I wonder if Greer was even a target?

Has anyone mentioned Butler assistant Omar Lowery as a speculative target? Bio link

No inside info here. Just looking up names. And not that these elements are essential requirements, but I note that Lowery:
-"works primarily with post players"
-was named to Silver Waves Media 50 Impactful High Major Assistant Coaches List in 2020.
-is from Milwaukee
-is top asst at Butler, a top national program from a conference looking up at Big Ten
-previously coached in Wisconsin, Texas, and California

Honestly, I'm enjoying the speculation surrounding coaching positions as much as I do player recruitments.
Well, if he ends up with a promotion, you can be held directly responsible.

Assuming we actually had anything to do with this, I don't think your logic is sound. It assumes we (UI) placed exactly as much as or more value in Greer than they (UD) did. But if we thought he was worth, say, $400k, and they thought he was worth $500k, then I am glad we didn't go bigger.

Again, hypothetical. We have no idea if we are even involved here.
Not sure this is the right way to look at it, when you're talking about something you can only retain a limited quantity of (like ACs). For example, say Candidate A provides $400k value (as measured by wins, recruits, player development - however you want to measure it), at a cost of $500k. Candidate B provides $300k value, at a cost of $200k. If you're trying to maximize value and you can only have one, you choose Candidate A, as he provides the most value, even though he's not as cost-effective. This is especially so when you can't take your savings from Candidate B and use it to find additional value (since you already have your other positions filled and can't pay players).

The greater likelihood is that they're not getting the candidates they're trying to hire. It's a key position, so it's hard to imagine that they just haven't started trying yet.
yes that would be hard to imagine.
Same true about your first sentence?

It's becoming clear JW & BU are in the middle of a ploy to get all other athletic departments to use up all of their extra money on assistant coaches. Brilliant.
I think just Kentucky and maybe Gonzaga, but could be wrong. LOL

I still think there is a coach that has been identified, but hasn't pulled the trigger for a reason. He may be weighing an offer from a NBA team or waiting on another opening before making a final decision.

Somebody choosing between an AC position with us or a position with the NBA?

Ultimately, it's a marketplace, and every buyer places value on specific instances of the commodity. If we were going after Greer (and there is no actual evidence we were), there is no guarantee that our estimate of his worth matches that of UD. I get your argument, but the situation here hypothetically is two schools going after Candidate A. He costs $500k. One school thinks he provides $300k worth of value and the other thinks he provides $400k worth of value. How far over your estimate are you wanting to go?

It's all hypothetical because we don't know if we were actually interested in Greer and made on offer. But given that, IF we were interested in Greer and IF we made on offer, presumably he would have been our top candidate for the job at the time we made the offer (because who offers the job to anyone other than the top available candidate?). So in this hypothetical scenario, I would sincerely hope we valued our top available candidate for the position of top Assistant Coach at least as much as Dayton, otherwise I'd be a little concerned. The only other possibility is that Dayton massively overpaid, which I guess could be the case.
