Anyone know when/Where the Wake Forest Game tickets will go up for sale? I'm in med school out here and would love to get out to the game

I'm in Raleigh, and going to the WF game too. How can we sit with other Illini fans?

I seem to remember a young Michael Finke that was redshirted and he has stated several times that the redshirt year really helped him out. If Matic was to RS, I think it will be a huge benefit to him and the team.

I'm all in favor of redshirting Matic. He has a lot of good potential, but really needs muscle. A year in Fletch's program can do wonders for him.

Question for those that have looked into going to the game against UNLV at the MGM Garden Arena. Is the University selling tickets to this game? Just trying to sit with other Illini fans if possible.

I think the DIA has tickets as it seems the Phoenix Illini Club will be getting group seats from them

I would try calling them directly. Not as convenient, but sometimes it can be advantageous. They can at least tell you when the tickets will go on sale.

Large groups usually get in first which may be why Phoenix Illini have a block already.

Oh I totally agree. I was just looking into what our coach said and how good Jason Kidd actually was (spoiler alert, really gd good), which anyone would have a hard time replicating.

All try to draw comparisons, BU implied that one. Think he has a better idea than any of us. Not saying he will be second coming, but seems obvious that many think Mark Smith will be damn good.;):illinois:

His defenses have usually been good. The year before last, SFA averaged over 80 and gave up 63.

Last year, OSU led the league in scoring at almost 86 a game but gave up over 78. Definitely more up and down the court than we are used to.

I'm confused. If we score 86 points each game, and give up 78 each game, won't we be undefeated and be national champions? :D

Seriously though, is this going to be a year of the proverbial "out score them" v shut them down?

I think it is the "outscore them" era of ILL basketball. When you examine the defense that Underwood likes to run, it is exciting as hell. SFA lead the league in forced turnovers one year, IIRC. Basically you force the ball handler to the left. He forces the ball handler into limited options. I don't think for a second that Underwood's defenses are incapable of B1G defense. In fact, they have a great chance of giving us a few extra possessions a game.

I told everyone months ago we were no longer going to be a lockdown defensive team. Not that we won’t have the ability but that we will simply play too fast for that. We are gonna be out there running and gunning and scoring points. We are definitely going to be the outscore your opponent type of team. Which should be very entertaining. win or lose.

When exactly was the last time we were that?

I guess my concern is all the ILLNI faithful/fans are so quick to cut down when others are making positive comments as it relates to the program or a player being successful. If I'm not mistaken "We want the ILLINI Hoop program turned around. I would think or hope everyone on here would want Mr. Basketball to be just that A DANG GOOD PLAYER for the Orange and Blue!

If he happens to be even better than expectations then that will mean the program should be winning the games they should win, and stealing a few games the critics aren't giving us a chance. I hoping Smith is as good or better than the normal expectations for a freshman!

I don’t know if it was the last time but Harry Combes coaches a run and gun offense that hit the century mark without three pointers. That was a few years ago, though.

Not sure how many 100+ games there were, but yes! And my father-in-law was one of Coach Combes' point guards :thumb:

I watched a Purdue game with an Illini victory at Huff Gym the was over 100 for the beloved. There wasn’t much defense. Those were heady days.

Well, boys and girls, you can check it out for yourselves. Fighting Illini basketball, as a few — the herd is thinning — remember it.

The 1964-65 Fighting Illini.

If memory serves me correct, UCLA repeated as NCAA champions that year.

And, as noted, this was a time before the 3-point shot and the shot clock, when the “four corners offense” was in full bloom.

IIRC (not a given, these days), Harry Combes once remarked that he adopted a “hockey philosophy” to basketball — the team with the most shots on goal was the team with the best chance of winning.

I was at that UCLA game and it wasn't as close as the score. Bill McKeown who averaged in double figures broke his arm in the 9th game and was lost for the season.

When we hired BU and I saw what he wanted to run, I didn't think of the 89 Illini at first but Harry Coomb's teams.

Harry wanted one big man and a whole bunch of super quick scorers.

I am sure the "innocent primate" will agree with this but believe it or not kids, there really was a time when we kicked !!! and took names later.

Harry Combes was legit! If Underwood can live up to that legacy, I think that we'd all be happy.

There were Bruce Weber years where it seemed like we could hold any team to 50 points... But only manage 49 ourselves:(

The further away from that gameplan we can get, the happier I'll be.

Maybe the term lock down defense was too strong. But you know what I meant. There were still times when we thought we could hold teams to certain totals. That’s no longer a thing. I’m not saying it won’t happen, it might. That should be the exception with our team now and not the rule. The rule should be that we score fast and often. And hopefully do just enough that our opponent scores a little less.
