Smith looks like a prototypical PG that could provide stability at that position for our program. Unless he is slow footed, his size and ability to drive appear to be very good at the next level. He has a good shot and him going for an alley oop off and inbounds was pretty impressive. Describing him as "raw" is inaccurate, comes in with skills. After seeing the Maryland game we need ball handlers and guards that can defend. Damonte, Trent, TJL, and Smith could form a solid core at the PG/SG positions.

He didn't look slow footed to me and I was prettt close to the court. Seemed fast straight line. Decent quickness but built like a tank

More of a combo, IMO. Smith can play the 1, 2, or 3. Team him with guys like Frazier, Williams, Pickett, Nichols, JCL, Lucas and you have something.

Great game in Collinsville. ESL is so much better with the football players back. Night and day difference between when I saw them in Springfield.

Pretty lopsided officiating in OT or ESL probably gets the win.

Interesting weird fact of the night...Parham sat in the seat directly next to Goodwin's dad during the entire Edwardsville game.

Michael O'Brien ‏@michaelsobrien 22m22 minutes ago Danville pulled this off without key player Caleb Griffin. He's one of the best FG kickers in the country, left today for an event in FLA.

This is the kid who hit the game-winner last night. Is Lovie interested in him? I don't follow football recruiting that much (other than to know we're doing pretty good so far.)
Caleb Griffin is a major league kicking prospect. He is one of the top players on their soccer team as well and has one of the strongest and most accurate legs I have seen on the soccer field and I have seen a lot of soccer over the years. I understand Ohio State is looking at him strongly and with good reason...his foot is a weapon!

hmm. Unfortunately (for West Aurora fans) he's got a pretty wicked long distance basketball shooting stroke too. Wherever he goes to kick, I'll certainly remember the name.
Thanks for the info!

I watched the last few minutes of that game yesterday. That was a BIG TIME shot and Danville deserved that W if only to counter the atrocious refereeing. Should we begin talking about Caleb Griffin on the FB recruiting thread?

Last night was my first time seeing them both live, but i'll give this a try.

Smith definitely seems to me like a much better ball handler than Goodwin. I think Smith is probably faster straight line and a little quicker, while neither are super quick. Both are strong. Goodwin looks quite a bit longer than Smith. Smith seems to either score with the 3 ball or at the bucket whereas tonight Goodwin hit a couple mid range shots. Goodwin's jumper didn't look good from deep tonight. It seems Smith would be the better shooter of the two from deep.

Again this was all based on 1 game in person for each

Read some comparisons of a more athletic Demetri Mccamey by a pretty smart dude.

I don't want to add to the hyperbole, I was thinking the same thing. Was trying to keep things in perspective as McCamey was a top 50 recruit out of high school and scored 30+ points as a freshmen against Indiana. Just from watching Goodwin and Smith, I think Smith's game translates better for the college game. Smith is a PG, shoots well from 3, passes well, makes good decisions, and knows how to run a team. Goodwin is a tweener IMHO right now. His handles and 3 pointer aren't college ready at this point to be a PG or SG. I have been wrong about players before but, Goodwin strikes me as a Rayonte Rice, Rooselvelt (Butler), Wayne Blackshear types.

More athletic, plus taller and doesn't take nearly as many plays off. Not a big comparo guy, but the DMac comp is decent. Just want to be clear: talking DMac as a propect/recruit, not an upperclassman.

Sure.. Always important to remember the context of comparing them as prospects coming out of h.s... Not saying he's going to step on the court and average 7 assists as a frosh or shoot 45% from 3..

Hope Smith has another great game against Groce and gets his offer. We need him.

Roger that. Don't think it should take a great game either, FWIW. Smith's body of work merits an offer and full court press.

As to my disclaimer in my original post, felt it should be stated, to avoid misinterpretations.

I know dmac is who I thought of when I saw smiths tape.

The comparison is more apt I think than the Russ Westbrook one i saw earlier in the thread!!!!

This is the best comp I've seen. I believe his father is also a high school bball coach. Always like the IQ that comes with that influence.

Dmac is obviously a way better comp. I said a poor man's Westbrook earlier just in the sense that he's a big, multi-tool, new age PG who has a knack for rebounding and plays a relentless style. Wasn't implying they're in the same universe talent-wise - was trying to make the point that Smith has a similar size/style package to current successful NBA lead guards. Also in my defense, I was heavily inebriated when I made that post.

Did you walk yourself back from Michael Jordan before arriving at Westbrook?

Never drink and evaluate HS prospects kids ;)

Gonna be another great game tonight at 7:30 between smith and Goodwin. Smith got the best of Goodwin last time, you know Jordan will be out for revenge, especially with all the attention smith has has been getting since that last game.

I don't think i can make it in person, probably sold out anyway, but I'll definitely watch the stream

Again, wasn't trying to imply that they were comparable talents. Here's another comparison I would make in terms of STYLE and PHYSICAL TOOLS: Trent Frazier is similar to Jason Terry. I don't think Frazier will become a 17-year NBA player and multiple time All-Star because he's a skinny, bouncy, attacking combo guard with a quick release and a lot of swagger.

Some people, for reasons I can't comprehend, will not abide someone making a playing style-based comparison. They automatically go, "you think (blank) is going to be the next Patrick Ewing?!? That's ridiculous," when the comparison might have nothing to do with maximum potential or predicted outcomes. Here's what I think: there are tons of guys I'd compare to Michael Jordan - 6'6, athletic, aggressive, scoring wings who don't rely on 3pt shooting. Doesn't mean I think they're as good as Jordan or even "good" at all, necessarily.

But yes, re: Smith/Westbrook, I was super drunk. Probably should ease up on the posting at that hour.

Don't worry, most of us understand what you meant, and even some who cracked jokes know too.

I beleive this is a picture of Mark Smith.
He is even wearing an Illini shirt, so pull the trigger now and give this guy an offer.
