he will play this year. BU and company will figure that out. But gonna be watching him and this team grow.

I think Ty can replace Goode at the 2.

His ceiling will be determined by how well he can shoot the ball.

Not too surprised he made the team, he is a very versatile player that does the little things well. A lot of top recruits are primary ball-dominant scorers and need to learn to become more versatile guys who can impact the game in more ways without scoring. It is rare to get a top recruit at age 17 that already is that sort of player, which Rodgers is, and that makes him an ideal fit for a tournament roster.

Yeah, I'll take USA b-ball over the services any day. The USA coaches have to choose the best 12 players they can find to win actual games. Case in point is Ayo, ranked 30-something by the services but was 6th-man for the U18 team, and proved to be all that and more.

It seemed to me that Whitmore had the injured shoulder, not Rodgers, and he didn't play the 4th quarter either. Maybe the coach wanted other guys in for mop-up duty, saving his top players for today.

We'll know in an hour!

I can't wait to see the Skyy and Ty show in the fall! We've exchanged a standstill shooting team for a down-hill breakneck squad. I believe that we will shock and awe the Big ten.
