BRucks, you seem to be a very old school Illini fan who has put in his time. Given the ADs you have seen in your time, I am not sure how you can really complain about Josh Whitman of all people. Frankly, he makes our last two look like chumps.

Whitman looks better than Thomas and Guenther? Not a real high bar you're setting there. You really need to go back to Doug Mills to find a good one at Illinois. For all I know Whitman may prove to be the cat's meow. At this point, he seems to have hired a couple strong coaches. The rest, not so much. Do you disagree with my assessment of Smith, Fahey and Turk? Tim Freaking Beckman had a better record than Lovie Smith. Tell me which of these coaches hired by Whitman are better than average - Smith, Fahey, Walsh, Tamas. There is also Bielema but it is a little early to evaluate him. He has promoted three other coaches - Turk, Poeta and Clark. Poeta is only a few days into his job, so not fair to evaluate. Turk's team just finished 9th of 12 on the men's side and 11th of 13 on the women's side (track and field). Clark's team is currently 8 and 8 (women's tennis). Tamas took the volleyball team to the final four in his first year (2018), went 16-14 the next year, followed by a cancelled covid year and 7-11 this year. Walsh's teams have finished 3rd, 2nd, and 3rd out of ten conference women's gymnastic teams. Fahey has won 6 B10 games in four years finishing 14th, 14th, 13th, and 13th. Had her contract extended through '24-25.

Fundraising has been strong under Whitman:https://fightingillini.com/news/202...rgest-fundraising-year-in-school-history.aspx He has certainly worked to improve facilities which is a big plus. Some might cringe at the debt buildup in the athletic department (second highest in the country): https://illinois.rivals.com/news/budget-50

The latest Learfield IMG College Director's Cup ranking I can find shows Illinois at 9th in the conference: https://nacda.com/sports/2018/7/17/directorscup-nacda-directorscup-previous-scoring-html.aspx

I heard the OPH came in at the 12th hour with lifetime vouchers for Antigua & family. It was too much for Kentucky to overcome.
Hold on a minute, I'm hearing the Lexington OPH is now offering lifetime vouchers, a reserved table and valet parking for Antigua & family.

To say Smith was a bad hire in retrospect is easy, but I think (andI I could be wrong) that the majority of us thought it was a pretty good hire at the time.

LoL, I think it’s reasonable to assume both schools, ADs and staff have fully researched and know the true market values better than we would as fans.

I thought it was the best we could hope for at the time. Previouis AD's swung for the fences and were laughed at. We took a chance going in a different direction. We underachieved but does anyone think the program is worse now than when Lovie Smith took over? We were actually able to have a televised spring game and fielded two full teams this year. As I recall, that was not the case when Lovie took over. I didn't like his son working on the team, Lovie was too aloof with alums and didn't embrace recruiting 100% - that's fair. I hated how predictable our defense was - we were way to easy to prep for. But for all of that, I feel we made strides... almost beat Michigan, beat Wisconsin at home... we had our moments - we lacked consistency as we lacked depth. Josh made the right call at the right time. If we keep improving for the next four years then it's pretty tough for me to be disappointed. Lovie took over when the program was in the sub-sub-basement, he stopped the digging, and we crawled out of the cellar. Get me to a bowl game every year and contend for a division title every once in a while and I'm pretty happy assuming the kids stay out of the news and make grades. From Tepper on... I have a low bar.

Well said. It was a thinking outside the box hire. It was a bit risky, and didn't pay off to it's potential, but I was ecstatic at the time he was hired. I'd much rather have taken a shot at Lovie than continued with Cubit, or whoever the third best MAC coach was at the time.

I'm sure Whitman knows this moment is massive for the program and I'd guess it's a lot easier to find money when you can point to success.
Pretty big statement to the college basketball world if we end up winning this battle against one of the best college basketball programs in history. Fingers crossed.

Is the emergence of a new college basketball league where they pay the players a bigger concern than what assistant coaches we have?

I'm very worried that it'll destroy NCAA hoops

Eh, the NCAA is extremely entrenched. I feel like the more likely option is that this competes with the G League and/or the NCAA hastens their move toward a sane treatment of players to avoid this league truly competing with them.
