OK, last comment on this issue, re KU. Obelix, I did make the disclaimer about us not knowing if KU offer is committable or if Ayo has even eliminated him.

You bring up many valid points. I suppose MY real point is AT THIS POINT IN THE RECRUITMENT.! Up to now, you do the dance with whomever shows interest. At this point, you are getting more serious, and if school A is not showing the same level of commitment, then it is time to move on.

Ok, thanks for the conversation, back to who will pop first :D

I know everyone is different, and each situation is different, but this part of recruiting is what baffles me.

Unless your heart is set on a particular program, like for us on here Illinois, how do you not drop a program like Kansas if in fact his offer is not commit able right now?

I'm also sure the key to all these offers is making them look as committable as possible. I don't think Kansas is going to say here's an offer, congrats you are the third choice for our pg schollie. It is more likely they are going to stall the official visit and the process until after choice 1 & 2 have a chance to visit and then gauge there interest while all the time telling kid #3 he is top priority.

Think so. Hearing that they won't have enough rides to take any back up options and that the Devon Dotson/Zion Williamson package deal is very much alive and well in Lawrence.

If Zion and Dotson both head to KU that leaves them with one ride.

And although it is very complicated, that one ride could go to 5* Mitchell Robinson who visited Lawrence last weekend.

Yep and Id believe there may be some degree of marketing value in the selected school able to say "we beat UK (or other blue blood) for (x player)" .

My bet though is that most coaches would take an early commit over that potential brag factor succeeding over bluebloods for a recruit.

I do not think the brag factor is a big deal as far as accepting a commitment early. Coaches would always prefer to secure a commitment as soon as possible, the value of Ayo (and other highly ranked players) is that you end up with Ayo on your roster, independent of the short list.

If coaches had a choice, they'd rather secure commitments before big name programs get heavily involved late in recruitments, because going up against UK, KU, Duke, etc. late in recruitments has a lot of added risks involved.

Level of commitment matters more when comparing things that are more or less similar. That is not the case in most recruitments, most recruits view certain schools higher on their list. Desire to go to a specific school is very important. Case in point, we are obviously showing more commitment to Castleton, yet he seems to have Florida higher on his list.

What matters is how Ayo feels, Illinois may be very high on the list despite KU.

FWIW, my sources close to the situation tell me that Ayo will end up at Illinois :)

This. Standard operating procedure for high major programs. Make every recruit feel like he's your plan A guy and never, ever reveal your prospect boards.

There is one reason KU offers players like Griffin: he's a backup and probably viewed as an excellent bench player and maybe even a starter someday. The reality is that even Kansas strikes out on most of its offers. According to Self, he considers success to be getting 1 out of 3 players to commit, and some of those will not become starters. The KU offer gives Griffin prestige and status as an elite player, and is very affirming. He'll always have that. On the other hand, it may not give him the comfort he is seeking, wanting to shine on the court, rather than on the bench, to be viewed as a recruiting priority.

Ayo is different. Self would view him as an eventual starter. The problem for Ayo is timing, competition, and the constellation of players Self is recruiting. It's not that other players at his position are better than he is, but that Ayo is not the lead domino who, if he commits, can lead to a possible recruiting sweep of other elite offers. Everywhere else, he's the number 1 recruit.

Of course, this thinking could be 100 percent wrong. It's simply one way of trying to make sense of why these guys wait. Why risk a position at a school you want to play for because you wait too long? Either (1) they have no idea of what they want and need more info and time; (2) they are holding off hoping for a position to open; (3) they want to take official visits as paid vacations; (4) they enjoy the attention; or (5) they don't control the decision. This waiting happens every fall and, at least for some guys, I've never understood it.

I have no idea why people feel the need to downplay official visits as just "paid vacations." Taking official and unofficial visits is the sensible thing to do, so no surprise whatsoever.

Marvin Badgley III is announcing his college decision tonight. Duke, USC, UCLA, and Arizona. Still wants to be cleared to play this season but hasn't. What are the chances he laces up this season?

Fair point, although to assume that "some" kids don't take officials for the fun of it, probably knowing there is a low chance of selecting the host school, may be an overstatement as well.

There is no suspense. If Marvin Bagley wants to be (he does) he will be 2017 class. Duke has recruited him for 17 for extended time.

I would think UCLA is a target since they are on quarter system and start end of September (according to an article I read), and gives Bagley more latitude to get this worked out with clearing house. Conceivably if he isnt cleared he could change his mind before school starts in September. Have no clue how close he is to qualifying.

To me it is remarkable how some of these players are able to pack 4 years of HS and NCAA core reqmts and testing in 3 years of school on top of AAU and basketball workload.

I would love to understand what the difference between a Jontay Porter academic progression was in 3 years (assuming he is cleared?) vs a Marcus Lovett progression in 4. No doubt, careful planning involved. The counselors and academic advisors can be worth alot to these kids if they can get them into NBA a year sooner.

As has been shown often, the NBA will find you anywhere.

Up until now, I'd convinced myself that Kate Upton wasn't calling because she didn't know how to contact me. Now, you've ruined that.

Thanks, man. :(

On the opposite end of the spectrum, when does the 3rd quarter end and 4th quarter begin? He could conceivably drop out after the third quarter, and focus on predraft if it happens at the right time. And if he drops at the quarter in good standing, does that hurt uclas apr?

Weber just got an extension,(yeah for him). Hope he stays there 10 more years, don't want that place or KU coming open anytime soon.:illinois:

Underwood has some huge buyouts for the early years of his contract. Anything before 3 or so would be a lot for the new school/him to cover. It also sounds like he understands where Illinois basketball stands in the hierarchy of college basketball. OSU was a good job, Illinois is a great job. Indiana/Louisville would probably be elite and then the blue bloods. I doubt he would go down the hierarchy unless we won a title and he just really wanted to go home.
