What’s Daddy Brad saying to PG to make him smile like that?

“I’d never yell at you, Phoenix.”
“Number 13 is only lucky in orange.”
“How much would you love to rub an Illini natty in the face of your pops?”

Any other guesses❓
Can ya play PG PG??

Ty going on a broadcast & stating he's the starting PG and the team and everyone has his back.. then a week later they are going after a tiny guard from the Southland?? I don't like the feel of that.... Indy/Lville/0440 care to change my mind?
Brad is NOT bringing in another PG.

Pretty interesting write up from Bossi:

JASON JAKSTYS, PF, BREAKAWAY BASKETBALL

Jason Jakstys (Photo: Courtesy of UANextboyshoops, 247Sports)
247Sports ranking: 3-star in the class of 2024.
Recruitment: Offers from Boston, Illinois, Illinois State, Indiana State, Penn, and Valparaiso among others.
What he did: Playing for Breakaway Basketball at Under Armour, Jason Jakstys looked like a legitimate high major big man prospect. At 6-foot-9, he’s still a little on the lean side. But he’s got big shoulders to grow into, he can run and he’s a pretty competitive dude with a well-rounded overall skill set.
Jakstys can step out to hit three-point shots, he does a nice job of rotating on defense to block or alter shots, he sprints from rim-to-rim, is a lob threat and shows a lot of signs of being able to score at the next level. Now, he may benefit from a redshirt year if he chooses to go the high major route. The offer from the Illini was a big one and we’ll be interested to see if other Big Ten type programs step up with an offer. He certainly looks to be good enough for them.

6' 9" barefoot maybe. Just like Morez is 6' 7". I think Jakstys is every bit as long as Hawkins (no jokes please). And he's looking less like skeletor than a kid who could be straight out of The Grinch's central casting (e.g. Happ). I don't think this one is nearly as cut and dried as Indy thinks.

Got a text yesterday from my sister about this offer. Olney is my hometown and his mother is a relatively close family member; his father (not present since before birth) is a former UK player (I don't know who). My sister is still close with his mother and says he's waiting on offers from the likes of UK or Duke. I don't know how good he is, but his mother has more-or-less put all of her & his eggs in this basket. I hope it pays off for him -- my sister says that he's intelligent and makes good grades, which he probably got from his mother. On the off-chance that he does come to the Beloved, I will be interested to hear from insiders if his mother makes waves similar to the brief stories we've read about other parents whose kids were former Illini.

I thought Indy thought this was a non commitable offer and was just for relationship building and this kid could never play in BT.
The kid looks pretty good to me.

Any insiders able to offer any insight on Jace Richardson?

Reading that article it talks about Jason Richardson's kid Jace being a top 50 recruit in 2024.

I'm assuming he's going to MSU but any reason we never offered? Since we have his cousin on our team you think we would have kicked the tires at least.

Is there bad blood in the Richardson family where the Ty Rodgers part doesn't get along with Jason Richardsons side? That could explain why Ty spurned MSU and had Illinois and Michigan as his final two.

There was an insider disagreement on Jakstys. When I look at his clips, I see potential, but I also see why our non-committable offer is his only P6 offer. Tall but scrawny, he tends to go over guys a lot. I think he will get tossed into the 3rd row trying to do that in the Big Ten. Definitely needs to beef up, but he's got some skill for a guy that height.

The strange thing is, we're going to need a lot of bodies for 2024, but with Morez, Hansberry, and Dainja presumably on the roster, big men aren't a drastic need, especially if you assume we'll add a transfer big even if we get Jakstys. The other factor is Jakstys is clearly a developmental big. Does Underwood have any interest in developing players or does he want to take impact high school kids and do everything else through the portal?

Jeremy Werner's conversation with Joe Hendricksen included the following interesting nugget: it may be in a program's interest to have a guy(s) on the roster who doesn't command NIL bucks, for economic reasons.

With today's transfer rules, a player considered "developmental" could be more inclined to sign with a mid- or low- major out of high school. Does he want to sign with the biggest program on his offer list and play few minutes in year one; or, go to a mid-major for the opportunity to play in year one, and play well enough to transfer up without penalty?

My reading of the tea leaves is on the same page . . . with the current setup, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the flow of HS players slow to a trickle to the P5 programs with a diversion of the vast majority of them going to mid-majors, Div. II/Div.3 and even NAIA schools for 1-3 years to develop enough to earn NIL at a major school. The NCAA version of the minor leagues, if you will. I think we're already seeing the beginnings of this . . .

Is it confirmed that this is a non commitable offer?

that type of info is highly unlikely to be public. that said, I think it's highly likely that it's a non-commitable offer. I see the offer as saying that we're seriously interested, but we're not ready yet. which is pretty common. exactly the right move at this stage.

For those who are interested; Spain vs Israel u20 Euro championship live right now. Excellent game so far.
Don't think staff showed any interest, and I seem to remember that it was determined by this board that he wasn't Big Ten material, but 6'11" Danny Wolf of Glencoe and Yale just had 21pt 13 rb for Isr. in a huge upset over Spain.

Thats if they don't wind up at the draft before the P5s get a chance.

Yeah... It makes perfect sense. Guys want to play. Unless a player is an uber-fan of a particular school that also has interest in developing them, I don't think we will see many that accept a redshirt or a year where they don't anticipate seeing the floor much.
For high major teams with aspirations of hanging banners, you need depth to make it through a long season. If a guy isn't ready to help you now, you may plant the seed of a relationship hoping to have it bear fruit in a couple years when the player has some experience under his belt in a less competitive conference.

It makes a lot of sense for both sides for a "developmental player" to go where he can play now and jump up in competition when he is more ready to contribute.

What will be interesting to see is if any patterns in relationships between specific schools develop. Will head coaches funnel "developmental players" toward mid-majors with coaches they have a relationship with and share similar values/strategies?
