On D? Zone or press? Who?
Point of a press or 1-3-1 type zone.

Hawkins (that guy last year)
Mayer
TSJ
RJ
Ty

I think they can all be that guy for different reasons. Ty’s motor as you pointed out, Hawkins length and he’s done it, Mayer, TSJ and RJ theoretically all have length and athleticism for a spot like that.

In something like half court zone It would be cool to see any 5 of those guys plus Dain. Don’t know if there’s enough handling there to run it as a real lineup that actually has to play offense, but 5 of those 6 could play a nasty zone. Probably with dain for a 2-3 and 1-3-1 look and without him for a 3-2 look.

But the fact that those 5 all have qualities that make a great point on a press, means you have some serious potential in other spots cause that point spot is difficult.

Since I don’t read every post, I guess I missed the context of this joke.

the 1-3-1 zone press was a great defense... before the three point shot! Any decent 3 point shooting team kills it with the corner 3. Why you don't see it around any more--can't cover the short corner well....

I think he could be good there, I just think we have 4 better options for that spot if it exists for us this year. But really if you got that many point options you’re gonna be fine everywhere if it’s a look you wanna have in the bag.
I think hes talking about playing the point in a zone defense. Top man in a 1-3-1 or the like.

EDIT: I see answered already

At the very, very, very least, whoever is starting in front of him is going to feel him in practice. Example: Ty's either going to force Coleman to live up to what he could be or he's going to take his spot.

Re: the rankings, I think recruiting sites (and draft gurus and so on) always struggle evaluating those players that they see are successful/winning players but that don't fit neatly in one's conceptions of what a 2-3-4 should be. Guys he's compared to -- Draymond, THT -- were also underrated/under-ranked guys in their careers. Ty's ranking is very similar to THT's. And of course all three (Draymond, THT, Ty) are non-shooters/not-great shooters, so it's seems like they might be a harder fit since they play like a point forward but aren't necessarily built like one. All I know is, right now it seems like the only thing Ty can't do is shoot at a high level and jump out of the gym, and while the former is extremely important in today's game, having all the other skills + intangibles at a high level is a really, really valuable player.
I can see Ty and Coleman as a part of a limited 3/4 court press work very well.

My high school won a state championship with that D, so I guess that dates me.

Watching the games so far, something that's really impressive is how sudden Ty gets into the double team on defense. And he does it under control, not sprinting at the guy but sliding his feet. And then BOOM just like that, he's all over the ball handler getting way into his space and completely denying his options without fouling. Just something to see.

Yep. Seems to be in control always and his decision making appears to be next level. I'm always looking for flaws and Rodgers seems to have very few. Which isn't to say he can't get better. But, sheesh, loving what I see.

You noticed that too. He alternates quick lateral movement with forward pursuit. And always using his arm length to distract. Incredible core strength and balance. Keeps a guy from driving around you. The first thing it reminded me of was actually in hockey with Duncan Keith. Although he employed the quick "bunny hop."

Don't see the Draymond comparison. Draymond was a high volume shooting 4 his last 2 years.

Yes I’m aware. But Belein used it with great success at the ends of halves and games and random switch ups just a few short years ago. And we have dudes that can run it, in theory.

In a 30 second shot clock game, a 1-2-2 press into a wide, long 1-3-1 kills a lot of time, which generally leads to bad looks offensively when you’re up against the gun.

So if we want a curveball, that’s a pretty good one based on our personnel.

Not enough ball-handling. I'm guessing one of Skyy or Epps will be on the court close to 100% of the time.
