Note to search committee: offer the job to Tiley.

Tiley: Please, please, please accept.

If Tiley becomes our AD, we're bleepin' golden.

I won't believe it until it happens, because this is Illinois, but if Ryan is correct and Tiley is interested enough to fly his !!! to Indy, then that should be the end of this process. You don't dick around, and you simply give the man whatever he wants/needs. How ever long it takes, you hammer out the details. Today. Then you send one of the lackeys to grab the other 6 candidates for a couple of minutes to say "We thank you for your interest in the position, but we've moved in another direction."

Tiley will be great. I do think the general fan base will be a little cynical that by bringing a tennis guy we're trying to be the Cal of the midwest (national championships up and down the more individual sports categories but mediocre on the Big 2 sports).

But I think Tiley will eventually be a winner.

I've had my hopes raised only to be let down soooo many times by beloved alma mater. That's why I can't believe that someone like Tiley could actually happen. But if it does...

We agree, but do Wilson and Killeen think that way? I fear they will ultimately make a decent, but not good enough offer to Tiley. They need to get to $1MM+ to get George and that's why odds are low for him.

Oh no doubt. So far Wilson and Killeen have shown themselves to be small time, uncreative thinkers who can't understand the big picture. I am expecting them to fail at this hire, but I'm hopeful that someone from the outside (Khan?) steps in and forces the right things to happen.

Yes, hopefully someone like Khan has assured them to not let something as trivial as a few hundred thousand dollars get in the way of making the right hire. I REALLY hope so, because he's really one of the only competent, big picture sports guys we have as a significant supporter.

Let me just throw out a crazy scenario, borrowing from what several previous posters said. Let's say they got to Tiley back in November after George gave them the brush off. Tiley says: look, I'm interested, but (1) I want to pick my football coach (explains the Cubit move) and (2) you have to keep my seat warm until after January 31, because I can't bail on Australia tennis until the 2016 Open is done with (explains the asinine three-month search process). Tiley is named AD later this week, Illinois having delivered on those two pledges. I would literally have to write to Wilson and Killeen and beg forgiveness for all the awful, horrible things I said about them. Please -- make me do it. It would be the most delicious crow I've ever eaten.

Its almost as crazy as firing the football coach a week before the season and firing the AD two months later.

Winners

Need to surround the program with winners. Craig Tiley has won at every level. Seems to have the smarts and the enthusiasm that the AD position needs.

I agree, pay him the money biggest he will attract much more dollars than his salary and those others on the list. In the end those other candidates are more expensive.

Right, which is why I am now obsessed with confirming that this was, in fact, an in-person interview.

If he's interested enough to come to Indy, you make that happen. Full stop.

As one of the self-appointed drivers of the Tiley bandwagon, I was fully prepared for an underwhelming hire with a "Honored, but time wasn't right for such a big move" after-the-fact statement from him. Now that he's officially in the mix? Game done changed.

Yep, the most expensive hire is one who fails. An AD who lifts basketball and football back to relevance would be cheap at any price.

I wouldn't confuse money with vision (hello Rick George miscall) but yes, having Khan involved with his checkbook can be a very good thing.

I choose to believe this scenario. :thumb:

Seems to be clearly two lists.

Frazier, Chun, Heeke, and Mehrtens are a demographically diverse and inclusive group of outsiders from other schools which are clearly the progeny of the administration, the search committee, and the search firm.

Tiley, Whitman and Michael are the Rick George fallbacks that have been chosen by the donors who orchestrated Thomas' demise.

Seems to me that any of the top list would face a basically impossible task, coming as an outsider trying to win back the support of the Guentherites who shunned Mike Thomas. And of course all three of the others have deep Guenther ties with all the worries that brings.

I'd be shocked if the choice was one of the first four as opposed to the latter three, but I have been shocked at least three times in the last few months.

Mehrtens in particular is a fun name to have on the list, I can't imagine a better person to represent the sum of all fears for the way this process has gone and people's perceptions of the agenda of the administration.

Checks the box on a female candidate. Hopefully no more than that. Weird they couldn't find one without the same baggage as what we've swept out though.

Also, if this is a final round of interviews before an imminent announcement by week's-end, having 7 (8 if Tiley is in too) candidates at this juncture seems bizarre. I'd think you'd be down to 2 or 3 by now.

Might be why it took them a month to bring in a search firm. They were just stalling for time.

Just heard on the Score that Tom Michael is the front runner :frustrated:

Seriously?

If Craig Tiley is actually interested and we choose Tom Michael over him, then I can't be more serious when I say - just drop to NAIA and stop this silliness.

I heard that about a sun times article. I choose to not belive that. But if that is the choice that may be it for me. If people in charge are that incompetent, then I need to find something else to follow.

Pay him whatever it takes. The U of I will make it back and then some on ticket sales, donors, increase in applicants after our football and basketball teams improve, apparel sales, etc.

PLEASE can this be a thing?!

Everything's been pretty tight lipped up to this point. Can't see them letting this leak.

If it was Bernstein who said it, he seems to know Shannon Ryan. He doesn't have sources of his own though. He pretends to. So also a chance he just looked up who had the strongest ties to Illinois and went with it.

I'm guessing it was Bernstein since he's the only one who ever talks illini on there, usually for the worse.

If they hire Tom Michael I'm changing my interim fan status to ex-fan.
