USC, UCLA to join the Big Ten in 2024

Phil Knight and Nike money make Oregon a national program. No way they’re being left out of a top slot in a reformed super-conference.

UW and Oregon is a compelling pair; they’re already rivals, and traditionally battle for Northwest football supremacy. Big losers there are WSU and The Other OSU.

Theres lots ot losers today. Hopefully this means Illinois is going to come out ahead. I worry at some point the super teams of College Football are going to want to leave the rest of their conferences behind.

I think the prospect of this is minimal, largely because IF the super teams start dumping their conferences, then how would they inflate their W-L records by stomping on us underlings... and IF they can't keep their W-L records high, then they themselves would get dumped from their super conferences...

Honestly, if we're talking football, that's generous. Probably more like Blackburn Rovers or even Millwall.
We are not mean or dirty enough to ever be a Millwall.

We’re more like an Aston Villa or Crystal Palace. Great 100 years ago, and convinced we’re still on that tier today despite recent evidence to the contrary.

Eh, in the last 30 years Villa has been in the Prem all but one 3 season stretch. Don't think you'd be able to say the same of Illinois football in a world with relegation.

Yeah how did Illinois fall from about 5th in the 1980s to 47th?
For undergrads? By emphasizing professors who bring in research money over those who gave a damn about teaching would be my guess. I saw them 'force out' a great, tenured, teacher because they were not bringing in enough money. The Prof even offered to do a double teaching load so that a strong researcher, who disliked and was bad at teaching, could just do research and bring in more money. Win/win, right? UIUC said no.

From talking with Profs in some engineering departments, there was a shift in the 90s from "our department" and "we need to do X", to individualism. People were hired for their individual skills without thoughts about how they fit into the department culture. It became "me and my work", and "the job duties I'm forced to do to enable me to do my work."

I'll credit UIUC for putting material in front of me, and holding tests to force a schedule. While there were a few few good teachers in engineering, they were definitely the minority. Most seemed to just want to do the minimum to get out of the classroom and back to their research.

[Is it just me, or did Dan remove this thread from the index?]

I guess this is something even Kevin Warren couldn’t screw up. Maybe he is better than he gets credit for.

This is a massive move, I mean it dwarfs Rutgers, Maryland and Nebby, but Penn State was huge for Delaney.

Let’s hope he doesn’t stop here.

The official numbers are never published, but the general understanding is that the NBC money is well below market value of what Big 10 teams receive. I’ve read estimates at $15-$18M for NBC money
There is no way Notre Dame makes anywhere close to what the new B1G payout will be. They would be incredibly dumb to stay with the ACC, and there is no way they join the SEC. I think it’s a matter of time for them to join the B1G.

Part of it is that they started factoring in graduation rates. Give everyone a degree, USNews rates you as a better school.

so pretty much does the B1G get the top 6 prestigious schools along the coast

and the other 6 end up merging with the B12 ? (name tbd) . and make no mistake - this new B12/Pac12 hybrid conference is pretty good on paper

Cal would be a questionable add IMO as their Athletic Dept is a hot mess financially and their teams are not that good. If adding more from the Pac12 I'd vote for UDub/Oregon/Stanford/1 of the AZ schools.

US News also factors in selectivity, which disadvantages state schools along with graduation rates. State schools have a mission to serve their state and generally take a lot more borderline applicants than, say, Northwestern. So state schools are generally less selective and also have lower graduation rates than their private brethren.

yea
these deals arent made in a vacuum in the hopes some suitor comes along . the B1G knows full well what this deal means revenue wise . they also know what it means if 2-4 more Pac schools we’ve been talking about come in .

this is all about EVERY school making more money after the expansion , not less .

I'm guessing the B1G would take Oregon, Washington, iffy on Colorado and then walk away?

I'm not saying UCLA and USC gets you a monopoly in the Bay area, but their alums are enough to get you on cable there. That's significant. You can absolutely consolidate by going Berkley, Stanford or both. I'm just saying it may make more sense to add a large market in which you don't have any presence at all, such as Phoenix, Denver, Arlanta, Houston, Miami.

40k doesn't seem like enough to support a channel, especially given that only a small percentage will subscribe.

Further, it assumes people have cable. The heavy tech bias in the Bay area, coupled with really !!!!!! Comcast service, and high cable prices (dropping under pressure from streaming services), results in people doing more on their computers. Why pay an Comcast when you can stream better content, cheaper, by subscribing to specific sites online? It is cheaper to subscribe to all of Netflix, AmazonPrime, CBS+, HBO, and Disney than get the standard tier Comcast subscription. If you want to go with a provider, GoogleTV is cheaper/better.

Living in the Denver area I would LOVE the chance to watch my Illini play within an hour drive of me... Please please please let it happen.

I'm pretty sure the B1G will take ND anytime ND wants to join.
Any traction about UW joining other than speculation here? Selfish motivation, same as other Loyalty posters in their local regions, but they'd be a nice fit for both academics and athletics
