I truly chuckle every time I see a comment about top 25. The Illini, with their AA playing a very poor game, took the best team in the country to double overtime....and spotted them an 11 pt. deficit in the last 20 min. It makes little sense to remove them from the top 25, but it may happen. I could care less!!!!!! They proved to have the weapons, skills, and HEART to compete with the very best. And they will. There are more important games coming and their play is getting better. Enjoy this team and support them to the end....they are playing their guts out.
was being sarcastic and agree with everything you said

BBV, man, the great kick-outs, diving on the floor, the play where he stole Trevion's lunch. But probably the best thing about his play today was denying their bigs low post position. Both Edey and Trevion got the ball no closer than 10 feet from the hoop when he was guarding them.

Right, so no Kofi for 10+ minutes, and the foul disparity is a small impact. Gotcha.

I hated the 3rd foul call on Kofi, which was not called on others, including Verdonk.

Then Kofi fouled on each of the next two possessions. They let him get away with the first one, how many make-ups are they supposed to give us?

If you have this game on DVR, I dare you to go back and slo-mo all of the questionable calls, and then tell me how it was. Very, very few games are decided by the refs, but this one was. OT is irrelevant, because the refs are the only reason it went to OT. Worst performance by the refs I've seen this year, JMHO.

Dude you can slow-mo every call and it looks bad. The refs did Kofi a favor and swallowed the whistle on one when he had 3 fouls and then he picked up the fourth like a couple seconds later.

A couple games in the past year or so stick out as very poorly officiated and this was not one of them.

Yeah that Omar mental mistake can't be understated. Gotta keep you're composure especially when you have the momentum
And he did it two feet from Painter. I think the zebra missed it until Painter went ape so they went to the monitor.

A couple of thoughts-First how about Curbelo and BBV. What a performance from both of those guys. Tough to lose, but you aren't going undefeated in the big ten. Great game. Win on Friday and we probably won't move too much rankings wise. What a game between the two best teams in the league. Have a feeling this will propel us to another long winning streak.

Not just Kofi, but Kofi with Curbelo feeding him nice passes down low. Don't remember them on the floor together much and most of us remember how lethal that was last year.
yeah, was hoping to see some of that 2nd half but obviously didnt happen. better days ahead methinks

I disagree

If you watch the replay Sasha s
Came down and tripped on his own feet. Was not touched by Trent
He was “gently caressed” as I said at the time.

(Yes, I am just as ridiculous in person, my buddies are used to it)

Kofi- 5 fouls

Edey AND Williams combined - 4 fouls

Illinois combined bigs - 10 fouls

Edey AND Williams combined -4 fouls.

Illinois fans annoying ref complaining aside, I laugh in anyone's face that thinks this was not the biggest factor in the game.

I also personally guarantee you Bo and DJBaldy swallowed their whistles in the second half with BBV.

The no calls were even worse than the bad calls.

Edey doesn’t need to foul and he knows it

Fantastic game and what an effort by the guys. Underwood should have some fine Belgian beverages and chocolate m BBV should get some refreshing Belgian beverages sent to his apartment… on January 30 when he turns 21. I loved our heart, hustle, and clutch shooting until the last few FTs.

To weigh in on the key debate:
“Blame it on the officials”? Or
“Can’t blame it on the officials”?

Losses are never just about one thing. In this game there were 4-5 really big calls that went against us. The two most obvious:
- Kofi’s 3rd foul
- Edey mauls BBV, no foul

Those are probably a 3-5 point swing, which in an OT game clearly have an impact. So, sure, you CAN blame the officials in part — although I’m sure neither Underwood nor the team will, since that’s the part over which they have almost zero control.

There were many, many other things we could have done:
- Plummer loses his man for the back-door layup in OT2
- Didn’t adapt well to Edey’s size until into the 2nd half
- Also slow to get the offensive boards up and running. Did we have any 2nd chance points the first half?

I’ll wrap it up with my first point though — great game that has me excited for the rest of the season (especially February 10). Too bad some calls didn’t go our way, but we still had every opportunity to come out with a huge win.
- Kofi will learn from a down game (he always does)
- BBV will get a huge confidence boost (I mean, the dude guards Kofi in practice, it had to translate to a game eventually)
- Plummer knows he can still set the nets on fire
- Curbelo’s back in the mix and looked mostly good — maybe a bit out of control at times, especially that throw away on the loose ball rebound, but his best real game of the year by far.

Go Illini

I thought the call on Trent v stephonovic 3 was a bad call that changed the game. We were down one at that point.

No excuse to close out in that way on Stefanovic. Sure, he flopped a bit but refs in the college and NBA game are going to call that every single time. You have to be smarter.

That’s a 40/60 call though y’know? It’s not a phantom, it’s just a soft call.

Verdonk was fouling on every scramble drill. A lot of stuff happens in a game.

Right...so again...they swallowed their whistles on some obvious fouls against BBV....or now you can add 3 more fouls to our bigs vs their 4.

It was a joke. To suggest otherwise is just trying way to hard to excuse the refs because it's a bad look to whine about it.
