I think if you used IU as your example, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

The Michigan example just doesn't hold water. For one, most Illinois fans don't consider them to even be one of our top 4 rivals. And 2 of their Final Fours have been vacated. So they have 3.
The reason why I used Michigan/Hunter is because our fans said there was a rivalry. Hunter said he didn’t recognize the rivalry and never thought much of Illinois. Our fans got all bent out of shape. (Including me) Obviously, Illinois has seen a resurgence during Hunters tenure and he knows we are a good team. Especially since he is winless against us. However, he did not think highly of Illinois as a kid growing up or as a recruit. Who could blame him? We only made the tournament a few times during the formative years of his life. He looked down his nose at Illinois in much the same way we are doing that to Iowa. Iowa is our rival. We border them, play them each year, and the win/loss record is respectable. Not to mention the handshake line with Chin, Mccaffrey/Williams skirmish, and what Coach Satan did to us.

Well , the common thought aboot this game is whether we hit an average or above average % on our 3 point shots.......No doubt it will be hella important , but our D is gonna be the deciding factor in Saturdays game .....We have a height advantage at a couple of positions and will try to maximize that advantage.........

If there is a change in our starting 5 I would also expect it to be Rodgers in for Dain.......But I didn't know there was talk aboot it happening..............The return of Patrick M. adds another factor into our scouting report , but I just really think we will win tomorrow...

Here's to a boost in our 3's and we get an 8-10 point lead and never look back...........I like being in second place in the B$G after our 0-3 start.................So , let s go...........................

Fair enough.

I know Iowa is a legitimate rival. I was throwing shade at them for that reason.

But please, for the love of all that is orange and blue, from one anonymous message board poster to another, please don't compare me to Hunter Dickinson. That was a low blow. 😆

Truce.

Now I’m going to take a shower. I feel so dirty after defending Michigan basketball. 🤮

And I agree. I wouldn’t trade our entire
history for theirs.

This was the only reasonable response at this point. Also, someone helped them with their social media graphics skills, it seems.
Agreed. It was a bit too late, but necessary. Time to move forward.

On another note and to avoid multiple posts, I must be the only one that thinks Iowa fans dressing in orange is a classic troll. I take it as an acknowledgment of the significance of the Orange Krush rather than an insult. Plus taking it as a compliment will likely piss them off even more.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Illinois men's basketball team will get a boost for the remainder of its season.
Luke Goode, a wing who has been sidelined since a foot injury in the team’s preseason closed-door scrimmage against Kansas in October, has been cleared and returned to practice. He’ll be available and in uniform when Illinois plays at Iowa at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
"He practiced (Thursday) as expected, he looked good," Illinois coach Brad Underwood said.

Forgive me if this made it here already; I only skimmed the pages I missed.

A colleague of mine is an Iowa grad and we have a friendly rivalry. He shared that a friend of his in Iowa City is claiming that Iowa fans are planning an orange out to make fun of Krush not getting in.

Seems silly to me, but there's a reason we call them Idiots Out Walking Around
I just want to say that I personally--the guy who lost Kofi's beloved blue binder--would be so owned if all Iowa fans showed up tomorrow wearing orange.

"The game is sold out..Fans are encouraged to wear black or gold clothing for Saturday’s annual “Black & Gold Spirit Game.”."

Hope they sent a direct email to the boys and girls club of Cedar Rapids. Or should I say the fans they actually resold them to.

Eh, I have no doubt they gave the actual tickets to Boys and Girls Club. That's too easily verifiable and the actual dollar value wouldn't be a huge loss to them anyway. The PR win is worth a lot more than the ticket revenue.

fwiw, I imagine Iowa "gave" the tickets to the club, along with an offer to resell the tix for them, giving the club the proceeds, less a handling/ processing fee.

I also have the So IL > Champaign > Chicago progression. I agree somewhat but the caveat is I found surprising commonality with the people in school at Illinois that grew up in Chicago proper.

I grew up on the near north side and my take is similar to yours. I found myself to actually have a lot in common with the kids I met at U of I who grew up in southern Illinois. A lot of the same dreams and desires and despite growing up in much different places and different upbringings having a lot of the same thoughts on life. When I graduated from Champaign though my first job was in central Illinois in Peoria. And that place is one that I do agree with the previous poster that I felt little to no commonality with the people there and almost directionally opposed to. I really didn't like the people there, and I especially didn't like how they treated anyone who wasn't exactly like them. It was an eye-opening experience to me to be honest, a lot moreso than college, and after putting in my time there, I couldn't have been happier to leave.

I miss that ole gal.

Also, the more I thought about it, the more I hope Iowa emerges as our clear rival in all sports (and vice versa for them) in the next decade plus. It just makes so much sense.

Illinois Side
- Yes, people hate Michigan or whatever ... but come on. Especially in football, they just have other rivalries that take up their attention.
- Northwestern will just always be a weird one ... it's like Tennessee/Vanderbilt or Georgia/Georgia Tech - I'm fine calling it a "rivalry," but we are just fundamentally different sports teams and fan bases. It'll never truly heat up.
- Indiana is a great rivalry, but they will ALWAYS prioritize Purdue and that's understandable. The thought of proudly declaring they're our "biggest rival" while they poo-poo the rivalry in general makes me want to puke ... F 'em.
- Missouri will always remain a huge rivalry, but non-conference is just a different dynamic. There is and always will be room for both.

Iowa Side
- On that same Mizzou note, there is plenty of room for them to keep playing Iowa State. Also, a lot of Iowa fans take pride in that being Iowa State's "super bowl," so you won't find a single Hawkeye fan proudly saying ISU is a bigger rivalry to them than Illinois; it's part of the dynamic for them to pretend that Iowa State is fundamentally beneath them.
- Wisconsin is a great rivalry of theirs, but (1) it is has cooled somewhat since the Bielema days (hello!!) and (2) Wisconsin will always, always, always have Minnesota as its biggest rival, and it will be 100% reciprocated on the Minny side.
- Regarding Minnesota ... see above.

Illinois/Iowa is the winner!
I agree that Illinois-Iowa is probably our most likely 2-way rival in both sports. There is the general nastiness and dislike, and the playing of high stakes games necessary for a 2-way rival on the basketball side. The problem really is the football side. Iowa has dominated us for so long in football- we've only beaten them twice in the past 22 years, almost all of them being blowouts. That said, our past two games with them have been a lot more in line of what should be expected of a rival. If we can continue rising and these games are close and have some chippiness to them in the coming years, I think this could indeed have the makings of our biggest rival. That said, I'll have a tough time hating anyone more than Indiana in basketball and Michigan in football.
